That's the really fun part -- looking back and seeing which speculations/theories were closest to the truth, and laughing about how wrong we all were. I still get a chuckle out of browsing the old DAO forums and seeing the different character speculations.

I joined when I saw the anouncement for DA 2.
When I first saw the trailer for DA:O it would be released in a week, and most info was on their site.
But now...I'm happy with the BioWare forums, a place to speculate away and not go mad waiting for DA 2.

Okay, my flame shield is up and ready so...



I don't like the look of this guy. He looks like somebody Zevran but with an extra 100% annoying and smug. He has this expression of "I think I'm way cooler than you" written all over his face. Plus I can imagine Hawke doing something important and this guy screwing it up, shrugging, and walking off while a horde of qunari attack Hawke.



Now to be fair I laughed at my fair share of Zevran's commentary like when passing through that cult village to get the Urn. But I don't want a clone of him, no way.

And I'm going to be stubborn and call him Gunther because I'm pulling on the anti-squee trains horn.

So. I'm under the current opinion I don't know what he is, but I like the Arlathan idea, if a little squicked out that at the prospect of a centuries-old LI. I can't imagine why they'd draw glowy tattoos on the concept art unless he's mystical in nature, and I can't fathom why he'd be mystical if he wasn't a mage.

Well, maybe he was experimented on by a mage?
And now he has a spirit or demon that the mage forced into him? And the glowy tatoos are made so the spirit or demon doesnt leave his body? I dunno but he would be pretty mystical and unique if he was the only non-mage character that could call upon the power of spirits or demons.

my take on it:

last survivor of arlathan's demise, he is taken by the tevinter imperium so that they can use him as their perfect killer.

ageless slave assassin who "kills" his emotions to cope with his unending hell 


glowing tattoos placed by the tevinter imperium as a "leash" of sorts

Speculationi so far, in case you gett dizzy over 100 pages of rambling:

About MEG:

1. He might be the being from beyond the Eluvian mirror (which is very likely to be feature in DA II)
2. He might be one of the Arlathan survivor.
3. He might be some abomination, hence the glowing tattoo.
4. He might be a body snatcher.
5. He might be a possible Fade Spirit. Evil or not? Unsure.
6. He might be Shale's another form.
7. He might be a slave of Trevinter Magister.
      7.1 A possible continue research product after Amgarrak (my theory).
8. He could be a warrior (very likely, since there are way too many mage on that list already)
9. He might owned a unicorn, or a nug as animal companion.
10. He might be voice (as per various people suggested) by David Tennant, Michael Fassbender, Christopher Waltz, Greg Ellis, or Karl Urban.
11. He might order White Russian (reflect his look), Bailey, or Jack Daniel (reflect his possible personality) in the bar.
11. He might be a LI that 'push you up against the wall' (am I using the right word here?).

Regarding marks on his face (no, not the glowy one):

1. The blue one on his chin are tattoo.
2. The one on his jawline are stubbles.
3. The one on his jawline are scars
4. The one on his jawline are tattoo, too.
5. The one under his nose is nosering.

My favorite speculation bit is either the former Tervinter slave or something is bound to Meg. As someone else pointed out earlier, he'd already be an acceptable companion without the silver hair and glowing veins/circles, so I hope for a semblance of an explanation in game.



I can see him being a bit antagonistic for a companion, and whatever the reasoning is for his tattoos being a source of conflict/contention/ &/or relevant to the plot (I didn't quite want to say drama). As for how that'll play out, I obviously can only guess.



I can however say that I personally want him to be an intense sort with a sardonic sense of humor who is no nonsense and pragmatic. Oh and most importantly, great at killing.



This thread is going to make me think of him as Meg even after his name is revealed. Neat-o.

Dane and Hafter where both human heroes, and most nobles claim to be descendants from Hafter. So I doubt that an Elf will call his son after a human hero, probably because humans will frown upon that.

But... but he's clearly a 'Meg'!

My completely serious speculation is that he's a gorgeous Arlathan survivor who was enslaved and used by Tevinter magisters, maybe as an assassin (The glowy tattoos were used to control him or something).... and that's where it gets full of holes. I think he somehow escaped Tevinter where he encountered Flemeth who is going to make use of his Arlathan-y status somehow, with or against Hawke... that part hasn't yet sorted itself out in my head.

Don't worry. Even if he turns out to be smug and snarky, people can't be smug or snarky for long if they step on a rusty nail or broken glass shards. He has no shoes.
