I'm actually very surprised David Gaider confirmed that he isn't a Dalish nor a Mage. The Dalish thing in particular. It just doesn't seem like them to confirm such things without a lot of teasing/vagueness. Just not in a particularly clear way. Still, going by Origins I'm sure they could make a City Elf have an interesting background, without having to resort to goat hybrids and bakery products.

I personally think he is some hybrid class. Like ME2, Samara was a adept with the soldier only assault rifle and Thane was an infiltrator with biotics instead of tech powers. The player cannot do anything like that but the teammates can. I think Gunther/Meg is a rogue/mage-ish class but is not completely classified as a mage so Gaider would be telling the truth by saying he is not a mage even though he still has some magic abilities.
