Someone had mentioned the art team was going to make many subtle, but notable differences in how the races appear. The ears are very different from this guy to the elves.

1. He also has much wider shoulders and a sturdier looking bone structure
2. He has facial hair. May or may not disqualify him as an elf.
3. He has a highly unusual concept for not being a mage. Whoever had mentioned his in-game model is very different may be correct, but I doubt that the uniqueness of his design will be ripped away.
4. His outfit doesn't exactly fit in anywhere that we've seen, at best perhaps Antiva


Why completely throw it aside? Pointy ears =/= elf.

An elf who follows the Qun, and is thus considered "Qunari" by Qunari society. Nobody is suggesting he's an elven/qunari hybrid. Which I'm pretty sure is impossible given the setting.

Oy, not a qunari, but a Fex. Almost nothing is known about them other than they are likely smaller than the Qunari, and many have been converted to following the Qun, which would explain the similarities in the appearances between Meg and the qunari.

I'd bet money on it, yeah. His design just screams "elf", and it's not just the ears. And I don't think that's facial hair. Scars or markings with odd placement maybe, but if it's supposed to be facial hair it's really awkwardly drawn.

Pretty sure he's not a Fex. An entirely new race would probably get a bigger market reveal, and I doubt BioWare would make them so similar looking to the new elvish concept art, which gives them ears like Meg has.

It's entirely possible that he's an elvish follower of the Qun. In fact, that's quite high on my list of speculation as to what he could be.

Well, Qunari means "follower of the Qun." So, there could be. Anyone who follows that code is by definition a Qunari.

You're right but Sten is also a species apart, one that seems to be identified with the Qun, and he is quite scathing of other creatures in a way that (maybe) implies that elves and the like could not be true qunari.  

...I'm definitely biased though, I never can warm to sten.

Fex is a possibility, but I'd prefer them to be a little more unique looking than just resembling half-elves from other IPs.

And Gaider also said that he doesn't look like his concept anymore, that's true; Still, the smallest variation in ear size doesn't scream new race to me. Dude still looks like an elven archer.

I suppose we'll see in the final design, but right now labeling him as such makes me uncomfortable. None of the elves in DA1 looked anything like him, especially in facial structure, and I see far less similarities than differences... other than pointed ears, he looks more human than elf imo.

You're forgetting that Zevran also looked like a human with pointy ears in his concept art, too. In fact, Meg looks on the lithe side compared to Zev's concept.
