I'm hoping the character reveal shows MEG to be much different.

That concept art is way too anime for my taste.

The white hair is a bit puzzling. Both Cassandra and this fellow have it. It's common in anime of course and doesn't signify age at all; it's part of Japanese art style. I wonder if they'll try to pass it off as such, or if they'll have an explanation for it, as western art usually does.

It's not just the white hair.  It's the way he's standing, the body proportions, etc.

Now, I admit I'm no expert on anime, so I may be wrong, but the picture that's in that magazine just screams anime at me.

Well, that's how DA II's concept art work this time, I'm afraid.
I won't complain as they all look damn awesome than my childish doodle.

It doesn't scream anime. This does:

There is greater stylization and an emphasis on abstraction in the image above. Meg appears to be influenced by anime, like other visual elements in DA2.

See, that just disturbs me.

The MEG picture disturbs me less . . but still bothers me.

I like the white hair on Meg. I think it suits him. Whereas Cassandra I think looks better with black hair.

And cut out the fangirl bashing. You obviously knew what you were likely to find in this thread by the title alone.

That's your personal taste speaking and there's nothing wrong with that. As an artist, I try to divorce my personal preferences from regional art styles. I've discovered there are underlying aesthetics that appeal to me, whether it be in a baroque painting by Rubens, a drawing by Jim Lee, or Japanese wood cuts.

The character art in DA2 is not that great, not when compared to the environments I've seen BioWare put out, or other character design in games like TW2 or Deus Ex.

That's why I look forward to seeing the line up of npc's as they appear in the game. They certainly did a good job of it in ME2.

Maybe his concept art was influenced in part by anime, but I don't think that's a bad thing. There's some very good and beautiful anime out there, and there's some very, very, er... weird anime out there too.

If there are anime influences in his concept, I'd say it was from the 'good' kind.

Considering the wide array of art styles used in anime, saying something "seems anime" is pretty meaningless. Do you mean Berserk, Lupin the Third, Gankutsuou, One Piece, Pita-Ten, Star Blazers? Because I don't really see Meg fitting into any of those.

I always thought that BERSERK was closer to western drawing style.

Anime influence is okay, as long as it doesn't look like we're playing a cartoon.

Oh, it's absolutely my personal taste, and I'm not at all trying to say different.  Anime - for reasons that escape me, personally - seems to have a large following, so clearly people like it.

I don't, though.  And as I haven't seen elements that I consider 'anime-inspired' in other characters, I'm bothered by this one.

But as I said, I do hope that this is simply concept art, and that it will change.

PS - I don't mind that he has white hair.  I mind the overall style of the character.

I'm not sure what's creepy or disturbing about the above.

Then again, I'm used to Western cartoons that have stuff like this:

Good point. I still think Bioware is borrowing from Japanese gaming and art style, but 'anime' is a broad term to say the least. I don't mean to categorize here.

I have no idea what any of those are.  Nor do I care.

Basically, I don't know much about anime - I do know that every piece of 'art' - by which I mean, pictures - which have been described to me as 'anime' are things I don't like, for various reasons.

So, Meg may not fit into your definition of a particular anime style.  And you may not care if it did.  But for me, I'll retreat to a paraphrase of the US Supreme Court's comment on pornography - I may not be able to tell you what anime is, but I know it when I see it.

And when I see it, I invariably don't like it.

I see it in Meg - or influences of it, at least.  And I don't care for it.  And that's nothing other than my personal opinion of that particular picture of Meg.
