Oh yeah. Fits, subverts, averts, deconstructs, and so on. If anything Bioware proves that a trope is not a bad thing. They are masters of toying with our expectations >_>

This. And the amount of tropes that actually exist make it impossible to avoid them.

Not that I would recommend avoiding them. Some of them are damn sexy.

*cough* Yes... I agree with your last point, there.

Though it has to be mildly annoying to know that no matter what, your creation will be broken down and categorized by is component parts, when its the whole package that makes the character unique, then be accused of not being original based on one part...

After I just finished looking at Nightmare Fuel, that is a welcome change.

I agree. And it's not even the components itself, so much as how the entire product is executed. DA:O very easily could have turned out tragically terrible, if it wasn't written, produced, and then revealed as well as it was.
I struggle all the time with tropes and writing. All the time. After seven hours of straight writing, I turn into a paranoid wreck.

I'm sure the caffeine doesn't help.

It works similarly in art with appearance tropes. You don't need to avoid tropes, you just need to use them to guide the viewer to the right conclusions. Or the wrong ones, for awesome twists and surprises later.

On a related note I dispute Meg being put in the White Haired Pretty Boy category, firstly because I get the impression that his hair was not always that way (might be related to the white veins, but that's my wild mass guessing talking) and because BW is made of people who know how to and/or do manipulate people's first impressions. (Leliana in a Chantry robe? Must be chaste and mild! Not.)

I don't doubt it. But it seems harder to get people to draw the right conclusions from drawings than writings; I couldn't do it, at least. So artist that can, I have a crap load of respect for (your art is amazing, by the way).

Meg doesn't seem attractive in the traditional sense, either. For me, at least, it's more of the way he seems to carry himself rather then his appearance that I find compelling. But he's glowing, too. I like glowing things. And there's feathers. I'm pretty sure the developers thrive off of our running-around-headless speculations, too.

So.. who do you think should be the voice-actor for MEG?

Elias Toufexis.

He sounds like Zevran.

I'm going to go with 'All white dudes with dark hair and beards look like Hawke.'

Umm... Okay.... Maybe what I should have said is that he sounds like he has an Antivan accent. Which I guess is based on Italian accents? Anyway, if Meg did have an Antivan accent, it lends credibility to the theory that he might be one of the Crows.

Why thank you Ser :)

Oh man am I a huge fan of the gender unbiased embellishment going on. Feathers and what seem on first glance to be glowing swirly tats?! Dainty little feet?! So girly! NAY, stick them on this man! Suddenly, five times more manly for being covered in feathers. Great success! (also Pseudo Approves +100) Not that "feathers are too girly ew" would stop anybody with a commitment to storytelling but, still, it's nice ;_;

They could be just case of Rob Liefeld feet. Wouldn't read that much into them.

No problem.~

I know exactly what you're talking about. I like that he isn't the traditional attractive. After all, there's only so many rugged warriors one can take before they contemplate shooting them all. Dude's rockin' some considered-girly traits quite well, but on the whole there's nothing girly about him. Except Derpy. But Derpy's the exception, not the rule.

Oh dear, I could put my rantypants on about how all the heroes and love-interests have to fit into a certain 'type'. I'm always careful about that in my own writing but, God damn, if I have to read one more line about washboard abs and kickass Harleys...

Point is, Meg seems refreshing and delightful.

It wasn't so much of his hair that reminded me of that trope (though that certainly played a role) as the points it made about personality.  Meg seems to have this feel of not just being an aloof individual, but also a possessor of recondite knowledge on matters that are not angelic in the least bit..  Mind you, I'm deriving all this just from darker shade bronze surrounding the slant of his eyes (what color are they anyways?) that give him sense of cryptic intensity.

I totally agree that there is a chance that his hair may not have always been that way.

I could rant too, but there are limits to what people like, and that's a limit you have to at least sort-of-maybe-vaguely respect or at least not leap miles above and beyond when the ability to keep doing the job hinges on sales.

It's a tough balance. You have to do awesome unique things but not scare or confuse them (edit: the audience), unless you're making bad guys.

*gag* Liefeld...
Well, he is an elf. Tapered limbs and all that. And the artist is fully capable of drawing macho feet so to do otherwise seems intentional.

Well, maybe they aren't really glowing but just drawn with bright paint/whatever, it was possible to give DAO character tattoos like that too.

Hair is white so he doesn't look entirely like Zevran, but still stays a blonde sort-of?

I wonder how many people would scream if Bioware took away the glowing tats and white hair.

*zooms in*
Gray, but then again there's about five pixels of iris to sample. If anything is likely to change it's eye color so it probably doesn't matter.

Fffff. I love that bronzey stuff. Whatever it is it's becoming my favorite part of his look. I am trying hard not to get attached to it.

I do hope that Meg isn't an expy of Zeveran, but seeing as he's not a mage, and doesn't seem to be wearing shoulderpads of doom, he's almost certainly a rogue, which makes him all the more likely to be a Zeveran wanabie.

Or he's not a party member and/or doesn't have a combat role? He could have a class all to his own, because he's glowy and special. Maybe he's an important side NPC.

I can't imagine it hasn't been assumed in the already 77 pages of this thread (by the way, wow !), but perhaps it simply is Zevran revisited. I doubt he's gonna stay in Denerim/Antiva for ten years. Then again, some wardens did kill him.

Are you familiar with enchantment?
