How can you tell it is crow feathers and not say ... raven feathers.

well, it's not outside the realm of possibility that Zevran has a cameo.  But that would be awful!  Well, not Zevran having a cameo, but that the elves changed THAT much!

Edit: what would be worse is that this ISN'T a love interest!

Why would they write another Crow assassin companion?  I recall Gaider saying he didn't want to repeat the same kind of stuff they'd done in Origins lest the writers get bored.  Bored writers= bad.

I imagine it's just the look.  Hawke's armor has animal skins on it, etc.  Part of the gritty sexy thing.

Edit:  It doesn't even really look like feathers to me?  Rather scales/ metal/ part of the armor.

And getting waaay cooler. And that might be unconfortable, because people will start moaning again about the fact that they can't play anything else other then humans. Heck, I play humans and I'm moaning about it right now, looking at him!

It's an interesting outfit...except for...the feet. I mean damn, did he forget his shoes? I know feet can be toughened over time with calluses but even the toughest callus doesn't do much against the occaisional pointy rock, broken glass, thorn, or nail you might encounter in a busy city like Kirkwall.
