Hi guys! Really desperate!

About to go to a LAN, my first proper one and BG1 and BG2 won't play without stuttering/lagging.

I have disabled 3D in a variety of config combinations as well as my onboard graphics card. I have removed ambient sound, not removed it, windowed the game, tried running as an administrator and in different compatibilities... I'm stumped!

I recently got a windows 7 64 bit laptop - intel i3, intel hd graphics. I have enough ram and everything looks beautiful but game play is stuttered, even in the MENU. This means something maybe? It's not playable like this. I'm going to keep 3D aceleration on as it's not the problem. What is the problem, I'm not sure. I've tried changing processor affinity, making the game trusted with the anitivurs... I'm so stumped!

I'd rather not install any mods. It's a clean install, on full from the 4 in 1 version. It is patched and installed in the x86 folder.

Any ideas?

:(

Will loveyou guys so much if you know what I could do!

I also tried using Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.6 and ForcDisabling something or other that a fix suggested - no luck still.

Does it improve if you disable the laptop wireless capability?

The game also behaves better in Vista if installed to a less protected location, don't know if the same is true of W7.

Unfortunately not :( Thank you for the suggestion though! I didn't realise my wireless was on, I'm using the ethernet.

I can try a reinstall in a bit... considering installing another game to see if it's something that just happens for games and me but not sure where that would get me if so... really struggling to work out why it's being as it is regardless of setting changes... it's something seemingly constant - maybe my graphics, or the install (but seems perfect) or the processors but doesn't seem to be that either :(

Have also tried changing power settings to full power for both graphics and laptop... no dice :(

I don't know if it's worth noting but I get this problem in BG1 and BG2.

MIGHT BE SPEAKING TOO SOON BUT THINK I'VE FIXED IT!

Previously I tried running the game on CPU1 (through set affinity... I have a CPU0,1,2 and 3).

I also tried running all 4.

It occurred to me to try another CPU just on its own. I thought I'd tried CPU0 before or something but no luck however, CPU3 has worked so I'm not sure if I did try the other. SO HAPPY :D

Will reply once more to confirm. Have to finish an essay before I can play :(

Have reduced the lagging effect greatly, stll occurs about once a minue... but game now crashes on autosaves arghhh. I'm sure there was a fix to this but irritation!

Whilst it's running better it seems to still have the same problem. When I hear my laptop whirring louder (either fan or hdd or cd spinning?) the game seems to lag - as in my chracters will still move wherever headed but appear to jump... Not sure what to do if it's coinciding with hdd being accessed or whatever :/ Think I might have to give up - the lagging will drive me nuts.

Did you try installing to a different directory?

I didn't, only because I tried another game and it worked fine in the x86 one... if I reinstalled it do you recommend My documents? or the "normal" program files folder?

Guild wars works fine with no problem at all. Haven't got any other games on me to check :(

It is very advisable to install Baldur's Gate in a folder outside Program Files or other 'monitored' folders when running an OS later than XP. You should install it in a hand-made folder like C:Games\\\\Baldur's Gate or any other name you fancy. If you install in a folder like Program Files or My Documents, Windows starts putting files like save-games in other locations (Users\\\\*something*) causing all sorts of problems.

Lesson 1 on running BG on Vista or later: NEVER install into Program Files folder. My advice is: re-install in another folder (shouldn't take too long, as your game is not modded you say). Can't guarantee that it helps, but it's worth a try and might prevent encountering other problems later on.

Baldur's Gate is an old program written in a time when computers had only 1 core, and will only access 1 core I've read. If setting affinity with a particular core helps, apply that again after installing in a new folder. I hope you have luck getting it to run properly.

P.S.: I'm not familiar with Windows 7 x64, but on my XP x64 (runnning on a dual core AMD 64-bit) BG has no problems running outside of the x86 folder, so I assume on 7 the x86-folder isn't necessary either to run the game.

I will try and reinstall it - although my game ran fine on Vista 32bit. The save files just hide under "compatibility files".

Will definately give it a go - although my last computer was dual core and it had no problems there either. But will give it a go and let you guys know. :)

Sorry to hear that. I don't really know a solution. There have been other people having problems with stutter on modern computers with more than 2 cores - the more modern the computer, the more the lag, it seems. Some people keep an old computer around especially for playing Baldur's Gate - do you still have access to your old dual-core?

I do when I'm at home :( Going home soon! But not the same hehe! I love BG soooooo much! Would have been great to have it at my beck and call. I mean it's playableish... but the lag drives me nuts XD

Will keep working on it, probably over Christmas. Miss this game so much!

I'm so lame though, I'm such a vanilla BG-er. I installed all the mods once before but I don't know... something about it as it is, I just love it.

Just watched the Irenicus Dreams and miss it so!

I'm thinking it might be to do with something that's running the whole time/something unique to both games (aside from them both being BG lol)... seeing as all the settings I can use can't help (the only difference is I have no power over EAX which I've always had in the past) then I assume it might be the processors or perhaps the graphics settings... although I tried messing with them too.

Thanks for the ideas though! Will not give up XD

Try adding BG2 game path to windows defender. Worth a shot.

I used to get incredible lag...turned out windows defender was scanning the files while i was playing...slowing it down =O.

I've been having the exact same problem as Kahiara. The only thing I've found that fixes it is switching the BLT Graphics settings in-game to On/Off depending on which it is at the time. I'll run into a fire pit and it'll slow down, but when I go into the menu and change those settings it fixes it. Then later the lag will come back, and I'll change the BLT switches again and it fixes it.

I may just have to pay the $10 and get the GoG.com versions. I haven't heard of this issue coming up with those.

I've had some success! Using a program called nHancer which you can google and download for free, I've found that the BG2 nHancer profile mentioned in the last post of this thread: http://forums.biowar...721234&forum=11 fixes the lag and graphical glitches I was experiencing! So far anyway. I have yet to play for more than a minute or so, I saved in a problem area with a moving graphic like a fire pit that was slowing things down so that I could test.

Hope this helps others! nHancer is for Nvidia Cards.

I've got the game uninstalled at the moment but I'll definately look into what you both have mentioned.

Kicking an old thread, because I found some information regarding running Neverwinter Nights on a core i3 in this post and want to point out the posibility that it is hyperthreading which causes the issue.

I was just delving into the issue of running an old game like BG, which only runs on a single core, on using i3. It's possible, I conclude from mentioned post, that hyperthreading can be an issue, even after affinity is set for a single core.

I'm looking for a new laptop myself now, but am very anxious about getting an core i3, after reading these problems, and yours from a few months ago in this post. I think I'll pick an old fashioned P6100 Pentium-dual-core.

 Hi!
first of all I apologize for necroing such an old thread.

I have been making researches about that stuttering bug lately as I've installed BG2 on my I5 laptop and I have had issues with it.

As the post before mine suggest, it has something to do with multithreading.
What I've done is this :
- Go to the msconfig console (win + r -> msconfig -> enter)
- In the startup tab click in advanced options
- tick the first box and choose 1 processor
- apply, ok,reboot

BG2 should work much better!
