Have you seen any game-play videos? The maps look smaller than the ME2 ones. Compare that to the Kocrari wilds in the first game. Walking down linear paths just got epic.

I know what you mean. I posted about this earlier, hoping by the size of the map of Thedas we would have many new areas to explore. But I guess this topic isn't that big a deal to others.

You mean the 15 minute demos they've had at cons?

Yes, they're confined. They're 15 minute demos. BioWare doesn't want people sitting at the console for three hours as they explore a town for the first time.

You actually posted a different issue. The abstraction of how wide an area you explore is not the same as the size of a game map. If that were the case then Mass Effect 2 would be the biggest BioWare game as you explore an entire galaxy.

Instead, the biggest game is BG 2, where you actually explore the smallest in-world area of any BioWare game.

And yes, if you post something at 7 am EST, you're not going to get a lot of responses on this board.

Seeing what I remember from the demos of DA before that came out, I don't see anything really to be worried about.

You got a point Maria. I got my hopes up by seeing all these cities and areas on the Thedas Map. But being as small an area as DA:O takes place in, I would imagine the same from Part 2.

Linear makes sense for a prologue area - particularly since you're supposed to be running away from the horde, not taking your time to explore the place

Yeah I guess the story will dictate where and how far you stray from Kirkwall.

I don't think we have anywhere near enough data to make such a decision.

I was just playing the Human Noble origin last night. If that's all I ever saw, I too would say the game is disturbingly confined.

Point is, we haven't seen 2% of the game areas yet, it's far too early to judge the environments.

My biggest concern is Kirkwall. I'll be a little disappointed if the city doesn't open up and reduce the need for small sections.

It would be great if BioWare managed to stream areas like in Fallout 3 or Assassin's Creed 2. Cities do well with that sort of treatment. As DA 2 has the same engine as DA:O, I imagine that the areas will only be slightly larger.

I know DA:O had small spaces spaces too. But even the smallest were very wide. Like the tunnels in Orzammar. They were tunels, but very wide.

In the DA II gameplay footage it just looks like one small path. Hope I'ts not represantative of the whole game though.

It makes sense now that they removed the Isometric camera.

We will definitely have smaller places, that was one of the first things Bioware confirmed and honestly, I am happy about that. When you first came to Denerim, it was cool, but being forced to walk from A to B and then back to A for 100 times was downright annoying and a waste of time.

Are you suggesting the Korcari Wilds did not have linear paths?

All BioWare games are linear, which is IMO a great thing

Baldur's Gate disagrees.

What about the woods right outside of Kirkwall? Maybe we go there on a quest or 2.

And unsurprisingly Baldur's Gate offered the best exploration out of all the BioWare games.

Why would they let you play through the whole dang game in a demo? Someone would just then go and spoil everything online, of course demos are confined.

BW has only brought up Kirkwall, no other places. DA2 does sound likes it's going to be restricted

I am very hopeful of lots of exploration. Several areas outside of Kirkwall that may be in play.

Wouldn't bother me if Kirkwall is a big, varied place.

like i said on another thread, if it's at least as big as Rabanastre, i'm cool with it.

I love Baldur's Gate, but I prefer linearity.
