If it's possible to replace sound files in the game, then it may be possible to selectively turn Shepard's voice off.

Do you guys *seriously* want a silent Shepard?? Or is this just another Meer bashing thread?

I'm not particularly fond of Meer's VA, but I've grown so used to hearing characters speak in games that I wouldn't want to go back to reading tons of dialogue again. Ever. I still remember vividly how excited I was to hear the Final Fantasy characters speak for the first time in FFX. Compared to the games that followed the VA wasn't even that great. But I loved it.

Yes, some voices are horrible, especially those of female characters. Yes, the VA can ruin the most touching of moments. But Meer is not THAT bad. If BW offered to get a different VA for ME3, I'd vote against it. Because this is Shepard's voice to me now. Besides, even if I could disable his voice somehow, I'd still hear it in my head. The damage is already done *g*

What really ruined some of the (manShep) romances for me was not the VA but that creepy rape face!! So, BioWare, ignore the Meer haters, just work on the facial expressions. Thank you.



One other thing, dear developers: please, don't force the voice actors to sound horrible. I'm thinking of Jacob's romance. The way femShep talks made me want to scrub in the shower just as much as the manShep rape face does! This has nothing to do with Hale's talent but with the instructions she was given. Shame on you, BioWare!



Having a silent hero is actually one (of many reasons) I hesitate buying Dragon Age.

Sure, the voice might not match what I have in mind. But a voice makes a character more real IMO. It manipulates your opinion of a character, yes, but that's often intended. Give me a villain with a creepy voice!!



No silent Shepard for me.

on topic - can't you just change the volume of the voice to 0? I think I remember there being 3 sound options. I only turned volume of effects and music down, so I don't know, but it maybe worth a try.
Of course that would also make all the other persons "unvioced"

Oh come on! Meer is not bad at all. Some things appear to be spoken out of context, but at the end of the day... So What? It's probably not even his fault. I liked what little I heard from Hale up till now just as much. SO stop whining.



If you find a way, turn his voice off, if you must. But I for one think that Meer's VA is great.

Im always surprised that when it comes to voice actors then, in my opinion, actual actors do the best jobs. I always expected that actors wouldnt take a game serious...would not really be engaged in the whole thing and just work their dialogue of and get some extra money. But I gotta say...no matter if its Martin Sheen, Seth Green or Keith David...they are great. Escpecialy Strahovski as Miranda did a fantastic job...would be hard for me to choose between Hale or Strahowski in this years VGA. Like I said she did a fantastic job as Miranda but Hale also deserves recogniation for keeping quality throughout such a giant amount of dialogue. And yes I think Meer deserves recognition too...I like em both.
And I also played the recent Call of Duty...where Gary Oldman and Sam Worthington did a great job...or Mark Hamil in Arkham Asylum.

If possible then I say get even more big names into the voice actors list.
Now if only motion capture wouldnt be so expensive...then the animations would be spot on too.

Anyway my statement obviously shows that I support voices
And as far as I know its not possible to turn of the voice.

Some people might like one VA more than the other. But no VA in ME is bad enough to justify the bashing that is going on in here.

But in all seriousness, this has been brought up a thousand times. To answer the OP, having selective audio in a game designed to have a voice actor for the main character wouldn't work. It works in Fallout and Dragon Age and so forth because the dialogue is right there in front of you, in full. Mass Effect has a summarised version, so it would be a little counterintuitive.
Also, Meer is certainly not the worst voice actor ever, and they could've done far worse - for the most part I like him. Just remember that the actors record their lines separately from everyone else, and sometimes the VO supervisor sometimes makes mistakes as to how they read their lines. Hale is by no means innocent of this!

Frankly, I couldn't imagine Mass Effect without a voiced Shepard. Don't get me wrong, I like all the Dragon Ages and Kotors of the world but in Mass Effect your character has an actual personality and that's fine by me. Also, unlike the respective protagonists from those other games, I never thought of Shepard as a representative of me. At least to me, the game is directed in a way that I vaguely steer the direction Shep goes in character and that is it. So, if the character sometimes acts in a way I wouldn't expect it's usually more of a pleasant surprise.



Also, threads like these highlight the fact that people will **** about anything and everything.

I love how one entry can blow up to become a VA bashing move, an attempt to devolve the evolution of game development. We are simply helping a fellow gamer who has problems playing maleshep because his lines come across as too condescending at times. And this person has been trying to play maleshep for ages to try the romances but can't get pass that. So anyway to edit the gamefiles would be great.



Stop picking on things like vultures, damnit.
