Is there a way to turn Shepard's voice off selectively?

Why do you care that some hate Meer's voice acting? I can't stand it, and it's the only reason I haven't done a full playthough with male Shep, that in no way affects your enjoyment of it *shrugs*

I would also love it if I could turn it off... I want to finally romance Miranda!

Because there's a clear difference between not liking something, and bashing it.

^The above.

I loathe Hale's VO but I don't mention I think she's acting like an angry **** everytime she opens her mouth and sounds like she's a chronic smoker.

And frankly I'll take Meer's flatness at times of Hale's hamfisted acting.

That's exactly my point. The OP said nothing at all about the quality of maleshep's voice, but everyone is jumping on his throat and calling him a troll. WTH...

Wasn't the OP about not liking what Shepard says during the romances because it sounds like he's a douche? I have to agree with that sentiment. (And FemShep *needs* to be muted during the Jacob romance *shudders*)

My comment were not directed at him. It were directed at the Mark Meer bashers.

The ME series would of been far better with a silent PC.

Oh god this made me lol.

OP, i don't think this thread is about turning off shepard's voice as it is protesting on the fact that shepard actually is voiced. Am i correct?

No. I'd actually prefer a voiced protagonist if I could get one I can identify with. The problem is that Shepard occasionally comes across as not very intelligent and always as completely incapable of subtlety. That is OOC for the kind of Shepard I prefer to play. Having him unvoiced would mitigate that - it would be easier to ignore the things I don't want, and since the tone carries Shepard's condescension in the romances that effect would be mitigated as well.

Meer's voice is superior to Hale's when it comes to Renegade Shepard.

on topic - can't you just change the volume of the voice to 0? I think I remember there being 3 sound options. I only turned volume of effects and music down, so I don't know, but it maybe worth a try.
Of course that would also make all the other persons "unvioced"

Yes, there's an option to turn off all dialogue (one option each for music, dialogue and sound effects). Depends entirely on whether the OP wants to go that far.

And lo, with the departure of the Talimancers, the Meer bashers have come forth to take up the mantle of Most Obnoxious And Intolerable Fandom Faction.

I think the common consensus I've seen is that Hale is much better at the Paragon delivery and Meer excels at the Renegade lines. Hale is a fantastic voice actress (in my opinion) but it's really a shame that some of her fans can't actually praise her without resorting to trying to tear down someone else. One of the reasons this bothers me is that I'm afraid that Bioware and/or EA Games will actually listen to these whiners and do something terrible.

I should mention that I'm not a "Meer basher". I do prefer Hale's voice, but the problem I have with Shepard lies as much in the character concept as in voice acting. It's just that Meer's voice underscores that "action hero of average intelligence and incapable of subtlely" character concept while Hale's voice tones it down a bit.

I'm also picking on Meer here because Shepard's condescending tone is a problem in maleShep's romances. I dislike Hale's VA in some parts of Jacob's romance, but since my femSheps tend to stick to their ME1 LIs that's not a problem for me.

Do you guys *seriously* want a silent Shepard?? Or is this just another Meer bashing thread?

I'm completely serious in wanting a silent Shepard.
No VO for Shepard would mean no money/resources spent on voicing Man-Shep/Fem-Shep.
Which would leave more room for companion dialogue, banter, romance dialogue etc.

How is having a voiced protaganist unique and original?

Because most of the RPGs don't have one.

Well its not unique or original because the Witcher did it before ME anyways.
Besides, it being not a common feature does not make it a positive one.
I'd pick more companion dialogue, more dialogue for romances, more banter and more dialogue in general over Shepard not saying what I want him to say any day.

What really ruined some of the (manShep) romances for me was not the VA but that creepy rape face!! So, BioWare, ignore the Meer haters, just work on the facial expressions. Thank you.

Say.. would you happen to have a pic of that also be able to tell me how to get the male Shep to do that face.  That creepy rape face was the inspiration on why I even made a male Shepard in the first place.

Having a silent hero is actually one (of many reasons) I hesitate buying Dragon Age.
Sure,
the voice might not match what I have in mind. But a voice makes a
character more real IMO. It manipulates your opinion of a character,
yes, but that's often intended. Give me a villain with a creepy voice!!
No silent Shepard for me.

Same here.  I like DA for what its worth but after playing the Grey Warden a fifth time....he/she starts to feel just like another adventurer.  Being able to hear your own Shepard speak was kind of cool.   It would be really awesome if we have more than one voice to choose from for the main characters.

Uhm, no I don't. But it's been going round this forum a lot. Check the motivationals thread. I realize that this particular rape face picture is tweaked. But every time Shepard smiles is still creepy. Both manShep and femShep! But in manShep's case it's worse, especially when seducing innocent little Quarian girls... femShep's smile at the end of the last Garrus romance conversation is pretty bad, though.
I wonder why they messed up the facial expressions of Shepard but other characters look ok. Is it because players creating their own faces interferes with programming?? Less pretty games with a smaller budget feature better facial expressions.

As I recall, he makes that face during one of the paragon dialogs in the Miranda romance. He says something like, 'Who said anything about love? I'm just trying to get you into bed.' And yes, that is a paragon response.

Da-yum I need to see this on YouTube :D

Following the thread, I doubt there is a way. I do prefer Mark Meer's voice to Jen Hale's. Images of Bastila flood in and somehow I dislike hearing her voice for 30+40 hours (ME1 + ME2). I love KotOR but I was so happy when Bastila got spirited away by Malak.

Well if you guys can't stand Meer's voice acting( for some reason) then you should:

A) Deal with it
B) Don't play as Male Shep
C) Play whole game without any sound

Because I doubt Bioware would give that option in Mass Effect, ever.

and that's about it!

most of my playthroughs (> 80%) are femshep because:
a) I'm not too fond of maleshep's voice (on character setup a voice option akin of dao's would be nice);
B) I can't seem to make a decent-looking maleshep.

regardless, when I do play as maleshep I tend to pick my dialogue option and skip the voicing (don't know if the 360 version has that; the PC's does).
I must also admit that although I'm a guy (or maybe because I'm a guy) I prefer to play and look at a female character than a male one (I can actually make good-looking femsheps and my malesheps tend to look like cons)
