It'd be interesting. I wonder if, in ME3, the Leviathan of Dis will end up being integral to defeating the Reapers? If so, the Batarians may have to be diplomacized with.

I'd be down for a badass Batarian squadmate, maybe either Sentinel or Soldier to fill the hole left by the Virmire Casualty.

don't care what reasoning anybody comes up with, I just hate batarians. My Shep killed every batarian he could. And I don't really want dlc to commit war crimes I just wanted to convey how strongly I feel against a batarian squadmate. In fact I hope the game being announced december 11th is an ME FPS where all you do is shoot batarians. But i digress. Please no batarian squadmates bioware. Give us more Wrex instead.

While I don't have as massive of a hate for them I basically agree.  I hate when people humnize the "evil" alien race.  Keep the evil slaver race evil, don't give me the they are all individuals crap.

Just as long as we don't have a Volus squad mate I'll be fine with this!

If you don't like humanization of "evil" aliens, you should probably not play Mass Effect.  After all, krogans are supposed to be brutal savages, and turians are ruthless war-criminals.  Oh, and the geth are totally out to kill all organics.

In fact, I think humanization of "evil" aliens is kind of the point.

In other words, you humans are all racist!

(PS: Fear not, for the Reapers will most certainly stay evil.)

I doubt it.  It wouldn't be a BioWare game without some sort of big twist where we find out that there's some logical reasoning behind their actions.

In regards to the humanization, it all comes down to the wise words of Ashley Williams, "human or alien, we're all just animals".  One dimensional characters with no redeemable qualities just aren't BioWare's style, even for their villains.

ever heard of the darkspawn? they seemed pretty one dimensional to me but hey, whatever. I thought that mass effect was all about taking you on humancentric adventure and showing you the impressions that we've made of other species. humans aren't shown to feel as strongly against the other races as say, Wrex or Saren. But the batarians are introduced as bad guys from the beginning that the established races didn't much care for even before their largely self-imposed exil and hegemony imposed ban on civilian travel.

Because they killed Shepard's family during the raid on Mindoir?  (possibly if you're a Colonist)
Because they enslaved and killed children during the Skyllian Blitz?
Because the more militant factions have little regard for any species but their own, and barely any more for themselves?

We've seen that they're all not like that, but their kind have performed some of the most dispicable terrorist acts in the game's recent timeline.

Humans have performed much, much worse in game and especially RL.

@wrexfan32hanalei: You COULD say the same about the geth, you know. Bad guys right from the tutorial, they were. The darkspawn were pretty much more akin to husks than anything else, as they didn't have an independent will and were pawns of the archdemon. Batarians, on the other hand, are fully sentient and have free will.

"Humans aren't shown to feel as strongly against the other races as say, Wrex or Saren." Really? Did you completely miss the Terra Firma bit? Cerberus? Saren was a (sexy) nutbag, but Wrex seemed pretty damn tolerant compared to them.

PS: It's only human-centric if you play renegade ;-P

@Omega-202: You're right, the Reapers probably have some logical, albeit very twisted reason for what they're doing. Does that make them good guys? Probably not.

NO! NO! NO!

If there is one, make it optional, Fiona would never work with a batarian.

There we go!  Make it optional, and everyone wins!  I can see a kill-or-spare situation...

GodWood Shepard (not actually his name) had his friends and mother slaughtered on Mindoir.
He also wiped out an entire unit of batarian slavers on Torfan.
He has no issues with working with a [non-slaver] batarian.

It always makes me laugh when I see paragons being racist towards batarians.

I know, right?

EDIT: Today's Cerberus Daily News is uncannily appropriate:

Youth United is a galaxy-wide extranet group that aims to connect young
people of all species. Founder Darchas Clark says he wants to provide a
helpful, positive environment for children to learn about each others'
cultures. A batarian raised in a human family, Clark says he knows
things can be difficult for young people of mixed backgrounds. "My
parents were good people, but they didn't know how to help with my
struggle to relate to either batarian or human cultures when I was a
kid," he recalls. "It's important that Youth United lets kids know
they're not alone in that struggle. There's still too many vicious and
ignorant attitudes towards mixed families out there." The group's
services include chat sessions with peers and counselors, free classes
on alien languages and cultures, and a guide to the galaxy's major legal
systems.

I also agree with the post right below me.

If Mass Effect has taught me anything, it's that a good character is a good character, regardless of species. For instance, I'm not fond of the Krogan, but Wrex is an undeniably excellent character. And look at Legion. Who would of thought, thinking back to ME1, that you'd have a geth as a party member? But he's become a fan favorite.

If the character is done correctly, I would have no problem with a Batarian squadmate.

In ME2, squad mates never bunked in conventional cabins, so in ME3 i'd be happy to let the hypothetical Batarian squad mate sleep in the airlock.

If ME3 will tell me that batarians are not all evil and really evil were "batarian heretics" I'll grab popcorn and wait for good Reapers or Collectors. Batarians are isolationists whose culture is based on slavery - even Krogans are better because passion to destruction may be sublimated in sport or some kind of work, while seeing every person as a tool for developing own class state is very hard to take from someone's brain.

If batarians sensible considered own lack of popularity as result of own decision and not blame evil humans who on unknown reasons want to have own place in galaxy and don't want to be a slave, it will be discussable. But now even saved on Omega batarian says that he may be hallucinating while wishing Shepard good luck.

Plus, won't it be insulting for Colonist/Sole survivor first to work with terrorists which left him both psychically and physically traumatised and later with one of people who killed everyone he loved? I'd better kill possible squadmate slowly, in best case (e.g. saved Shepard's life) force him to go away

don't be ridiculous, i'd only airlock him in my renegade and paragade playthroughs.

That paragade term is nonsense.

If your Paragon bar is higher, your paragon.

Deal with it.

Naw, bro.  I play paragon on most of my runs.  I think it's just cuz they aren't as sexy, badass, or goofy as the other races.

If asari were behind Mindoir I'm sure they'd probably be cool with it.
