don't care what reasoning anybody comes up with, I just hate batarians. My Shep killed every batarian he could. And I don't really want dlc to commit war crimes I just wanted to convey how strongly I feel against a batarian squadmate. In fact I hope the game being announced december 11th is an ME FPS where all you do is shoot batarians. But i digress. Please no batarian squadmates bioware. Give us more Wrex instead.

wow dude your pretty brutal. What if it turns out theres a batarian teammate in ME 3 that is actually nice and stuff ? and turns out to be one of your favorite characters ?

There's no way I would want a Batarian squadmate at all. Period.

@curly haired boy: You know, humans used to do that slavery thing, too. Us Americans, champions of freedom and equality, only stopped, what, 150 years ago? I'd also like to mention a certain genocidal event that took place roughly 60 years ago, but that'd be breaking Godwin's Law. Not that I have to, really, because humans are STILL F*CKING DOING IT. Darfur! Cambodia! ET F*CKING CETERA!

Really, batarian culture is just a parody of the dark side of humanity. We hate them because we see ourselves in them. However, an individual born into a culture like that isn't evil, just unlucky. In fact, there are several batarians that probably disagree with the Hegemony's current policies, but we never hear about them because A.) they aren't pirates or mercs or anything, so they probably would never leave batarian space and B.) I wouldn't put it past the Hegemony to arrest and execute anyone ballsy enough to oppose them.

Clark is a perfect example of my point. Because he was raised by humans, he was never taught to see other species as inferior, and he was never exposed the the oppressive caste system that governs batarian society. Batarians who were born and raised within their own culture, however, don't see anything wrong with what they're doing because they've been taught to think that way from day one. Besides, the Hegemony is sneaky, and intentionally filters any news that enters or exits batarian space. The common batarian citizen probably knows next to nothing about Midnoir or the attempted attack on Terra Nova.

Bottom line: You hate batarians because the game teaches you to hate batarians, and batarians hate us because they've been taught to hate us. It's something that happens in real life all the time, and therefore don't be surprised when some rockin' batarian badass joins your crew and shows you just how much like us they really are.

Didn't Garrus have a Batarian hacker on his team?

Make the batarian squadmember voiced by Tim Curry and then make him the most pleasant character in all three games.

This will confuse the **** out of everyone while also making him awesome because it is Tim Curry.

The Batarian will only be allowed to live on my team if he assists me in bringing down the Batarian government and major corporations.

Otherwise he's getting a first class ticket on airlock express.

I thought it was explained fairly succinctly in BDTS and the codex entries that so many Batarians have become terrorists because humanity started muscling in on the Skyllian Verge and the Council refused to take the Batarians' side. Up to that point they were imperialistic and aggressive, but I wouldn't say they were terrorists.

Slavery's been considered acceptable in virtually every culture throughout human history at one point or another, and is also practiced by Asari on Ilium (albeit without the brutality, but slavery is slavery). Given that fact it seems like a poor reason to justify killing every single batarian that ever existed, regardless of your opinion on the morality of it.

Oh God no. I hate everything about batarians so much. I hope for the next dlc they let you go to the batarian homeworld and just fly around bombarding hospitals, schools, retirement homes. Even their face is a hideous mockery of the human form. Bioware went through some effort to make a race that is very hateable. Can't we have one alien race that it's totally ok to hate? They're like evil space north koreans/terrorist/mosters. I'm sorry about my long response but I really really loathe the idea of a batarian squadmate.

looks like your the one to hate why kill their women and childern?

Because they killed Shepard's family during the raid on Mindoir?  (possibly if you're a Colonist)
Because they enslaved and killed children during the Skyllian Blitz?
Because the more militant factions have little regard for any species but their own, and barely any more for themselves?

We've seen that they're all not like that, but their kind have performed some of the most dispicable terrorist acts in the game's recent timeline.
Personally, I don't believe that carte blanche retribution would be a good thing, but you couldn't blame certain versions of Shepard if you account for his past.

EDIT:

They were also responsible for the events in Mass Effect: Galaxy where they tried to kill the Council.

And you blame there whole race for that? Blame the many for the few?

I support the idea of a Batarian squadmate,.

A batarian would be cool.  The turians and humans both mistrust each other. So following the logic against the baterians, (shepards shady past with them would mean that he would "never accept a baterian squad mate", we should get rid of Garrus?

You know how much better the world would be if we were to realize that individuals can not be held responsible for the actions or the stereotype of their group. The middle east, ireland, etc etc etc. Some batarians hold slaves. Does that mean that all of them agree with it? Does that mean that slaveholders don't have some redeeming qualities. George Washington, Jefferson, etc. . . Holding slaves was wrong, but should they be judged as "evil" simply because they held slaves?

Hate the Reapers, then.  Or play a shooter, specifically one with zombies or demons.

I can't believe some people are baaaawing over the possible addition of deep, emotional, and intelligent content.  Sheesh.

I want to see things from the Batarians point of view for a change without them being evil, maybe a Batarian who dosent want to be a slaver, or terrorist, a Batarain who wants Batarians and humans to make peace.

As for me, I do really want a batarian squadmate. I also do want:

- him to have an interesting personality (yeeeeah, that is a must)
- an option to mention/discuss/etc several events from Shep's life like Torfan/terrorist attack on Terra Nova/etc
- an option to kill him instead of recruiting/skip his recruiting - not that I'd ever do this but seems some fellow forumites would not want a batarian squadmate and I don't see any point in forcing them into something they're not keen on
- him to tell me more about his government/race/culture and, last but not least, him to express his personal opinion regarding batarian goverment and official politics
- making batarians less 'black' and more 'gray'

I do think that's possible because:

- all squadmates are humanoid, use the same weapons and the same animations during battles. Out of all non-squad races we already know only batarians satisfy these requirements.
- Bioware seems to like the "one squaddie per race" principle (except for humans). Wrex and Liara were out in ME2 so we got Grunt and Samara/Morinth + new aliens. Should Bioware decide to bring ME2 squaddies back (and damn I hope they would), newbies can be either humans (humans aren't so exciting but they are a 'safe choice'), or batarian (see point one as to why not elcor/volus/whatever).
- we fought geth in ME1 and got Legion in ME2 to find out this race in general isn't neither pro-Reapers nor pro-war. Why not show batarians in slighly different light?

On the other hand, we don't know anything about raloi yet and Bioware can still make new races up (though tbh I think we have enough races already and I'd rather learn something new about already existing ones). So, I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

But hell, how do I want to have a good-written batarian squadmate.

A race of beings that is totally evil all the time is boring and lame. Which is why I'm happy they gave the geth actual charactization outside of "genocidal robots"

Naw, bro.  Mass Effect was ruined forever the day it was released.  Because, you know, everything sucks unless it's just the way the most vocal fans want it.  Therefore, since the most vocal fans can't even agree on what they want, ME will always be ruined forever.

the average batarian citizen was hating on us long before the hegemony's self imposed exile. and it's not like we're the only race in disagreement with them, according to cerberus daily news they fought with with the council races quite a bit. we're just the only ones with the balls to really confront them. plus, stereotypes exist for a reason. even Modin says that other races conform to the general traits of their species. krogan are warriors, turians are civil servants, salarians are clever. apparently batarians are just no damn good.

Hilariously, the krogan have probably done things more horrible than any batarian but they tend to get their actions in the rebellions glossed over because "lol badass"
