Dont get me wrong, I get the constant balancing, I played SC1/BW for several years, and saw the many evolutions in the Meta Game. I still play SC2 to this day, not digging the mega macro sim city factor that much anymore though, gets boring real quick. (and I am a Blizzard fan, dont mistake me for a random "hater" I own every Blizzard game ever made, ditto goes for Bioware.)
But I swear to god, all these SC fanboys touting the fact that SC2 is an "eSport" as the primary basis for why it should be game of the year is utterly retarded.
Case in point:
Halo has been part of the "eSport" scene since its inception, same goes for Counter Strike, and quite frankly, there are MORE players, in MORE regions for those titles, same goes for COD, Street Fighter (actually, SF games have a VERY long history of eSport success in MANY regions).
Are any of those titles many of which had a version come out this very year worthy of GOTY just based off thier MORE successful eSport status? (as based off number of total players, and supported regions, international tournaments, etc.)
Yeah, I didnt think so......
The massively retconned story in SC2 is a very, VERY sore point amongst the SC2 community, has been since day 1. The fact that the SP did not live up to the classic SC/BW story line is common place conversation on startcraft2.com, plain as day.
Yes, SC2 is a good game, but Blizzard stumbled in several areas, Bnet functionality, no LAN support, the Single player, etc. I would honestly agree with SC2 taking GOTY if the Single player was up to the standard we all expect from Blizzard, but it wasnt, and if Bnet 2.0 was actually an improvement instead of lacking many, MANY features.
Just being an eSport in Korea doesnt make for GOTY, sorry. (yes I get that there are tourneys in other regions as well, including NA, but it doesnt even hold a candle to the other aforementioned eSport games)
I never said that Starcraft 2 being an eSport in South Korea automatically puts it in line for GotY, of which this voting from G4 is simply a vote to see what people's favorite game of 2010 is, and
not actually a true GotY award to be handed out.
If the Starcraft 2 fanboys are saying this or that, then they are simply taking this vote too seriously, and you as well considering some of the context that you lay out.
I've already stated what each game does best at, and it's impossible to even contemplate comparing the two games in like aspects. You cannot compare each single player aspect as Mass Effect 2 is solely about single player driven storytelling. Starcraft 2 is, whether you think so or not, a superb competitive RTS to follow up on Starcraft 1's success from the multiplayer side of things.
I don't know of very many people who bought Starcraft 2 with the intention of the single player campaign and story alone, they as well as I bought it for the proven multiplayer aspect. Which obviously Mass Effect 2 does not have, so again no comparison can be made.
Also you'd be surprised just how much of an eSport Starcraft 2 is outside of South Korea. It's equal to all of the other games you mentioned, no matter if it's not a console game or not. European professional tournaments as well as North American, and especially the MLG tournaments that are held on a regular basis, are just as profound as Halo, CoD, and etc., etc.
With all this said... Voting is over with and so should this conversation.
