So, here's what happens: after 5 or so minutes of playing DAO will suddendly stop working... the archetypical pop up "DAOriginsLauncher.exe stopped working" bores me ad nauseam... is there a way to solve this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Game Version: v1.04 - It's the Ultimate edition, so it's practically got every add-on you can think of installed.

Retail or Digital: Digital Version - GamersGate.

Processor Manufacturer: AMD

Processor Type: Phenom X3 720.

Processor Core Speed: 2.80 GHz

Operating System / Service Pack: Windows 7 x64

System RAM: 4.0 GBs

Direct3D APIs dated: DirectX 11 (Aug2009) or later

Video Card Manufacturer: nVIDIA

Video Card Model: GeForce 9800GT

Video Card RAM: 512 MBs DDR3

Video Card Driver Version: 260.99

Sound Card Manufacturer: Creative Labs

Sound Card Model: SB XFi 5.1

Sound Card Driver date: Latest, this I really don't know.

Sound Card Driver Version: 6.0.1.255

DVD Type: DVD/RW

Hard Drive Type: SATA

Free Disk Space: C:\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 98GB out of 146GB left... in DA:O's HDD there's 343 left out of 747.

Power Supply: Corsair 400w - don't have the box right here now, so can't answer the amperage thing.

Is this enough? -.-

As for the overall behaviour of the game when problem takes place: t's just out of sheer randomness that the game decides to CTD (yes, no lockup or something - just Crashes to Desktop and prompts me to the one-and-only "thing stopped working" pop up we all know and hate...) , for I couldn't isolate the problem in any particular instance... it just happens.

I didn't see anything that set off any alarms for me, sorry.  You might try some Clean Boot diagnostic runs to see if it's a program interfering with the game, such as an AV.  Many of those simply do not get along well with games.

I'm playing the Fade level - the game crashes to desktop in the middle of the battle against the sloth in the Sloth demon's sanctum. I kill 1, 2, 3 or 4 incarnations of this Sloth boss and it crashes to desktop...9 times now!

Is this the same issue you are having? Is there a fix? I tried EA help and they told me things like empty temp files, change the resolution on my 24 inch monitor to 1024x768, and nothing worked.

Microsoft has an excellent description of how to use it ~~ a different page of advice for each of their Windows versions.  Go here:

Good news and bad news......I reduced the processor affinity to run on only 3 processors in Task Manager and was able to complete that fight. However, the next "BOSS" fight with Uldred crashes now. I am still on 3 processors. What a piece of junk! This really sucks because this game "was" my favorite game. I will not purchase the next one if this is any type of preview of what is to come.

I have the same nvidia driver as you and the game became unstable eventually crashing twice. I then tired of it went to the nvidia control panel and pressed the default settings button on 3d settings then clicked apply and set the physx to gpu instead of auto. Since then no crashes, card does not get hot and the  game plays really smooth even in Denerim where the problem was very bad.

Update: I played throught the entire Leliana's Song episode and suffered no CTDs... yet, playing the Origins campaign it's quasi mandatory that it will come to happen one way or another... has anyone come up with a solution to this?

The same thing is happening to me (Windows 7 x64 also) every 20 mins or so. I just started happening in the Cirlce of Mages quest line.

Sorry, but playing "Me, too!" is a useless tactic. Only if every single component, every single service, every detail, had been perfectly, absolutely a duplicate of the thread author's, would such a comment have value.

This may seem like a stupid question but did you try launching the game directly instead of through the launcher? It sounds like DALauncher.exe is the corrupt file that is causing the crashes.

Any other ideas?

Has anyone found a solution to this? Months have passed since I started this thread and a solution has yet to be found.

Lots of solutions get posted to this forum every week. Here's a collection of recent ones... perhaps something here will give you an idea. Otherwise, you can contact EA support directly at support.ea.com.

Tried contacting EA support but it didn't work... will try some of the solutions you provided, but I've kinda lost hope that I'll ever finish this game.

*sigh*

So basically you didn't search for "crash" topics with the search tools in this board? As always...

If you'd have done that, you knew beforehand that there are many posters who also encounter crash after crash.

Why? We already know that patches 1.03 and 1.04 made the game unstable and we are waiting almost a year now for a _good_patch.

You cannot fix it on your own, as it's a problem within the game itself. Try to ask if BioWare fixes those issues for you, maybe you'll have better luck with an answer than we have, because we are requesting a good patch for months now without getting any answer or respond whatsoever.

I still think it is one of the patches that caused this trend, I played through the whole game without any issues before the patches. I'm currently trying to replay it one more time before DA 2 comes out and guess what random crashes to desktop. My most recent ones were in the dalish camp as soon I took a step forward and boom ctd, next crash happened during conversation with the keeper, next crash in the forest right after a battle. And now I haven't had a crash for awhile and played through an entire area. I can start the game right after a crash and not have a crash again for awhile and can play until I quit. It just seems too random. My quicksave finger is getting sore having to quicksave too often incase it decides to crash.

By avoiding the expansion and the DLCs that demand the last two of the patches, you can stop at 1.02A when using Vista / Windows 7.  However, don't get the idea this is more than a minority of gamers using those OSes who have this problem, although the size of the minority should have been large enough for Bioware to have responded to before now.

Windows XP does not have the problem with Patch 1.03 and 1.04.
