Hmmm.. Are you healing your party and yourself? I just point the spell at the portraits on the left side and it heals them.

I also get Mind Blast and Rock Armor. Rock Armor only adds a little armor though, and Mind Blast doesn't last very long.

As with all spells, Rock Armor depends on your Spellpower and can add up to an additional 12.25 points of armor.

My arcane warrior had an armour rating of 23 when wearing drakescale leather with rock armor enabled.
That's almost as much protection as you get from wearing certain types of Heavy/Massive armor.

Hey Deynda. The advice already given seems to be fairly sound.
A point that may be relevant which has not yet been touched upon is the order of the quests you are doing? Although the map allows for you to travel anywhere, there is an ideal order in which to follow to prevent too much difficulty - at least for the main storyline. It follows as such:

1. Ostagar and Korcari Wilds
2. Lothering
3. Circle Tower*
4. Redcliffe Village and Redcliffe Castle
5. Brecilian Forest
6. Haven
7. Denerim and Orzammar in either order you prefer
8. Landsmeet and the rest of the game

You can find more at Dragon Age Wiki:

and

Hope that helps :)

Some other general tips:

Mage:

Use spells wich immobilise/incapacitate enemies such as Cone of Cold, Paralyze, Mass Paralysis, Glyph of Paralysis, Mind Blast, Sleep, Crushing prison. Mind blast can be used offensively by running into a bunch of eneimes and using it instead of waiting to be surrounded.

Fireball can also be used but don't aim it at any particular enemy otherwise you may get caught in the blast when they run towards you - aim it in the air so that only enemies get caught in the blast.

When using cone of cold, position your mage so that it freezes as many enemies as possible. Then use your other party members to shatter them.

Miasma helps you run away from enemies targetting you with melee attacks. Handy while waiting for spells to cooldown.

Mana Clash is especially useful for taking out other mages, especially if you have high spellpower.

Animate dead is also a good spell to have - it helps even the odds a little.

When levelling, spend all points on magic til you get to 36 - this allows you to get spells as soon as possible.
Then raise constitution to at least 20 - this gives you more health so you don't die as quickly.
Finally, spend all subsequent level-up points on magic and willpower.

Currently playing a mage (+ rogue) on normal. Once you get past the origins section, the difficulty of some fights seems to ramp up noticeably. Found that micromanaging individual party members in the tougher fights is pretty much essential and that just relying on ai tactics usually results in a wipe.

Taking out/disabling enemy casters first where possible tends to save a lot of pain - alternatively pulling melee foes out of line of sight of their casters and archers seems an effective (if cheesy) tactic. Of course different fights present different problems, which keeps it interesting.

I went for HARD mode for my last 4 playthroughs and the it showed exactly what my weaknesses are and what the whole idea of surviving at NORMAL-NIGHTMARE was in DA:O.

1) POTION CHUG
If you're getting ravaged by a bunch of darkspawn, bandits, undead, or even a boss, the best thing was to POTION CHUG. Keep on chugging those potions whenever you hit under 50% of health. To get plenty of potions, try making them yourself or get your companion to do it for ya. You must the the herbalism skill to make potions/poultices from low-potent. All you need are a bunch of flasks and elfroots. There is an unlimited supply of elfroots at the dalish camp in the Brecilian Forest.

2) USE YOUR FRIENDS FOR TIGHT SITUATIONS.
Take advantage of your party members. Try to have 2 different classes in your party. If you're a warrior you'd be choosing a mage and a rogue, the third can be your choice.

The mage is your best friend for controlling the battlefield. Cone of Cold is especially useful since it has the best chance of freezing a group of enemies who are all in line. Fireball can also be useful since it has a good chance of getting that knockdown effect on normal sized enemies. Mages can also have the ability to heal you or your squad if one of your mage's classes is the Spirit Healer. Spirit Healers also have the ability to revive your fallen companions. Keep your mages from a distance, they are the lightly armored ones and have the lowest HP.

The rogues are your money makers and "money = power". Have a rogue on your party that can unlock chests. You earn EXP and get good stuff out of it. If the items inside the chest aren't useful to you, don't ignore, instead collect and sell it. This also goes for looting off dead enemies. Rogues are also great for going behind enemy lines or attacking from a distance with their bows and arrows. There are 3 types of rogues you can be in DA:O:
- Range
- Stealth
- Tank

My companion, Leliana, is a ranged rogue. Rogues are the best for range because their stats are mostly focused on the DEX attribute and that increases the damage for bows and arrows. A ranged rogues job in combat is to weaken an enemy's defenses, distract, and/or control the battlefied (if you have the scatter shot ability).

You will get the hang of it, don't be embarrassed at all. Way back when I first played the game I was dying to the wolves at the beginning of the wildes, not a party wipe, but a couple of the team, then again at the emissary there and the camp to the east, and then the refugees outside of Loth and the bandit captain. Damn, I used to die a lot, now on Nightmare with Combat Tweaks scaling level 3 I don't die at all unless I am a mage or rogue that just jumps right into the middle of the mobs.

It is important to note that range makes a difference to the monsters hostility. If your PC is the one leading the way (which I always do no matter what the circumstance), then he or she will become the first target of the monsters and it will take a while to get rid of the aggro. Mages and Rogues need to be set to ranged in tactics and backed away from combat. Think of the Ogre at the top of the tower in Ostagar, run Alistair up to and send your archer and mage back to the edge so they don't get caught in his stomps. If you are fighting malbari or ogres keep a stun handy as it will break overwhelm or grab, which can kill some characters faster than you can heal them.

Alistair needs to be full shield, so he needs at least 26 Dex, and 38 Strength for the top level armor. You can put points into Con, but I think its been generally proven that Dex will serve you better than Con. I don't put any points into it on any of my characters anymore.

Wynne is the most important addition to your party, that's the biggest reason to do the tower first, and you get some free stat points. Leliana should be a bow user only. I only play with Combat Tweaks so I forget what vanilla archery was like but I think Dex is screwed up for ranged attacks. If Suppressing Fire (mode) is at all like what it's like in Combat Tweaks then that is the best mode for her to run in the early game, later when she gets more gear and stamina you can add other modes or her songs, but that fire mode makes a big difference.

I don't know, you will get the hang of it, but definitely have the tactics set. I think there are some defaults in there that are a good guide, but you will need to add potion drinking.
