probably, but being part of the noble amell family we might get a glimpse of it early on

Noble? As far as I know there has been no mention of the Amell family having any nobility.

The Amell family is noble, it should be in the what we know thread
EDIT: Ninjas, Damn

Amell is. Hawke isn't.

The Amell family is nobility in Ferelden, not the Free Marches. And I don't think we have any proof of being part of that family after fleeing from Lothering either.

What's the design on the awnings? Some of them have the templar sword, but others have

(going down)

Five pointed star

Bird (eagle?) on a sun background - the sun is a sign for the maker in Thedas

Castle by water - Kirwall itself?

I'm really loving the direction they have gone in for Kirkwall, the awnings/banners/things in particular, very vibrant when offset against the stark white walls of the city.

I wonder if the staircase we see in the Destiny trailer is one of the staircases from Lowtown to Hightown.

The one in that trailer seems to go down to the ground and up to a closed city gate. It looks like the entrance to Kirkwall.

Ah, must have missed that info thanks :)

I agree Apollo, I love the colour design in DA2 so far.

I was thinking it might be a symbol for Andastre, (along with the sun on the staff the OP pointed out), I couldn't remember if that was a sun or just a flame in DAO though.

According to Dragon Age Wiki, they are a noble family from Kirkwall.

Well what do you know.

And now it makes sense for Hawke to flee there.

I'm loving all the warm red and orange accents. I mean, I love Tolkien and all but the man did not enjoy warm colors.

The artwork is stunning, especially the crisp atmosphere and bold architecture.

Only entrance/exit is down those steps.... except for the hidden passage that is always there and obviously end up using at some point...

I've been impressed with all the scenery art. Really well done.

Interesting city planning concept, too. How do they get supplies up top? Winches etc.?

Am I the only one who thinks that guy in white looks like Altair from Assassins Creed. (The buildings kind of look fit for parkour, coincidentally). If DA2 is as beautiful as Assassins Creed, I'll be happy!

Letting my GM mind wander I would have canals cut into the city. The walls of Kirkwall steadily rising around them with poor living on the walls/at the base. Crisscrossing the canals and dangling down are rope and winches to bring up the food, supplies, etc. to the rich quite literally out of the stretched out arms of the poor.

Kirkwall is sounding more massive every day. Mines, eh? You mean the kind you spelunk in?

Water powered lifts could be used to get suppies & water up. I believe the romans did this.

I'm loving the concept art, but when you compare that concept art to the in game shots of Kirkwall, it just doesn't match up. Its the same problem of Origins having great concept art and the in game stuff not holding up its end of the bargain.

I think its mostly the lighting which is always so great in concept art, but is just totally flat in game. I really, really hope they improve the overall lighting system drastically.

Anybody else liking where the design of kirkwall is going, hope may be the first step on the road to disappointment but i'll indulge this illusion for now after all apathy is death.

The shine on the buildings in the background give me the impression it's a matte painting. I can't shake the feeling this is taking place in a theater (admittedly one on an impressive scale).

Why are the stairs the only escape? Don't they have gnomish dirigibles, or ornathopters, or at least a waterslide?
