I don't care what anyone says, the names Hightown and Lowtown are poo.
Concept art is pretty though.

Its all part of the "dumbing down" thats going on, no more remembering complicated area names, We now have 'hightown' and "lowtown", probably seperated by "middle lane" maybe a "bridge road" leading over "big river" running around the city.

ya names, seem like unfinished storyboard names to me.

I quite like the names. They actually you know sound like what you would casually call a place in a city. Just like with a modern city; downtown, docks, etc. To me it grounds it more and not just going off on silly high fantasy type names.

And I thought Sylvius the Mad complaining about Hawke's family sharing the same skin color as him/her was bad.

Yes certainly there are specific names for places in cities but it isn't a universal. Plus hell talking about New York you have stuff like Uptown, Financial District, Midtown, etc. I am sure there will be more specific names as well but it shouldn't be that every place in a city has some fanciful fantasy name.

Bethany: Okay now, Varric, what part of town are we in now?

Varric: Well since we're in the Red Torch district I'd have to say...

Carver: *flirts with Courtesan*

Varric: Trannytown.

Carver: *looks shocked for a moment - squints at the Courtesan - shrugs*

Kirkwall is really shaping up to be a fantastic setting. I'm looking forward to exploring its streets and its history.

aww come on!
I was only half serious, I like to play devils advocate sometimes. The post after was heavy on the sarcasm too but lets be 100% real here. I see not hating the names but I cant really see the names as being actually good names or especially emotion or thought provoking, just kinda blah.

Everything else is gonna be hot rod samurai and over the top, why stop at the names?

They could have called them Arthel District, or Gilded Mount, or the Thanith Slums. Noun-Verb names aren't thought provoking. Everyone likes complex dynamic names like Conan, Aragorn, Gandalf, Tannis, Raistlin, Elrond & such. They don't like John Shieldbash, or Jane the Redhaired.

I think you meant Adjective - noun but yeah, I agree with you. "the Alienage" was even better then "Elf Town"

Right. Because towns have never named things about their position, nope. Never. It should all sound like fantasy names that are made up on the spot. Why not call Hightown jnfswea- uhfbsawe-ukfbarsek-bhaeb Quarter?

really dave? I would have though a better defence then that. Im not asking for crazy names...

Orzammar "diamond district" - "dust town" while not super crazy gibberish like you suggest are still more creative then "High" and "Low"

Both examples you gave have the same reasoning for their names than Hightown and Lowtown, they represent what they are.

For example: My entire area is named West (-classified-) because it's in the West, move to the east and you've got the same name but it's East (-classified-). We're still the same area, we're just classified differently. It doesn't need anything special to split us up, why does Kirkwall?
