I think your title is still misleading, What if the mage is transgendered or mono gendered?

If only body language existed.

Think of the possibilities.

Plus there's always sign language.

Come to think of it, because of the mage toung issue, the qunari were probably the first community in Thedas to make an organized effort to spread sign language as an official secondary language in their culture.

If they're transgendered, they'd be a man or a woman. If they're cigendered, they'd be a man or a woman.

The word you're looking for is genderqueer or intergendered.

I'd like to see a female qunari companion, unfortunately this spot is highly unlikely.

Assuming they didn't start removing fingers to stop more of this communication.

I fear in a game where someone who is supposed to be afraid gets labelled as "herp derp" that might be problematic both to implement and then to be correctly interpreted.

And let's not even get into how everyone in Thedas seemingly arches the eyebrow exactly the same no matter the context...

Well Sten said they remove their tounges so they can never cast spells, presuming sign language can't be used to cast spells, there'd be no reason to cut their fingers off.

Weren't their tongues could out so that they could not pass on forbidden magic, like Blood Magic. And also so that when they turn into demons they can't communicate? I don't know how that's important but maybe demons (like Desore demons) have magic that needs words?

EDIT: Changed Lust Demons into Desire Demons. Sorry lack of sleep.

My assumption would be that they cut the tongues out of their mages simply for the purposes of control, whatever the circumstance.

I still would like to think a tongueless mage could get around the communication problem if they really wanted to. Maybe with sign language, or telepathy, or a magic tongue, or magic letters written in the air, or a magic staff whose focus crystal can project words like a loudspeaker, or...

Officialy they've only announced Varric, Isabella, and Aveline as companions.

I don't even think the devs said that MEG was a companion.

But to answer your question, I would like Anders, but there was a chance of him dying in Awakening, so it probably won't happen.

The Golden Girls were Dorthy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia.

And how do you know that series? I thought you were 19.

Aermas wrote...

Very Important. But from a character depth stand point I could see him/her being tongueless

How does lacking a tongue give a character depth? If anything, it would lead to the character being shallow as it would significantly cut the PC's and other companions' ability to have a conversation with them.

Leliana: I saw that! You were playing with a kitten.
Qunari mage: ....
Leliana: You big softie you.
Qunari mage: ....
Leliana: Softie!

Actually, just because you asked...a tongueless character would posess more depth than a normal tongued character. Their mouth would have a capacity for greater volume due to the lack of the tongue, therefore giving their mouth more depth than an average person.

Now, having a tongue would actually make the character's mouth more shallow. Image IPB

I dont think Varic is a companion actually. More like your contact-person in kirkwall. He is narrating the story as well, wich means he will survive the game no matter what. Wouldn`t make sense to have him as a companion. However; the elf character that has popped up recentley, looks like a rogue though. I suspect we will be getting more than just 2 of each classes as companions anyway. Mass effect 2 had...12? I think. I doubt they will go back to just 6 companions for this one. Just speculating of course.

I've been watching my way through West Wing (again) recently.

As soon as someone mentioned a tongueless mage it made me think of Joey Lucas and the brilliant way they use her translater, Kenny as her voice. You might need something more complex than a parrot, but hey, Mabari seem to understand langauge. Something symbiotic has a lot of comic potential.

Still, I'd be interested to know what the typical mage view was on having their tongues removed. One imagines they'd be kind of upset about it, but maybe they see themselves the way the rest of the Qunari see them and believe the act to be essential.

Not sure if that really follows; i mean, it's not like companions absolutely need to have option to die at some point in the story, and in regular combat everyone gets up as soon as it's done unless it's full wipe/game over screen.
