I dont think Varic is a companion actually. More like your contact-person in kirkwall. He is narrating the story as well, wich means he will survive the game no matter what. Wouldn`t make sense to have him as a companion.

Not sure if that really follows; i mean, it's not like companions absolutely need to have option to die at some point in the story, and in regular combat everyone gets up as soon as it's done unless it's full wipe/game over screen.

Exactly. So how can Varic be narrating if the whole party is killed? It can happen in the game, and then its game over. and yet we have scenes where Varic, sometime in the future, is discussing events with Cassandra.

He could be lying. Gosh the unreliable narrator can be fun.

As for the mage...I am guessing a male elf. There were no male mages in the original game (not counting the expansion pack and the DLC`s here), so I am betting we get one this time. My bet is on a male elf.

I want Finn back. Well, actually I want Anders back but I don't think it'll happen however much I want it to due to the % of people who he want be alive for. With Meg being confirmed not to be a Mage or a Dalish (so not a Keeper) I would think it unlikely it'll be another male Elf, unless he is -very- different.

Edit: Huh kinda took for granted that the other/next Mage will be male, which I suppose is a leap. Still, it would seem likely if just because we've already had so many memorable female Magi companions already in the series.

I don't think he'd have his own unique weapon to be confirmed in the game (Bianca) and appear in screenshots fighting with the party (admitedly within Kirkwall) if he wasn't a companion. Not to mention it would be almost beyond Mhari levels of deception and misdirection from Bioware should he not be.

Plus if he isn't travelling with Hawke he only hears about all the exciting stuff second hand, hardly makes him the best person to give the Chantry the inside scoop on Hawke, why would Hawke even be bothering to recite his whole adventure to Varric if he was just a contact?

The story spans over ten years. Could be they become friends during that tme, even if they arn`t companions. But I see your points of course. The crossbow bit being a very valid point as well.

Hmm... I would like to see Velanna again, in all epilouges it never specifically says she dies, but I also have a feeling that it could be Sketch from Leliana's Song (didn't a dev say around the time of it's announcment that one of the characters in there would play a role in the future?)

I'm totally up for returning Companions as Hawke's companions. They can totally be catty ****es talking sh*t about the Warden/other Companions from the past. It'd be brilliant.

I'm thinking the male mage will be somewhere between Harry Potter and Gandalf.

I'm hoping for more between David Copperfield and Richard Belzer. But that may be the allergy medication trying assert its dominance over the other voices.

A Tevinter mage would be nice. With an extensive knowledge of blood magic.

possibly a tevinter mage, either male or female might make for an interesting party mix dialogue, morals  and personality wise

Has anyone gone over how we are not limited to two of each class? Instead it's AT LEAST two?

I'm just taking shots in the dark here, but I think we might be getting two more mages as companions--one an elven lass (possibly Dalish) and a human male.

Now, with Neverwinter Nights 2 in mind for my following predictions: If Meg (mysterious elven guy) isn't of the warrior/what have you spec, then perhaps he's a Druid/Rogue who just so happens to have a wolf as his animal companion. That would be so neat.

At the moment, my gut is trying to convince me that the VA of a certain neck-snapping assassin with a leather fetish is going to provide the voice for Meg. Mind you, my gut also convinced me that Varric's VA was Robin Sachs, and we all know how that turned out. Image IPB

I'll just have to wait and see if any of my far-fetched 'dictions come true, and if most do, I'm so going to purchase a dozen or so lottery tickets next year. If I end up being as wrong as I was with Varric's VA, I'm retiring my gut feelings and moving to the midwest. Wisconsin, here I come! Image IPB

@ ACWolfe,
Your post was well written and everything, and I'm entirely behind Thane's VA returning, but is your Warden/Nathaniel wearing a Santa's hat? Smashing.
