So I finished ME1 for the first time recently, and went back to ME2 with an imported character. I normally play on veteran, although I have played on hardcore before. Even on hardcore I never used to die in ME2, but after playing ME1 for so long I've found that I tend to misuse cover, be reckless, never able to use powers due to universal cooldown and running around and dying a lot in general.

<_<

In ME1, the best strategy was to crouch, slowly approach an enemy after they had been sabotaged/overloaded/warped and take potshots at them. I find that this attitude towards the gameplay in ME2 can cause lots of frustration. Did anyone else initially have this problem, and if so how did they get over it? Feedback would be appreciated.

Hmm not really, tho I kept trying to use the wrong button to sprint or bring up the hud and had allot of trouble with Adept initially I got use to it fairly quickly.

I did however find it very hard to adapt back to ME1 again. Especially with my infiltrator. Dam I forgot how awful SR are in the beginning. Your better trying to hit a enemy in the distance with a pistol.

I'm playing both currently and I keep hitting E to interact with things in ME2 and hitting space bar to grab cover in ME1. Strategy wise though not much in the way of problems.

I freaked out the first time I played ME2.

"WHERE IS MY INVENTORY? WHY IS THE CAMERA SO CLOSE TO SHEPARD? WHY IS PRESSING E DOING NOTHING!?!!?!?!?!?"

This isn't the first time I've played ME2 either, it's the first time I've played since completing ME1. Which frustrates me even more. Controls/interface wise I seem to be fine though.

Sidenote: And I really miss the old leveling up system.

I have not experienced the problem that you are referring to. My only thought is to try storming into cover, as it will put you into it automatically. This might be easier than moving up to cover and then "using" it. I find storming to cover to be quite useful, provided I'm careful about pathing issues. As to powers, I actually find the global cool down in ME2 to be easier to work around than a 20 second cool down if I accidentally miss, like in ME1. My suggestion for higher difficulties in ME2 is to rely more on squad powers. Instead of trying to warp your own pulls on an Adept, use a sqaud mate to pull, and then throw your warp, for example.

As a side note, you might get better feedback if you have a specific class that you are trying to adapt to.

Edit: Another thought, if you do not have a specific class, is to give a Shotgun Sentinel a try. They are much more forgiving when it comes to storming the battlefield than, say, an Adept or Engineer. Just remember to put your tech armor up before you get into a skirmish, so your powers are off cool down when the fighting starts.

Got to say I am not a fan of the cover system in ME2 or the global cool downs. I enjoyed the Adept in ME1... that doesn't mean the Adept is useless in ME2, it isn't. However, the Adept in ME2 just isn't as much fun (for me) and shields are like tissue paper in ME2, almost pointless. The thing I missed the most from ME 1 to 2 was the overly simplified skill system and glaring lack lustre build options (I miss my Singularity from ME1, having to usie it as a block to set up spam warp bombs (in ME2) just is not interesting, visually bland. Yea, it took me a while to adapt, in a way I still don't think I have, I loathe having to use cover.

Exactly this, plus Space is now Shift and Shift is now Space.  That screwed me up a lot, too.

I bumbled my way though Gears of War prior to cutting my teeth on the ME series. In ME as a Shock Trooper I never used cover really (I actually ignored the mini tutorial in ME the very first time).

Then when I started ME2, it was not that much of shock, I actually liked how important it was to cover, it made combat feel more realistic.

As to the transition, one word: Patience.
With ME2 you are forced to account for enemy actions. But once you figure them out (like when to pop out of cover or find a new spot) the game gets much easier, even on Insanity.

If you are really struggling check out some video's of combat on youtube, I know they've helped me, like watching Sinosleep for example.

Good luck and happy hunting

i agree. in ME2 i feel like "entering cover" is the same thing as "entering combat." whenever i see an enemy the first thing i think is "find a wall and hit A." cover should be much more easy to use. id start by adding crouching, i dont know why crouching isnt in a 3rd person shooter. i dont think cover should be entered or exited by pressing a button. to pull from another game, army of 2 is set up great. its similar to ME1s auto cover, but isnt as sticky.

I used cover even in ME1 as often as possible (it just looks cool), when I got ME2 the controls screwed with me at first but got better. Now its almost perfect (practice makes perfect), I just hate having to take cover every time I want to vault over an object, it bloody annoying and slows down the pace. As for the inventory I would never expect to say this but I'm glad it's gone, it was just too damn cluttered. The global cooldown is also great since you don't have to wait like 60 seconds before you can throw someone off a ledge again. For me ME2 was a great improvement, I was just unhappy that you can only have 2 outfits per squadmate rather than having tons of armour to choose from through the inventory.

I like this human! He understands!

To be honest, I adapted to ME2's gameplay very quickly and only got ME1's gameplay at Virmire. It comes with years of playing Gears of War.

As I bounce between ME1 and ME2 a lot, I tried to map my keys so that the controls were relatively the same. The only problem I really have is the "interact" button. In ME1, I wonder why Shep starts running away from the people I'm trying to talk to, and in ME2 I suddenly have Garrus throwing himself on top of the computer I'm trying to hack.

Gotta say, though, the global cooldowns are a blessing.
