That is what will clear all this up, and help sell the game too.

I'm happy to respect that opinion of you don't mind respecting the right of others to point out if and when that opinion is unreasonable and based on flawed logic and/or unsupported assumptions.TJPags wrote...
But I look at that gameplay trailer, and I see FemHawke practically transporting herself in different directions, swinging a two-handed sword like it's a wiffle ball bat, tossing enemies aside with each swing, taking out 3 and 4 people at a time, jumping up for an over-the-head chop that takes people down, with the shock wave of her landing knocking more people down, and, well, I think hack and slash - the kind of hack and slash that I don't personally care for.
Now, fine, that's supposed to be from the exagerated part of the combat, I understand, before Cassandra calls Varric out on it. But I've yet to see the non-exagerated part, so it's all I have to go on.
You may like what that shows, and I respect your right to that opinion. I don't like it, and all I ask from you is that you respect my right to that opinion.
I don't like the exaggerated combat either, but rather than using it to support a dislike of other things of which I'm as yet unaware, I would say "I don't like that bit" and just that bit. Which is, I understand what you are doing right there, but is not what many people are doing when they say they do not like the look of the combat.
Much of it might simply be a language problem in that people aren't qualifying statements by adding "that we've seen" or similar to points, but I think they should expect pedantry when that's the case.

Heh, despite the fact people will scream "OMG FABLE 2" - this is not my intent - I wouldn't mind the introduction of firearms into the world of Thedas. Large siege cannons, small arms, doesn't matter. Early firearms were fairly limited in utility, but would still add a potentially interesting dynamic.

Matchlocks and maybe Whellocks would actually work.
Though they probably shouldn't be player weapons, considering that such weapons took an obscene amount of time to reload (around a full minute), and had horrendous accuracy at range. While a whellock pistol would make one hell of an opener in a close quarter fight, 1 shot is all you realistically have.
Note that the flintlock was the mechanism that tipped the balance between firearms and older weapons decisively. While the sun was setting on the sword long before the invention of the flintlock, that was the final knife in its heart.

What?
Just as a little tidbit, I once made a D&D setting with fairly realistic early firearms. Que the group's munchkin hording wheellock pistols to get as many shots off as possible. I actually had to have the ruler of the land declare a ban on whellock guns, brought on by the use of one in an apparent assassination...

I'd imagine that early firearms would work just like bows, so i wouldnt have a problem with it. Not sure where the cool interesting abilities would come from though

yes they have gunpowder, they're adept at making bombs and they do have cannons.
it is unknown as of now if small firearms exist though.

While that would be interesting my understanding is that they are limited to field pieces (think artillary) and naval cannons.

Arquebuses are also another exciting early example. Also scary firepower but inaccurate and cumbersome weapons (braced against the centre of the torso).

They could have handcannons and hand-gonnes. Those things are absolutely devastating and suitable for early gunpowder weapons. Takes minutes to load, cumbersome to fire (either you light a fuse or put a firestick to the burnhole), held over the shoulder and grossly inaccurate. But hits with a force greater than many modern firearms. Sadly you virtually never see them in any media (despite being the primary gunpowder weapon for over 100 years).

Read that as hand-gnomes at first, and I was like, dude, that would be awesome! Flying exploding gnomes of death

Really? I must have forgotten to describe twitch mechanics and having to aim. Conceptually, there's no reason why firearms should work much differently than bows and crossbows in a cRPG.
Edit: Noticed your Reeses comment, heh, nevermind then.
In terms of cool abilities, it depends on how limited and archaic the weapon systems are. The sustained abilities would be pretty easily to duplicate (Aim, Rapid Shot, Suppressing Fire, Defensive Fire - all still make sense) as do the passive abilities (like Melee Archer and Master Archer) but the active abilities would be tough to come up with. They'd probably have to do with aiming at and hitting certain body parts. Like "Headshot" or "Kneecap." If it's a rifle or musket, a melee attack with the butt or a bayonet (or just use it as a club) would also work.

Yes, actually having your party do what you tell them without standing in place for what seems like an eternity, then casually shuffle over to a target who has already jogged past them is by definition more "responsive."
