To mod, or not to mod? How do you decide? And when?

The Universal Dye Kit, on the other hand, is great fun. In my games, everyone gets 'test pattern armour' for at least one adventure.

Yes, I use them. A lot of them. Its not something I thougt about before playing or even on my first play through. DA was probably my first 'proper' rpg that had mods available. I found out about them on the forums (the Alistair gush thread if memory serves me).
Initially I hunted down mods to fix things that annoy me about the game.
From memory my first mod was the respec mod. I found those origin based pre assigned skill points really annoying ;-) After that cosmetic mods for char creation (see my avatar for instance). The whiter teeth one is a favourite as well. I use Improved Atmosphere (without char changes), oh lots I'm sure I'm forgetting.
Then I discovered the toolset...mmm... toolset.
Mods and the toolset extended my enjoyment of the game. Tweaking and playing with appearances, difficulty levels and dialogue (ooh I forgot the dialogue tweaks mods - best of the lot imho) - its all great fun.
Pretty much this I had first rented DA on the PS3 and then beat it on the PC before even thinking about mods now I use fixes for the crossbow and bugs, difficulty adding mods, and new spells like necromancer spells animate dead stunk big time it should have been like the guy you chase around in RTO's spell (which is what I though animate dead was because I used a rogue and then a warrior...).
Most of the mod armors are overpowered and warp your NPC characters into an abomination like form at a distance.

My mods now replace all the faces, and environment textures to beautify them. Take off the ugle yellow rings, fix the combat abilities and other bugfixes. I also like the extended sex scenes because I am an adult and it is refreshing to see something that is a little more racy than pg-13 in video games. Now its my favorite fantasy rpg on the PC. I couldn't even think about playing this game without mods.
Unlike most people I don't play through games the first time before modding them. I can usually tell everything that is wrong within the first 2 hours of gameplay on a 60 hour game and leave it to people that actually have the time to play through flawed games to fix them.
