Try this...try that, run another search, read another thread where the same questions are asked a hundred times over in the span of the past YEAR. So, what's a girl gotta do to simply have a decent avatar??
I've tried all the tricks, but alas, character portraits don't even upload for me anymore. I get the character stats...just no pic. I'm sure the problem lies in the number of files still lingering in my storage--tried the trick to delete those..didn't work. So, after months of struggling on and off with this problem (yes, I'm THAT obsessed with having a pretty picture on a forum I rarely post at), I decide to just say F* it and concede to use one of the portraits/avatars provided by the forum. One problem: They are some of the most craptastic avatars I've ever seen. I'm speaking of the Dragon Age ones primarily (though the others kinda-sorta suck too...srsly, what's with the chicken?). For all the Dragon Age players registered on this site, we get shoddy screencaptures as user portraits and, the best part, not one of them is of a companion. Duncan and Loghain are the only respectable choices found there, and the rest are laughable considering the limited time we see them in-game. I mean really...Cautherin, two unidentifiable males, and....JORY? lol
If no fix (or administrative help) is available for the ongoing character upload problems, can we at least get some better default avatars uploaded into the system? I would seriously be willing to make them (adhering to all dimension and file size limitations) if whoever can approve of such a thing would just do so. I have several Alistair (and Cullen & Teagan) ones in my deviantart gallery. I can easily add some Morrigan, Zevran, Leiliana, Sten, Oghren, Wynne, and even Dog to the mix. Or not. Whatever.
Sorry if I was totally ranting there. I just want a pretty avatar too, dang it. XD
OMG...I would literally PAY for a decent avatar >_<

And some people find pretentious, irrelevant replies to questions pertaining to ongoing problems and annoyances with this site rather tiresome.
Is it the end of the world? Um...no, but months of trying to just get an avatar can be frustrating. There are numerous people who have been ready to pull their hair out over the problems with not having an avatar to their liking. You may not care about the subject, but it doesn't mean others don't or can't. *shrug*

the character portrait trick is not reliable but it does work. Just try again and again until the Dragon Age server reads it

Yeah, I've tried it again today for quite possibly the hundreth time over the past few months--still nothing. It obviously hates me. lol Thanks for your reply though, Mecha. Maybe someday the powers-that-be will break down and give us some better avatars. Or maybe with the release of DA 2, I'll finally get a new one via new player profile data. lol

You appear to have no characters uploaded at all. Are you not able to or have you simply deleted whatever did upload?

I deleted everything during my last attempt earlier. What usually happens when I upload a new character is that I get everything but the character portrait. All the stats, levels, etc. are fine. Just no pic.

I've never seen selective uploading. Does the big picture upload as well? I'm assuming this also goes for portraits created by the game, not just custom ones. What does your diagnostics page look like right now?

I don't know what the heck I did...but I has avatar! lol Weird how it chose NOW to finally work. I guess it needed to be done one hundred and *one* times. Or the avatar gods took pity on me. Either way I'm not messing with the diagnostics crap anymore. hoorah! Maybe I won't get sick of Bann Teagan. lol
