Personally, I think the Templar is the best tanking class, I understand that the reavers abilities increase it's aggro, but a tanks worst enemy is a mage in this game and to be able to defend against that is obviously mighty handy. Plus if his health gets low, he can use his smite to knock enemies back while you or your healer gets off a quick heal. I had allistair as a support tank for the entire game and Shale as my main, towards the end however, allistair was pulling more aggro than Shale, even though shale was 100% tank spec and is apparently supposed to draw more aggro that way. Ultimately, if you yourself are going to be the tank, you can be any spec and be an effective tank so long as you have taunt, know who to kill first on the battlefield and protect your mages.

The trouble is that the only Templar ability that's really "anti-magic" is dispel. Holy Smite works equally well on everything, because as far as I can tell the mana destroying part doesn't do diddily. They're both on long cooldowns and they're both stamina hogs.

I think you're missing the point. Templar on the whole provides more anti-magic utility than any of the other warrior specializations. It's certainly not the only way to play, but it enhances the basic warrior spec in a way that's very useful for tanking.

The value of the spec will depend largely on your group composition and the capabilities of your other party members. Nobody is saying it's the only way to go but let's not forget the OP asked which is "better" for a defensive warrior.

Reaver might be useful for tanking, but looking at the skills I'd rather select it for someone I intend to use as a damage-dealer, not a damage-soaker, since their abilities flirt with low health situations and affect regen rates. Two things you don't want as a tank are to be low on health and low on stamina. In my experience, of course.

What about Reaver as DPS build? It seems like it has good possibilities, in my mind. Using Alistair as the main tank, a Reaver as an off-tank DPS slot seems like it would work. I hope it works, cause, that is what I am trying to do!

It's possible to acquire Templar much earlier in the story, if that's a consideration at all.

I've not specialized yet.  The only one I've unlocked is Templar (manual from party camp merchant).  So far I've kept the spec point, and I'm about to hit level 10.  Do I waste that spec point on Templar or hope to unlock one of the others soon?

You can just grab templar for the flat bonuses it applies and not put any points into the templar talents themselves.

I never even used the Templar talents more than once, there is no point to it when mages and rogues can one shot enemy mages, even then those talents would be something you would want to use offensively, there is no benefit for a tank having them.. Not to mention how scarce enemy casters are in the first place.

Reaver isn't a bad idea for a tank because there's some health regen abilities and what not but definitely go Champion if you're gonna tank as War Cry debuffs all nearby enemies. Beserker is better suited to a damage dealer and Templar is rarely useful. (Especially since a party member already has it by default)

Lol, reaver is so useless once you have 45 str and ANY considerate tier6/7 weapon. After that, melee mobs are a joke, and your only weakness will be magic. Templar has mana damage, mental resistance, AND a huge aoe /stun/ mana burn, AND access to some gnarly Templar only gear, where as I see none for reavers.

Champion has a pretty aoe buff and a debuff/knockdown once you finish all of it, I use that as well.

What pisses me off is both berserk and the champion buff are both combat activated, and once you're out of combat they tick off, and you have to wait the cooldown again.

A no brainer to me.

I use Reaver combined with Berserker for my 2 Handed great weapon wielding warrior.

Most battles started with me activating berserker, Activating blood fury, then activating the reaver stuff and just cleaning house using the Starmetal Greatsword (swapped out for Yusaris when fighting dragons). Very dangerous build, because if you over extend you can die easily, but if you keep a close eye on your health you can cut through droves of enemies very quickly.
