Are you kidding me? I really hope so. It was the only way to get Sten to like me.

Sten is the easiest companion to earn approval for without spamming gifts.

Sten just didn't like me :/ I had so much trouble with him.

You can look up which lines will give you the most approval points if you want.

That might have been easier then scowering Ferelden for wine and shiny gold bars.

Saves time and effort!  Though it was amusing imagining my Warden presenting Sten with an exquisite painting in midst of all our glorious adventuring.

With the new rivalry system I predict b*tch slaps will replace gifts.

It would be nice if the companions occasionally **** slapped Hawke. Also, more roses.

are people REALLY arguing about optional stuff? Seriously?

It doesn't matter if it is optional. If it is in the game it should make sense. It is a difference with the gifts-DLC. What would be next? Quests that don't make any sense whatsoever but we can't complain because they are optional?

Well that's what I think in general, I didn't think the gifts in DA:O were that hilarious though. I even fail to see where the 'murder their husband/wife' thing comes from. Branka? Well she had it comming. She was a murdering lunatic. If I had to kill Oghren with her I'd do it in the blink of an eye.

I think the gifts thing is a bit silly though because frankly, the protagonist isn't Santa. So there is no reason to go around and give everyone gifts in regular intervals. It feels a bit like 'buying friendship'. I wouldn't do that irl so why in a game?

There is another point which is sort of equally wrong as giving gifts. If I think for example about Redcliff. I kept switching companions for different conversations to maximize positive (minimize negative) approval. I think in my first playthrough already I went through Redcliffe being the nice guy with Morrigan in the party and I think I collected about -20 approval. So what did I do? Loaded save game and did it again leaving Morrigan out of conversations that would make her upset. Is this a way a game is supposed to be played? I think not.

But to the defense of Bioware I have to say, they are not the worst. Could be an Obsidian/Bethesda game which totally screws companions so you never really feel like having any along at any time.

I really dislike the "it's optional" excuse, I'm sorry. Why should a player put limitations on themselves for the sake of not breaking the game / making it trivial?

Really, Dave?

Sure, if you give a monkey a gun, it's probably unreasonable to blame the monkey when he shoots people.

But you are not a monkey.

lol.
