In DAO we had some interesting villians, but they were all the same in the fact they were paranoid. Loghain, Marjolaine, etc.  It would be nice to see a villian that's not out for personal gain, but just to make Hawkes life miserable.  What everyone think?

I don't think the Joker exists just to make Batman's life miserable. In setting, that is.

I would find an antagonist who simply wants to see Hawke suffer... shallow.

The only reason why The Joker can exist is because Batman (decidedly) cannot kill him. I doubt Hawke would have a similar problem.

Exactly, the Joker created inner conflict in Batman, something that was lacked in DAO (not complaining).

I would actually prefer a Joker like companion, in the sense of a companion who creates inner conflict in Hawke and act as somesort of a rival, but at the same time they end up completing each other.

There would be excellent sex as well....*ponders about Harley Quinn*

I'd like a rival that was more personal than most villians in games, I want the villain to show up fairly regularly & screw Hawke over every time. But not from afar, safely laughing, I'd like them up close & personally responsible.

The Joker is an incredibly one-dimensional character, regardless of how stylishly he's been presented recently.

I'd much rather a villain actually have some objective that makes sense, as opposed to being malicious for no reason.

Psychosis is a pretty interesting thing, but I fear it has no place in my villians or companions.

I'd rather have my villain kick ass one dimensionally than to suck two - three dimensionally.

I think that villain has been announced. As Arvid, the Tap-Dancing Squirrel.

Setting out to make a Joker-esque villain just to have a Joker-esque villain would almost certainly end up lousy. Characters have to come naturally to the story, not the other way around. Besides, the Joker has been presented in many ways. He was originally a goofy prankster who stole stuff and robbed places for the monetary gain. It wasn't until writers like Alan Moore got their hands on him that he became a psychopath with no motive except to inflict pain and suffering. Sure, that makes for a scary villain, but not necessarily a satisfying story.

How would you create an inner conflict in a non-defined PC?

Kefka was awesome! Atleast the first half of the game, he lost something after that.
