As someone else pointed out, good villians grow organically out of the story and their connection to the protagonist. The simple response to asking for a Joker-type villian would simply be, "If it works, then yes."

But simple responses can be boring...

Villians who simply represent chaos can be immensely interesting, and I loved the Dark Knight's Joker for filling that role. I think their strength comes not from spreading suffering, per se, but in convincing people that life offers no lasting structure or joy. What makes them so damn amazing is they can be effective by simply being brutally honest and intellectually consistent.

Pulling this off in DA2 would require more than just a villian that is depressing or cruel. It would require a villian that actually understands moral behavior very well, and extrapolates from the player's actions the kind of world they're creating, and argues it merely repackages and does not reduce suffering.

Such a villian can't really work without knowing the hero he faces, so, again, the story has to dictate whether we fight such a foe.

Since it is a rpg, Kefka would be the proper example, not the Joker, normaly i'd say no to this however, buuuuuuuuuuuut Bioware could proberly make an excellent Kefka esc villian

Yeah, I really hope Dragon Age starts to rip it's characters and ideas from superhero comics too, it will really help with that "gritty realism" feeling they are going for with the teleporting ninjas and stuff.

Fantasy joker has been done. His name is Kefka. (okay, they aren't exactly the same.)
