For some reason I enjoy naming my characters after famous characters. most of my Wardens were named after famous Romans, I named my current Shepard, Horatio.  Anyone name their Shepards after historical people?

Looking at my Shepards I seem to only have one who is named after a specific historical person and that is my femShep Chiyome Shepard who is named after Mochizuki Chiyome a Japanese noblewoman of the 16th century who is famous for creating an all-female group of ninja.

While so far I've only done three playthroughs of ME1, none of which was named after a notable historical personage, I have a number of planned playthroughs where Shepard is named after either Roman emperors, Christian saints, or famous Renaissance artists:

Augustus Shepard - Soldier (after the Augustus, first emperor of Rome)

Trajan Shepard - Engineer (after Trajan, possibly the greatest Roman emperor)

Constantine Shepard - Adept (after Rome's first Christian emperor, and an Eastern Orthodox saint)

Giotto Shepard - Sentinel (after Giotto di Bondone, the first true Renaissance artist)

Donatella Shepard - Adept (feminine version of Donatello, Renaissance sculptor)

Domenico Shepard - Engineer (after Domenico Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo's first master)

Andrea Shepard - Soldier (after Andrea Mantegna and Andrea del Verrocchio)

Catherine Shepard - Vanguard (after St. Catherine of Siena)

Sebastian Shepard - Infiltrator (after St. Sebastian)

Gregory Shepard - Infiltrator (after St. Gregory the Great)

Yeah, I plan to be playing this game for a while yet. :)

Daniel Shepard - After Daniel the Biblical figure, for two reasons.

It is from Daniel's exploits that we get the idiom "to read the writing on the wall", meaning to foresee a coming calamity. Much as Shepard does with regards to the coming Reapers.

Daniel also means "G_D is my judge" which is appropriate for Shepard, given some of the decisions he has to make.

I had one called Jeanne Shepard - after Jeanne d'Arc, who I think is one of the most inspiring persons in history. Sad to say that I haven't used a lot of historical names with a fitting history behind it. I've mostly re-used two other names that I just thought suited Shepard.

More like fictional. Trying to get them to resemble them or at least match their description if he/she is a character from a novel

No I don't.

In fact, I keep the default name for male Sheps (I don't have custom male Sheps). I use Tiia for femShep, because it starts with T and it is a Finnish name.

Like many of you, I also name my characters after historical figures or at least mythical ones. However, it's not to pay homage...it's just easier to identify their characteristics, since we can't put write a description for each playthrough. Like this:

Joan - like Didiware, after Jeanne d'Arc, this is my War Hero Paragon (she's a saint to her troops)

Jove - after Zeus/Jupiter, my mixed alignment Adept (as biotics are similar to mythical powers)

Juno - after the goddess a.k.a. Hera, a Renegade Vanguard

But perfect choice on Horatio there, very Master and Commander of you. Totally fitting for ME. And I'm curious about HotWings, sounds like there's a fun story there.

However, for sheer creativity, I think Renaissance artist names are even more ideal, particularly for how I use names sheerly as descriptions. To wit:

Leonardo - Soldier or Sentinel, Paragon

Raphael - Renegade Vanguard

Donatello - Engineer

Michaelangelo - is a party dude!

Chorus - Teen-age Mu-tant Nin-ja Turrr-tles...Teen-age Mu-tant Nin-ja Turrr-tles...

I named my Shep after myself, Joshua. Of course in turn I was named after the Joshua from the bible. I find it rather suiting though since in the bible, Moses passed the torch to Joshua as leader of the Israelites.David Anderson did the same towards my Shep in the first game. ^_^

Never once. I name all my characters - as this is not exclusive to Shepard - generally after names that have entered into circulation for a potential child names in the long distant future. Of course this is not always the case, and merely a name I happen to fancy. The exception is when culture would recommend a less modernized North American name, such as Jade Empire.

Thus far, my two Shepards are Dawson and Selene respectively. Alexis and Cassandra will appear relatively soon more than likely.

Some people have, on various occassions, started a new playthrough on only three hours of sleep and a full liter of diet Pepsi Max.  On these occasions, we have made mistakes we cannot correct and must live with the consequences.

Sometimes, I consider starting a new save with a nice, respectable name. [Insert witty stealth pun here.]

But I am proud of HotWings Shepard, and I shall not flee before petty insults.

I may claim that my John Shepard is called after some historical characters, but...
Two Shepards which were called after someone is Alyson (after Allison Cameron from House M.D. - I didn't want to call main character Lisa, wanted something longer, and there weren't so many women that times. Misheard name a bit) and Ashley (really, should I explain after who?).

My shepard is pjeter shepard because pjeter is my name, and because there's probably no one else who named their shepard that.

Gideon might be a good one, the ancient Judge, who led a small force against a mighty army, and won.

For FemSheps, I think Cassandra's a great name. The Greek seeress, doomed know the future, and to have her claims dismissed.

I once debated the name of a Spartan king who was really saucy.

When King Philip the 2nd of Macedon (Alexander the Great's dad and total badass taking over the Aegean) was on his doorstep Sparta only had 300 soldiers. Philip commanded a force that would end up taking over Persia and some of the greatest civilizations ever.

Philip sent a messenger who relayed the message:

"You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city."

The Spartan King returned a message swiftly. When Philip read the letter it only said:

"If."

And Philip never invaded.
