NWMax works decently with 3ds Max 2011 as I use it to touch up models, but there are a few odd issues.
You'll have to download NWNExplorer and the NWMax plugin. You can find the male human base model under "HotU Patch Data" -> "Models" -> "a_ba.mdl". Right click and Export it to somewhere you'll remember.
For NWMax, you'll have to put it into the Scripts folder, which is normally under "C:/Program Files/Autodesk/3ds Max 2011/Scripts". You should also put the "autonwmax.ms" file under the "C:/Program Files/Autodesk/3ds Max 2011/Startup" folder, if there is one!
After that, start up 3ds Max and, in the NWMax window, you want to expand the "MDL Loading" tab. Click Browse and find the a_ba.mdl model, and then click "Import".

Probably the version tagged for Max versions 6 through 8.

Does the entire folder of Nwmax go into scripts?
autonwmax // is currently in startup
Yet i dont see it starting up with 3dsmax so i guess theres not a script running.

I don't know the directory structure of Max 2011 so I'm guessing.
If you point the installer to a dummy directory it will extract the files into a 3dsMax6 directory inside that dummy directory. Inside that 3dsMax6 directory you should see two directories -- NWmax and startup. Copy both of these directories to your 2011 install directory, not the My Documents directory, that's how I did it for Max 9 and it worked.
[edit] Copy both directories to your [2011 install]/Scripts directory [/edit]

Yep, the entire folder goes there and the autonwmax file goes to scripts\\startup as you said.
