I've seen the viper vs mattock thread, but in truth...I really love that the mantis's one hit and drop idea... like how a sniper rifle should feel..... I can't remember the ammo count off hand, but it can't be that bad....

I don't have the incisor, so its my only option either that or the viper....

Sniper Rifles can only be used as a Vanguard if you choose Sniper Rifle Training at the Collector Ship Mission.

Afterwards, you can in fact use the Mantis Sniper Rifle, at the cost of losing the chance to use the Claymore Heavy Shotgun, Assault Rifle training, or whatever other Sniper Rifle you have, obviously.

By the way, the Incisor is a horrible sniper rifle for Shepard. It is best used by squadmates since they have unlimited ammunition and better accuracy.

So for you, stick to the Mantis, if its what you prefer, or the Viper.

Mantis is pointless. No 1S1K like the Widow and Viper is much better against armor and kills faster too. (unless you play on low difficulty).

on casual a Viper headshot will probably kill most enemies, but try the Mantis as well. Once you pick up sniper rifle training then you can swap back and forth before missions to give them both a try

Oh yeah I forgot about that.....

there's no real "wrong" way for the bonus weapon is there? I looove my claymore, but I noticed the vanguard has no long range weapons....

that would be charge.
even with a 40m range, you can charge enemies all the way across the battlefield -- although it may not be very healthy at times...

There's no wrong way to play any class, since Mass Effect 2 is a single player game. The way you play will only affect you. So, if you feel like taking sniper rifle  training and using the Mantis, I say more power to you! :)

Casual difficulty means that any Heavy Charge into enemies is a safe bet.
I'd actually advise to ramp the difficulty up a bit to Veteran and once you beat it to at least Hardcore. Insanity is ones own choice (though if you beat Hardcore, Insanity just involves more ducking as nothing other changes than enemies damage, accuracy and defences/health and therefore is not really any harder, just longer). Most powers only start being truly distictive on Hardcore and the Engineer class on Casual is almost completely useless in its usual field of expertise (Defence stripping) as almost no enemy other than Boss-Level ones have any defence at all.

As for the original question, if you choose Sniper Rifle Training, of course you can use the Mantis, but as already written, on Casual the actually relative firepower is neglectable as opposed to the enormous ammunition count the viper has, making the choice rather odd.
The real difference in firepower just starts showing itself on Veteran.

Mantis is not worth the trouble for a Vanguard. If you want to go SR to round out your guns, the Viper is a much much better choice. It's much more user friendly, with more ammo and firepower.

_ the Viper you can get in the assassin recruiting mission -- at Dantius Towers

_ the Window is off-limits unless you're an infiltrator

_ the Incisor comes with the Digital Deluxe Edition and also as part of the Aegis Pack DLC (no point in buying for the SR though, the Viper is superior -- just my opinion)

I actually liked running around with the Mantis. I mainly used it on enemies I couldn't Charge. There are enemies placed in areas that are inaccessible to Shepard, and a lot of the time, the location is at a longer range. The Mantis allows you to deal with them, and the low ammo count means you can't sit there and snipe the entire fight; you'll actually have to put the weapon away and start using Charge again once you can actually reach the enemy. That, however, is entirely a play-style issue.

true -- forgot about the soldier (reminds me I started a soldier playthrough a while back and still haven't managed to wrap it up...)
