I thought Bioware was making an inventive new world, when I rotated the map upside-down.

How do they stay on the ground?

Also, the coast between Antiva and Rivain looks like a dog biting the land.

I noticed it as well. I thought it was pretty clever, actually! Maps are a lot of work. I have more than once taken a randomly generated pangea map from Civilization and used it for table-top RPGs.

Thankfully, so far their nation analogues are interesting and not too straightforward or on the nose.

I don't know... Orlais is east, they sound russian. Antiva sound's french, rivain is probly spanish, Tevinter imperium is obviously rome/italy.

If nevarra is german, and the anderfels are turkish / ottoman, then it would be.

Orlais is France, Tevinter Imperium is Byzantium (Eastern Roman Empire), Antiva is Spain/Italy, Rivain is Moorish Spain. That's in order of how sure I am that is their real world equivalent, if they even have one.

The Qunari represent the Ottoman Empire and/or Golden Horde to the rest of Thedas' Europe.  That much is certain, as well.

Wow! Thats kind of uncanny now you put in that perspective!

Especially since Fereldan is supposed to represent medeval England and Antiva Spain. Its almost a perfect match. The only location out of place is French speaking Orlais, but I guess we will see the accent of the Free Marches soon.

Fantasy games usually focus on only one continent which is almost always based on Europe

Every fantasy setting represents our history and world in some way.

Both very true statements.

But  you really expect to see the map of Thedas look so similar to Europe when presented up-side-down?

I actually kept thinking Europe to myself throughout Origins and Awakening, although not from the map.

It doesn't really look like Europe at all. I mean if you're running from memory it does, but place it next to a map of europe and only two parts look similar.

Uh, you sure about that?

Looks like a unicorn with a droopy fat horn and an extendable nose to me. One who's about to derpily eat Seheron.

I can see Ferelden being in roughly the right spot, and possibly Antiva/Rivain being approximately where one would expect to find Spain. But Orlais is French and the Anderfels is German and... well, I'm not sure what you think this proves. If you're suggesting that physically Thedas is an upside-down Europe that's... quite a stretch, to say the least.

Of course it is not a exact copy of Europe. But the parallels are heavy.

Just compare

Rivain - Iberian Peninsula
Ferelden - Great Britain + Scandinavia (without water inbetween :D - also notice climatic parallels)
Waking Sea - English Channel + Baltic Sea
Mountains next to Orlais - The Urals
Nahashin Marshes - Seas of Finland (just pulled South a little ;))
Free Marches, Tevinter, Nevarra, etc. - Whole Central + Eastern Europe
The Hundred Pillars - The Alps (with a little fantasy :))
Boeric Ocean + Seas - Mediterranean Sea
Seheron, Anderfels - Italy, Greece, Balkan (although Anderfels culturally fits Germany)
Par Vollen - Northern Africa (both exotic from European/Thedas standpoint)

You may have also noticed that the current map of Thedas has similar borderlines like Europe.

North of Anderfels - Middle East
South of Ferelden - End of European land
North of Seheron/Par Vollen - Africa
Mountains next to Orlais - End of European area in the East / Beginning of Asia
Amaranthine Ocean - Atlantic Ocean

The geographical parallels don't fit the cultural setting of most of the nations (Anderfels - Germany, Orlais - France), but anyway, nice find!

Where's Scandinavia in Thedas?! I'm going to tell Paradox Interactive Bioware dissed them, and then they'll put sarcastic "free DLC" in their next patch as part of some good-natured ribbing!

They live on an as yet unknown island and will soon be seen killing/pillaging around the coasts of Ferelden.

I'm sorry, but this map looks nothing like Europe. I can kinda see how the seas look like the North Sea and the Mediterranean sea,but any comparion when it comes to landmass or position of nations stops there.

If you rotate it by 35.5 degrees clockwise more, turn down the lights and listen to Dark Side of the Moon it kind of looks like Whistler's Mother too.

As a European, I agree with David. :wizard:
