Quite simply, if I take my Origins character into the Witch Hunt DLC, once I've finished it, is it possible to import that character from Witch Hunt into Awakening? Or should I finish Awakening first and play Witch Hunt afterwards?

Not possible.

You can import in order:

Origins->Awakening->Golems of Amgarrak->Witch Hunt

I agree with Gr4ntus.  I don't believe you can do EITHER  of the below (I've tried.. Posted Image )

a)  Go through any module or expansion with an imported character who has already been through that one.

B)  Go through any module or expansion with an imported character who has already been through a later one (as defined by BioWare's "unofficially-official" chronology.)

So while I can take a PC named  "MyWarden" through in any order I want, the saves from which I can select that PC when I start will only include the versions of "MyWarden" that don't violate a) or B) above.

I was just about to ask wheither or not you could Import in the order (Origins ---> Golems ---> Awakening). Glad thats not a problem. I was worried as Awakening came out before Golems that there wouldnt have been the foresight or the update to correctly accommodate.

No.  The correct order is:  Origins > Awakening > Golems > Witch Hunt

The other poster who said he could load a Golems save into Awakening was mistaken.  Each of the DA games uses a different save file format.  Awakening came out BEFORE Golems so it is not able to recognize a Golems save file.  The other poster probably loaded an Origins save file without realizing it.

Zy-El is Right!  See three posts above.  You can import a PC named  the same as one which has completed a later module, (out of the series of saves for that PC) but NOT from a save CREATED  in that later game.
No going "back in time..." Posted Image

dont tell me what I can and cannot do, I wanted a high level character so I done golems after origins then i imported the same 1 to awkening then I done golems again with the same character, if you can't do that its your problem don't assume im wrong just because you can't do it

and of course it reconises it, what do you think patches are for? other wise golem dlc in game items would not appear in origins or awkening

The "bonus" items appear based on the coding assigned to them, which is totally independent of the characters and saves during which they were "unlocked."  If you have finished GoA, you will receive the "Golem's Might" items in your inventory as soon as you start new campaign of either DA:O or DA:A.  Same for the "Witchcraft" items from WH.

Oh, and I confirmed (again!) last night that one CANNOT import a Warden from a later DLC (GoA or WH) into DA:A.  The later (higher-level character) saves will just not appear in the list  from which you can choose to import at the start of the module.  (Use the "Advanced" option to see the entire list, rather than the default "most recently made" save for the particular character.)

Now if the player has hacked the ".das" files to edit (what I assume are) the entries indicating which modules created which saves, then it might  be possible.  But if the player is hacking the game, MANY  things that Should Not Be... Are! Posted Image

Would be nice if Bioware would have mentioned something about this in the DLC info; I have a char. 1/2way thru DA:A who I used for WH, but still haven't done GoA. I was already annoyed that I lost a level-up I earned in WH when I went back to Awakenings. No big deal, but this could have all been avoided with an alert or info post when you sign in to the servers...

You can't load a WH character save-file into Awakenings; the two DLC use different save file formats. Awakening only recognizes an Origins and Awakening save files; you probably loaded up your original Origins character thinking it was the WH save file - that's why it looked like you lost a level. Thandal has already confirmed this to be true.

Witch Hunt allows you load up a character from any of Origins, Awakening or Golems. You'll see your characters name up to 3 times in the load list, one for each previous DLC. It's a shame that they don't put the DLC name next to the character name to differentiate the character save files. You have to click on the top one in the list and hope it's the most current.

Or... you can select the "Advanced" button and see the exact name of the Save from which the PC will be imported, with the character's level and other info displayed right there on-screen.

Yup, used "Advanced" button, but now I know Awakening won't recognize my post-WH character because of the save file type. But that's OK- I didn't want to have to start Awakening over since I'm pretty far into it. I just leveled up my pre-WH character the way I did during WH; no harm, no foul. Thank you, noble and knowledgeable denizens of the DA Forums!

it's possible. but not normally.

start a new game(Awakening). select Load from other module. make sure your Origin character there.

then alt-tab

replace WH save with Origin's last save. in my case, Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\Characters\\Hero5\\Saves\\Slot_9(WH save) -> Hero\\Saves\\Slot_145(Origin save).

back to load screen. you cannot see your WH character at there and in Advanced. but it loads last save which you replaced.

so you can play Origin->GoA->WH->Awakening. as i'm doing.

so, to avoid problems later on, I should go for:

DA:O ---- DA:OA ----- GoA ------- WH

no?

This is "correct", as in "this is BioWare's official chronology-of-events, to the extent that they have/use one."

I've taken Wardens directly from DA:O  into all the later modules, no problem.  I've played others straight through from "Castle Cousland -to- Vigil's Keep -to- Amgarrak -to- The Eluvian".  I haven't tried the hack to use the same PC "out-of-order" because I don't see the point.
