Does the tool kit allow you to create your own party members? I know it allows you to create your own NPC's but I was wondering if I could create my own party members, cause if so that would be really awesome.

you are able to do this, however we strongly recommend great caution as it's possible to introduce game breaking errors by using the toolset and/or adding additional content

What do you mean?

the toolset works from an SQL database and uses the game resources for operation... modifying the core resources overrides them and can break the single player experience

So if this happens would removing the tool kit allow for the refreshing of the game, thus eliminating any problems created by it?

it does not... only way to fix it is to remove the offending content

Okay, so what your saying is that I would in essence have to delete the character I made and everything would return to normal?

sorry for so many questions but this is the first time in a long time that I have played anything other than a console game.

yep, if it breaks the game, you have to take it out, but a lot of people have managed to break the game just by playing around in the toolset

hmmm.... It seems that this tool kit may be more trouble than its worth... To which I hope is not the case...

David Gaider made a post in response to someone asking about creating new Origin stories. I suspect that, like the Origin stories, a brand new character would run into issues at the various points of the game where party members provide feedback. These situations could possibly not be robust enough to handle situations that are unexpected, since it wouldn't be necessary for the main game.

Large alterations to the single player game will pose the risk of the game not responding properly, possibly with game breaking consequences.

Thanks. So would it be safe to say that creating a custom NPC companion would be an issue mostly because it wouldn't be able to respond to situations as the game is expecting, thus leaving the player at a dead end? That's what it sounds like you're saying, at least.

But I suspect that modifying one of the existing NPC regarding their appearance, equipment, and possibly even their background -- provided that nothing else was modified -- would work. Not that I'm gonna try it, mind you.

Just my one problem with DAO was the number of characters, though the depth of each character was incredibly impressive It lacked variety in number and I just really really want to be able to create my own party members. Would it still have such a profound negative effect if they didn't interact in the story line and only spoke just to "you" like during camp interactions etc. etc.??? or if they just didn't speak at all?

I think using the toolset for anything in actual main campaign other than small mods, is very difficult from all I have read. I think it is much better served as a New Campaigns creator, things independent of the main story.

Okay would it be okay to create your own party members during the new campaigns creator. Because that is what I was planning on using mostly anyway because it seems to be alot less difficult. are both of these assumptions true or otherwise?

My question was slightly distorted allow me to rephrase.

Does the New Campaign editor allow the use of your own created teammates?

And

Does the New Campaign editor cause any problems as far as breaking the single player game?

Question 1 - Yes, you can create whole new adventures for all new characters, in pretty much any scenario you can think of that fits the game engine and mechanics.

Question 2 - It Shouldn't but right now there are issues with even messing with the toolset and building a simple MOD that can effect your campaign.  I would not advise with messing around in there until you're bored of the game (which could take some time!) :D

Yes, if something were to happen and it checked for a party member and all it got was a created one it wasn't expecting, something strange could happen depending on the scenario. (also, I completely forgot about the party picker...a new party member could very likely cause issues there). Modifying appearance and equipment should be safer, in that you wouldn't be tweaking the scripts or anything like that. I'd still make sure I was careful ;)

This should definitely be safer, and is probably more the intention of the toolset IMO (I liked making content in NWN). If you have issues with created party members in your own campaign, then I'd suggest checking out the toolset forum for help in that regard, as other people probably had similar experiences as they learn the system.

Thanks for the feedback though guys.

one more question... And this one may be a longshot... a longshot in the dark really... maybe more of an astronomical laser beam fifteen lightyears off course but anyway here it is.

Would it be impossible to.... lets say... make an ally that is either an... oh I don't know... like an ogre or dragon. perhaps??? I don't care if it has to be in the new campaign editor... I just want to know if its possible???

Hmmmm, if it's like the NWN Toolset, it "should" be yes. I could see it being possible, with Mabari hounds being both hostile creatures as well as party members. However, I couldn't definitively say yes or no. The Toolset forum might be able to help you out with that question.

interesting... however i cant post there because I have yet to get the PC version I've been playing the PS3 version. but I really want the tool kit so I'm getting the PC version within the week. I'm just getting prepared for when I do get it. Cause I'm going to work the crap out of that tool kit. I could make my friend with the PS3 version ****** his pants if I could make a dragon party member... That would be so awesome.

be aware that the content created in the PC toolset is not cross compatable with any other platform

affirmative.I was going to get the PS3 version but have decided on the PC version for the sole idea of the tool kit. I'm addicted to anything that allows an incredible amount of customization and that tool kit will consume a great deal of my life. I'm going to play on the PC as well as create things on the tool kit I have no plans of playing the PS3 version as I have already beaten it.
