ashley was religious. the three possible replies to this tell the story for me. one was like.. don't worry i don't judge, another was wow you're a freak, and the last one was like bizarrely enthusiastic. i imagine religion will have finally died out 150 or so years from now, so believing in like christianity is considered kind of insane, hence the omg-we're-in-the-same-freakish-cult enthusiastic response being the only way to say yes i'm religious. and ashley is the only one out of 14 total squad members to even mention religion, other than thane, whose "religion" is more like buddhist, which is more along the lines of a way of thinking than a religion

I think it is safe to assume that the religions of today are still around in the ME time frame with the addition of the new ones formed during the prologue of Revelation. As stated above, we know Ashley is religious from ME1. Also, Cerberus assassinated the Pope, so we Catholicism is still around in one form or another.

Please tell me that isn't true. I mean honestly...and I thought my opinion of Cerberus couldn't get any lower. *sighs*

It was for a perfectly good reason and it did help humanity.

The Christianity of the Mass Effect universe would be different from today's I'd imagine, any human-centric teachings would have probably gone out the window (eg. any beliefs that only humans have souls or can achieve salvation, unless you believe aliens don't have souls but humans do...), or only carry on through people that have rejected reality.

I actually kinda like Ashley not stating if she belongs to any particular religion though - I guess the real reason is that Bioware wants to dodge controversy, same reason why no-one asks Shepard what happens when you die, but hey you don't need to believe in a religion to believe in God after all, different paths to the same end and all that.

Ashley's belief seems to stem from wonder and amazement at the universe and how this cannot possibly exist due to mere chance rather than any religious teaching, more an emotional belief than something based on logic, though this is just my take on what little dialogue she has on the subject.

/end rambling post

Does she ever actually say God? For all we know she could be muslim or Jewish.

Yeah, she says something like, "I believe in God. You have a problem with that?" I mean, that could mean she's just a deist. It doesn't imply religion.

I think Bioware handled the topic of religion gracefully and in a realistic manner. Indeed, if scientists were to discover alien life within our galaxy, I imagine that there would be a great upheaval in religion because many religions preach the special nature of humans and our tiny planet. To find out that we are not so special would cause many to question their previous beliefs.
