I find the fight with the Praetorians on Horizon and Collector vessel quite hard on high difficulty setting, playing as soldier or vanguard. I rely much on the Collector Particle Beam (haven't tried another heavy weapon on this encounter).

Also, the geth colossus fight was a pretty hard one on my first encounter.

long time since I played ME 1 so only ME2:

5) Captain Enyala in Miranda's LM.
Me: "Shoot the drones! Shoot the drones!" EDI: "Your squad is dead, Shepard."
4) The two YMIRs in that Blue Sun hideout.
Me: "Take cover, you bloody idiots!" EDI: "Your squad is dead, Shepard."
3) Reaperbaby without heavy weapons, but with shotgun and pistol.
Me: "I''m out of ammo, now you start goddamn shooting for a change!" Squad: "-"
2) Tela Vasir without using Stasis. And I agree, it makes no goddamn sense.
Me: "Going for cigarette break again?"
1) Donovan Hock, as your first mission in a NG+, without heavy weapons.
Me: "This Loki-Mech is coming right at me, OVERLOAD OVERLOAD OVERLOAD Kasumi!" EDI: "Kasumi is dead, Shepard."

I suck at Insanity. But I try.

By 'horrible' do we mean bad or difficult?

On insanity or hardcore my only fear is the end of Horizon. It is by far the fight I get the most stressed out in. The other fights I employ a bit of tactics and patience and have no big issues.

The most enjoyable for me is the Colossus on Haelstrom. I give myself the added challenge of using the renegade option on Reeger so I am working against the clock to keep him alive. I usually make my approach carefully down the right flank until I shoot the Colossus from the side and have my team mates protect my left side against Geth flanking action. Once the Colossus is down to the appropriate health level I pull out the Cain to deliver the coup de grace

YMIRs don't scare me at all. They just need a bit of patience. Keep in mind though I always play as soldier (maleshep) or infiltrator (femshep) so maybe YMIRs are not too bad with those classes. With the Blue Sun Hideout and Garrus LM, I always headshot one YMIR so it causes a nuclear explosion and severely damages the other. It sounds weird but I am actually happy when my squadmates die against dual YMIRs because I don't have to worry about them ruining my technique.

Running against the clock?

He dies no matter what if you have him help. He is alive and ticking until I kill the last geth grunt and then he magically dies for no reason.

Pretty much any Praetorian fight is balls in my opinion. Mostly because it's random when they decide to recharge their barrier. You might not even get a hit in before they slam into the ground two seconds after you've removed the last one.

It doesn't help that in both fights you've got husks swarming you, forcing you out of cover so it can hit you with the rape beam.

It isn't random at all. They regen their barrier every 1/4 of their health, and any time they get close enough to damage you with the barrier regen shockwave. I have never seen them do it apart from those times.

Most horrible was definitely Benezia for sheer glitchiness.

Most frustrating for me was the YMIR ambush at the end of Garrus's mission, mostly because there is no way to prepare for it. As soon as the YMIRs spawn, your team is pulled out of cover and dropped on the lowest level, in clear shooting view for the heavy mechs. I don't like my teammates dying, especially when the only reason they happen is because they get teleported.

I cannot agree with that. In countless play throughs I have had him help and I killed the Geth and he survived. In lower difficulties it would take quite a bit of time for him to die but on insanity if I procrastinate behind cover for too long I can lose him. I see him say good bye to Tali when I take her and I see him later on in the conclave so I know he is alive.

Odd. I've only had him help once (and this is on normal) and he was alive after the colossus was destroyed. Once I finished off the last geth he was dead.

I have no problem with him if I'm a biotic and I have Kaidan or Wrex on my squad.

Saren as a Zombie in Mass Effect 1

And the Human Reaper in Mass Effect 2

Sorry I love Mass Effect 1 and 2 but their last boss fights suck! Saren as a Zombie? Come on... not to mention its an horribly easy fight with Biotics, and the Human Reaper fight made me feel like I was fighting the Terminator, I was expecting the Terminator theme to pop up when I started fighting it...

Whats with all the hate on the Benezia fight? I thought it was easy, never died once during it
Honestly all of the ME boss fights are generally pretty easy

I am a 'fun times' gamer... But I am so glad to see I am not the only one with trouble on this one. ME1 low level Therum was the mission in ME1 I died most on. I had to turn it off and come back the next day I because kept drying and getting mad. Only low level though, I did Therum last once and was WTF this is cake.

ME2, well, Praetorians are just... mean. Why me, why not my squad? So not fair, same thing, died over and over until I came back the next day and finally beat it. Until I learned the cover tricks for the 2 fights I loathed those fights. This does not account for Cain usage... I never seem to have enough ammo for it though.

Not bosses but YMIR mechs. They freak me the hell out, I'm like Oh shi... where do I hide, I need COVER now. Arrival's YMIR during the Rho fight was... a nightmare.

Heavy mechs, especially on higher difficulty. You get caught in the open for a few seconds, you're dead.

Also, if you bring the "wrong" heavy weapon for the Colossus fight on Haestrom, it can really, really suck. I thought I'd be all cool, go running in with the Cain. Fire it off and drill the Colossus right between the eyes- down to half armor. Sweet- OH CRAP IT'S REPAIRING ITSELF RIGHT AWAY. I really don't ever want to have to fight that thing with pistols and SMG's ever again, let me tell you.

Human Reaper wins hands down. Moves too much and too fast, nearly impossible to hit with powers and drags on way too long especially if you don't use the Cain. I didn't find it fun or challenging.

If we mean the good type of horrible, the husk + scion fight in the biotic bubble gave me lots of trouble until I got the hang of it. But at least the learning process was fun!

I'm a glutton for punishment. I play on insanity ever since it unlocked. I never had a prob with anything in ME1. ME2 however...Even after 4 series playthroughs (currently started 5th @ME1) when I reach ME2 I dread facing the collectors / Harbinger on those damn platforms. The other bosses are not that bad for me. I have the hardest time with those platforms on any difficulty let alone insanity. At that point of the game, my first insane playthrough cost me a new Xbox controller and was inches away from a new TV...

EDIT: Controller vs Basement Wall
Wall-1
Controller-0

I had no problem with him in insanity. But in my first playthrough in normal, this fight made me spit my teeth. The only difficult fight in the game at the time. But when I understood I had to run toward the geth snipe to hide behind the crate behind him, it was a piece of cake.
Benezia, I think I died once in normal. And had the freeze bug once. Never found it hard though.

In ME2: Well the first time I played insanity, the first fight on freedom progress with my infiltrator was hell. It's still one of the 2-3 fight who kills me at least once each insane playthrough with a new class (I could juste move back to the last area but the mech don't want to pass the door, so it feels too much like cheating). The other being last horizon fight and the collector ship first fight.
