So, running through right now as a Engineer. I was about 40 hours into the game as a infiltrator but had a HD die on me and my backups were corrupt. Needless to say, I had to start over.

I was torn on what class and juggled between engineer, vanguard and sentinel (btw, did start one for each class hehe :) )

But, so far, I am having a blast as a engineer. Really forces me to think about the battlefield, look for stuff I can blow up via overload. Might not be up front action like vanguard or soldier, but tactically speaking, it is fun.

Quick side note, which is the better route to go: mechanic or demolisher?
I am running through on hardcore right now. i had *heard* that cryo blast is not a great one to put points into on hardcore and insanity because most of the enemies will be immune. Can anyone verify?

Just deciding whether I should go with assault rifle or sniper rifle after the collector mission. Suggestions?

So far, all classes I have tested have been fun. Can not think of one that is dull. Great job bioware!

I'd take Demolisher for sure.

As Kronner said Demolisher.

What is meant is that you have to strip defenses to freeze enemies, but it's still a nice power to use.

For me it comes down to casting powers with a scope or without, but shotgun engineer is another possibility for you.

Demolisher is good for most builds, but if for whatever reason you decide to make use of cryoblast then mechanic is the way to go.

I've actually got a cryo-blast vid uploading at the moment for my shotgun engineer thread.

Very cool. I look forward to checking it out.
What about AI hacking? Worth it?

It's definitely good for mech heavy levels but I wouldn't invest more than 3 points in it. At 4 points it lasts so long that you wind up having to waste time killing your own hacked mechs which have a mess of shields. With 3 points they tend to last just long enough to where they're all help and no hassle.

I go with Mechanic on my Geth Shield Boost/Combat Drone build, but Demolisher is better on most other builds.

Demolisher gives power damage bonus (Overload, Incinerate profit). Mechanic gives duration bonus (Incinerate, Cryo Blast, AI Hacking and Combat Drone benefit though Combat Drones are gone long before).

It depends what powers you use most, I go for Mechanic - the extra duration suits my playstyle best. I use drones, Neural Shock (bonus power) 80% of the time; sometimes Incinerate and Cryo Blast; Overload (almost) only to detonate Pyros.

Demolisher is better if your Engineer main focus is defense stripping.

With AI Hacking don't shields disappear after the duration has ended, which means you can cast it again after it's done? I'm sure I've seen this on the gameplay videos.

Hacking is actually fairly useless only as a rank 1 power as the target gets no shield and is killed instantly by it's allies, never really upgraded it beyond rank 2 including Tali and Legion's Hacking I'm interested to try out an evolved version though.

To the OP, Sniper training kinda makes Engineers too easy for me, almost felt like playing Infiltrators in a way that's not to say it isn't fun, Shotguns are fun if you get it right (evolved Neural Shock and Attack Drone) and it can be done.

AI Hacking is great; both on Shep and Tali/Legion. I prefer the Improved version (all the others won't last long on tougher enemies). Unlike Dominate (enemies kneel first; get up and look around confused before they act), AI Hacking's effect is instant. Very effective on Geth missions, but equally useful on missions with mechs - I love hacking Loki's and dogs (finally a useful pet instead of a space hamster in a box :)

Shotgun and Neural Shock is win win for an Engineer :)

Mechanic is better if your build focuses on cc powers, Demolisher is better if you're focusing on damage powers, so it depends on your playstyle preferences.

Wait, so you're saying that all Rank 1 Hacking does is kill any defense-stripped enemy with a single cast while distracting every enemy on the battlefield for 3 seconds? What a useless skill!

Kidding aside, I swear by a rank 1 AI Hacking. All skills serve one of two purposes- killing stuff, or preventing stuff from killing you (either through crowd control, time dilation, or shield boosts). Personally, I've never played an Engineer and thought "man, you know what this class needs? *MORE* crowd control!". I've frequently thought "you know what this class needs? More killing power!", though. As a result, I tend to prefer a lower-level Hacking (no shields = more killing) to a higher-level hacking (more shields = less killing, more distracting). Besides, the Engineer has so many good skills to spend points on that I never have spare points to sink into Hacking.

Appreciate the feedback. Very helpful. I look forward to trying a few of these out.

Just a few side questions.

1.) Respecing your skill points. Can you respec everything, including your specialty? Meaning, could I try demolisher, then respec, and try mechanic? On the same note, anyway you can respect your squad mates?

2.) what is the best power to take down enemy biotic barriers? overload? Warp?

Thx!

You can change bonus power once Mordin has joined the crew; you can respec all skill points after Horizon - squadmates only aboard the SB ship (you'll need the LotSB dlc for this).

2.) what is the best power to take down enemy biotic barriers? overload? Warp?

Overload only works against shields. Both Warp and Reave will remove barriers, but one GPS shot will do the trick also.

^Overload is insta-hit, so it's your best bet vs. pyros. For the same reason it's also handy with a sniper scope all kinds of long range goodness.
