These forums are full of fan creations where some mod, tweak or other have been used. But I have yet to see one for ME1. Just as in ME2, I'd like to tweak the hair color of a character in ME1, add a script for a flycam to get screenshots from new angles, etc, etc. Am I the only one with such wishes or is ME1 far harder to mod than ME2?

If ME1 is moddable, which things do you guys think could be edited?

There's a tex mod for Garrus' blurry face.

I do believe there is a way to use the Flycam in ME1. Check out the PC cheats for ME1 here.

@praetor_alpha - thanks man, I've read about a mod for Garrus' face, but I thought it was for ME2. I'll see if I can find that one.

Edit: found it! Now I have "only" to get the texmod working for ME1...

@TS2Aggie - much oblige, Aggie, didn't know about a flycam being included in those options. I'll see if I can get it to work.

What about changing the color or style of a character's hair - is it possible? I realize that there may not be more hair styles available in the data files for ME1, but the color values ought to be editable, I think.

PS. I've just read what is required to enable the flycam in ME1. Changes must be made which "may alter your profile permanently, and tag it as invalid". Just enabling the console engine or activating the flycam, would this alter the profile? If so, could this affect the transfer of ME1 characters to ME2? Even if I swap the "altered" profile for a "clean" profile backup copy right before ME1 ends and a "Char_######"-file for ME2 is created?

@Domar: you're welcome. :)

The one thing I've noticed is that when I change any of the bindings from within ME1 after I've replaced the two files, they will be overwritten and all the flycam stuff is lost. That's my best guess based after losing flycam when I changed ME1 commands to match up with the ME2 ones.

OK, I'll see how it works. But it appears x-pan made a Clean Movies Mod with commands matching those for ME2 and I've downloaded that one. Maybe I won't feel the need to change those commands.

BTW, I like your new elven avatar  ;)

No prob. I got the Steam version working with texmod, and all it was, was a bit of exe renaming-fu. But sadly, this disables antialiasing for some reason...

Strange with that anti-aliasing thing. I have the Steam version as well, but decided I might win something on staying away from Steam in the case of ME1, so I got the DVD-ROM version into play instead (it's cheap enough nowadays). I'll see if that changes anything.

What type of graphics card are you using, Praetor - NVidia or ATI?

NVidia Geforce GTX 280. I've overridden it in the NV control panel for both the texmod exe and the mass effect exe, but nothing worked. No texmod, everything's fine. Hopefully when my card gets back from RMA next week, it will work. I run everything I can at 1920x1200 on a 24" monitor, so anti-aliasing isn't exactly a must have, but is a really nice perk if I can keep 60+fps.

Might just be a quirk in the particular driver version I was using (197, I think). Texmod might be hooking into how the 3D context is created, or directly modifying video RAM, causing it to freak out.

I specifically got the Steam version to not deal with the nasty install limit DRM on the DVD version.

NVidia, huh? I may be out of luck then if I use texmod. But I have a different hardware setup (less powerful) than you and different drivers, so we'll see.

Didn't know there's was an install limit on the DVD version. The case says nothing about that. I have a copy from EA Value Games, maybe there are different editions of the game with different limitations in this respect. But how is one to know what this limit is?

At release, the install limit was 3. It might have been increased to 5 after a few months, like other EA games saddled with Securom online activations. Also, they released a little tool that allows you to "deactivate" your copy so you don't lose an activation (to transfer your installation to a new PC or when you're changing some hardware on your PC for example).

As for changing your character's hair, haven't heard of anybody doing that in ME1 yet, but it might be possible if you have some experience with hex-editing. The morph values for you character seem to be stored in the player.sav file, which is one of 3 files contained in the .MassEffectSave files (they're actually zip files with a few extra bytes at the start)

Thanks for this info, King!

Interesting bit regarding possible hex-editing...:)

Good news: video card got back. Using 260.99 nvidia drivers, I can't get antialiasing going. I don't know what options are available in texmod that might get it going.

But I have an interesting bug: instead of Garrus' face looking like a poop smear, random textures will look like a poop smear, like the metal floor grating of the Normandy elevator and lower level, or Chakwas' suit.

Is this still due to the use of that texmod? I mean, what happens if you don't use it?

I'm testing a lot of different characters right now and haven't come as far into the game with any of them so that there's a point in using that texmod (haven't met Garrus yet). Unless...well, I'll do it soon enough. We'll see how things turn out on my side of the show then.

I never noticed this behavior before, but then I don't think I've done a full playthrough with texmod. If I don't texmod, then everything looks like it should with normal high res textures, aside from G's face needing a cleaning.

YMMV, I guess.

As this thread inquired about mods for ME1 and recieved a few tips, I thought I should give my fellow gamers a link where you could see one of the results: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/128/index/5154416. This thread is now full of flycam shots (though not exclusively). Anyone interested in what that technique can do for the game experience or unique pics could do well to head over and have a look, especially in the second post.

Edit: come to think of it, here's another result using a mod for ME1...
