I was just reading through articles on the Mass Effect wiki (very bored at present), and something occurred to me about Nihlus.  It says he was born outside of Hierarchy space in a merc camp.  However, he has the same markings as the turian councillor, indicating they are from the same colony.  Can turians adopt colonies?  Do they change facial markings if they move?  I know it is probably just an oversight but Nihlus was always one of my favorite character from ME1 and I wish we could have seen or heard more about him.

Well the Hierarchy did bring the Turian colonies back into their fold some time from 500 BCE to 200 BCE, which is at least like 1983 years ago from ME.

So I'd guess they use the same markings because they are from the same colony, like you said, its just that Nihlus' family was not in Turian space, maybe its how children of American military personnel born in South Korea, Japan, Germany (to name a few places) are still considered American Citizens.

So maybe it's not an oversight, just pride in their roots.

Perhaps I'm drunk, but isn't it like 2300-2600 years ago(from ME)?  BCE being prior to the start of the common era, 1AD on the Christian timeline?  Mass Effect taking place in the later parts of the 2100's?

Regardless, I'm sure it's just a colony marking... perhaps in the same way that Scottish people have a clan tartan regardless of what country they were born in.  His(Nihlus) parents were perhaps Mercs, though they had and instilled strong ties to thier roots in their son.

Off by 200 hundred then, although it's not exactly clear when the Unification War ended and when the colonies began accepting Hierarchy Rule either.

Animosity did continue for decades after, and I did say at least, either way I assume the Timeline is using Galactic Standard Time also, so meh. :D

its just a shame that nihlus has to die and we (may) be left with the turian councillor. I, however, actually like the asari and salarian councillors and can never bring myself to kill them, even on most of my renegade games.

anyway back on topic. considering the councillor is from this colony and the facial markings appear to be the most ornate seen in the game as-of-yet, could he be from Palaven?

That would be cool, that when the Colonists were accepted back in, that the people on Palaven adopted the markings or made their own either in solidarity or protest.

Either way the markings give more character and depth for the Turians.

Found the Codex entry, it's the last paragraph regarding "barefaced" that made me think about the Turian markings.

Nihlus was the Trask Ulgo of ME1.

While not being super-deep and drawn out they were still super cool for the small amount of time they spent in the game(s)

while its too late for Trask I hope we get some more Nihlus somewhere, he just seemed too important to me to get killed off so quick and never pop-up again. Maybe he'll be in a prequel book or comic.

We can only hope.
