Assignments or Missions first?

I'm mid-way through my first playthrough for Mass Effect (played ME2 already before), and so far I've basically tried to finish all of my assignments before tackling the missions.  Of course, I recruited my companions first, including Liara, and I also couldn't resist going to Feros first.  However, I am wondering if in my second playthrough, I should recruit my companions, and then do all of the assignments before starting my missions (i.e. Feros, Noveria, Virmire, Ilos, etc.).

My goal is to have an optimal character not only for ME2/ME3, but also for maximizing my enjoyment of ME1.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Also, I've heard that to get the most out of the game, I should load a two-playthrough save into ME2, why is that?

After recruiting Liara, I usually start about the Missions but I look at the path of the Normandy on the galaxy map and instead of jumping, say, 7 systems at once, I'll go system by system, surveying planets and doing whatever assignments I come across on my way to the Mission. That makes it feel sorta more "organic", to me anyway.

Just remember to do all the assignments you want done before you go to Ilos! As for your last question, I'd like to see that answer too, not that it will matter since I haven't replayed any of my careers and I'll be getting ME2 today Image IPB

Hi Stryker, thanks for taking the effort to go back to ME1.  I actually did something similar, replaying ME1 after learning about ME2 before it came out (like how Shepard joins Cerberus), to create an ideal storyline to carry-over.

I think as you save Virmire for last, you're ok.  Technically, as long as you do all the assignments before Ilos, you're fine (but I think Virmire creates a huge sense of urgency).  I like to visit the Citadel after every major mission as well, taking care of assignments on the way, since I thought it was the "home base" for the Normandy to re-stock and give the crew some shore leave.  Talk to all the Squad Members between missions as well, you'll find interesting things.

1 spoiler - help Wrex keep his promise before heading to Virmire.

Why 2 playthroughs before importing to ME2 - because you get an extra bonus if you transfer a max level 60 character.  You can't get to level 60 in just 1 playthrough, it usually takes 2 or 3.  But I'm an idiot and it took me 4 (my 3rd playthrough took me to level 59, I raged).  It's not really necessary, though.

I usually can hit level 59 in a sinlge playthrough, so 2 is needed for me to reach 60.  The biggest reason to do so is the starting bonuses you recieve, but also a few "quests".

*Spoilier*

A good example is on Feros, you can complete a dialog with a charm/intimidate option that you usually can't in a single playthrough.

*End Spoiler*

In ME2 your character will be level 4 to start if your level 59 when imported, and level 5 to start if your import was level 60.  You also get a bonus to paragon and renegade meters based on your level from your import.  There are also a heafty amount of resourses and credits given to you.  You won't even have to ever scan for Element Zero, for example.  It's really worth the extra run through the game, in my opinion.

Be careful about leaving stuff until just before Ilos. There are a couple of side missions that require returning to the Citadel, and once you steal the Normandy you can't go back and complete them

I've never actually tried going back to the Citadel after stealing the Normandy. I'm sure hilarity would ensue.

*Shepard walks into the human embassy to find Udina just waking up with a huge shiner*

Udina: Ugh, I thought you'd be gone by now.

Shepard: Forgot my keys.

*Shepard grabs keys, walks out*

I did some playthroughs where I first finished all the secondary missions before going to the main ones, but at some point I got too bored with the excess of assignments.

In other words, my advice is: try to mix main missions with the secondary ones.

I usually do a few assignments between every main mission. Some playthroughs I go for all assignments first, but it can be a little boring to just drive around on planets all day. But as the others say; be sure to do all assignments before you head to Ilos.
