I have been impressed that Bioware employees post on their forums over the years. But keep in mind, we're their fans and are kind of like a wild, odd assortment of mushrooms growing in an otherwise orderly garden of their keeping. Okay, some of us might be ants, crickets, worms, birds...koalas...hmm, I'm distracted now...*wanders off after eucalyptus leaves*

Look mommy, a koala bear!

Damn, discovered again! *quickly puts on Groucho Marx glasses with a fake nose and mustache attached*

Thanks, BioWare, for putting up with our wankery? XD

No really, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. We do love you guys. Even when we throw little hissy fits, we do it out of love. I think. Hmm.

I am. Quit asking!

I've always felt that I didn't know even a little about how videogames were made until I got into this industry, so i enjoy explaining some of what goes on behind the scenes (when I am permitted). i'm also a big fan of consumers exercising their might, so you'll see me sometimes flip-flop between "sorry, company's gotta do what it's gotta do" and "gamers of the world unite!" They're not mutually exclusive, but it does make me sound a bit inconsistent.

But as a developer and a Moderator here, i'm always happy to engage our community members in discussion. As long as they're discussing something and not demanding it, that is. ;)

We really need a sort of short documentary on the inner working of Bioware. It would actually be really interesting. That was the one of the great things about Uncharted 2 and God of War 3, was their short little pieces on the creation of the games, which i found really interesting.

Don't know about responsive, ME forum is not visited by BW staff unless they promote new cloth/pics to buy. Oh well, like as if anyone cares, in the end BW talk to fans more than most others do.

Thank you indeed, many a developer should learn from this. I don't have much experience on these boards to say what they could do better in terms of response with the fans but all I know is they already rise above and beyond in that regard.

As perhaps a game designer in the making, I'm taking their example and that's what I think they are doing. Setting the standard so another, or themselves, could rise higher with communication with the fans.

If I ever do get in the business, I hope to keep in communion with the fans and try to follow Bioware' example. They may not be the best, and they may not be the fastest in terms of thread responses and choice but in most cases if you have a sincere question it looks like it gets answered.

So like most others, save that strange person named Mike, I'd like to thank you for setting the bar and getting along with a bunch of people that would've driven me mad. How do you guys do it?

Bioware definitely has the best devs EVER! I've never seen a forum with so many devs responding to the average Joe's posts. Before I came to these forums not too long ago, the last time I had seen a dev post among the masses was back in 2000 when I got the chance to chat with Patrick Barret III, the lead programmer of The Sims. For years, I was primarily a Bethesda fan, where the devs *never* post on the forums, because they don't like all the criticism.

I also like how you guys consider PC gamers when you work. Bethesda ports ALL their games from XBox 360 to PC (then denies it, only to slip the truth later), then doesn't even bother to change the interface, so we get BIG buttons and few options on the screen at one time. Your PC games actually look like PC games.

Even more admirable is how you make games based on what you like and not what sells. You let your writers work close with the designers themselves, so the lore actually ends up in the game instead of being something that is ignored when convenient (aka profitable). In short, even if I don't always agree with the changes from one game to the other, it comforts me knowing that you guys make those changes because you *like* them. Thank you :).

PS. I'm much more comfortable with the DAO -> DA2 changes now. Thanks again :).

Thanks Bioware for turning KOTOR into an MMO,

You're welcome. I hope y'all like it as much as I did. And if you look very closely, you might just find some familiar names in the characters. Just sayin'...

abandoning RPG development for shooters with dialogue trees,

I defy you to demonstrate how Dragon Age 2 is a "shooter." And it doesn't sound like you had a problem with our "dialogue trees" before.

and now casualising your "hardcore" RPG offering.

Yes, our games are now going to be enjoyed by millions upon millions of potential players rather than just going to please the small number of players who identify as "hardcore RPG." Terrible thing, this wanting to make money and open up our games to a wider audience. Simply terrible. :P Videogame elitism is a shameful thing. We should be sharing our interests and preferences, not denouncing others who happen to like different features or games or genres.

I think all this defensiveness comes from having our hobby denigrated as "nerdy" or "childish" for so long. Now that it's mainstream, we still lash out at our detractors when we feel threatened. Fret not, gamers, for you are now awesome--so awesome, in fact, that you can love multiple genres, games, and features simultaneously. You can be gaming-polygamous! :D

RPGs and I have an open relationship.  I can play shooters and strategy games, and Dragon Age can date Mass Effect.  It's not an issue for us.

Oh I see what you did there. ;)
Can't wait to see how it runs, personally. Can't wait for the story, and the action.... I want it now.

As for opening your games to a wider audience, kind of a duh, but I've seen many people complain about how much easier and simplified the games are getting.(ME Inventory system, specifically) But they just don't appreciate that not everyone wants a overly complicated remake of Baulder's Gate 2.

So in my part, thank you, you've made an amazing community here, and I can't wait for your upcoming games!

We're okay with it, too, but you know how some people can be about mixed marriages. Society will implode, entire armies will become unable to engage in combat, New Orleans will be awash in natural disasters, etc etc.

agree w/ original poster, good post. Thank you BioWare for both making great games, and being a part of the online community.

in any other game i could think of numerous issues to ask the devs about. but since you guys are so available i find myself at a loss for questions. kind of like the end of an interview when the interviewer ask if you have any questions. you don't have any until it's too late lol.

For all the crap we give them they're pretty good to us, I like to think its because they're genuinely enthusiastic about the games they make and they realise we obsess because we care.

It's also because they know that much of the criticism we give them is because we care, too. They want their games to be good, as do we. We just have some differing opinions about what makes games good.

Many people here really liked DA:O, and are very concerned by how DA2 is different from DA:O in aspects other than the story.

We're their biggest critics because we're their biggest fans.

Second biggest critics, actually. I doubt you'll find anyone more critical of their own work than the people who create it ;)

You obviously aren't familiar with my posts on the ME2 forum.  That brings up a good point though, the DA team is indeed very responsive and deserving of praise for their community interaction.  Unfortunately they do not represent BW as a whole.

THERE IS ONE WAY TO LOVE RPG'S AND ONE WAY ONLY

...of course, now this makes me remember that conversation Mary, Sheryl and I had about the Blight as an analogy for the Dreaded Gay Agenda following one amusing news bit during the gay marriage debate up here in Canada. It made more sense than it should have.

Irrational?  Check.
Short-sighted?  Check.
Narrow-minded?  Check.

Analogy passes basic testing, even though further analysis indicates original quote was actually reference to something equally analogous.

Yes. Scrapping hard core RPGs is certainly standing up for diversity.
