I've had ME running successfully on my brand new Win 7 64 bit system up unitl the recent Windows update in November.
Now I get the following error went I try to autorun:

Error: Switch from current coding to specified coding not supported. Line 1, Column 40 in inter XML settings'

Is there any solution to this that anyone is aware of?

I've read this thread but no solution is found...:(

Cheers

I originally had the same problem. Just dowload and install the patches for ME1 you find here. I don't remember wich one, but they fix the problem.

Unfortunately i uninstalled it, now I get the error just by putting the DVD the drive. I rang microsoft and they said that they wouldn't make a fix and that the game developers have to keep up with them, not vice versa.

I thought tech support was joint EA/Microsoft for this game?

Microsoft published the XBox version, EA the PC version. As far as I know there's no overlap in support, so EA would be the ones to contact.

When you insert the disc into the drive, hold down the left shift key to disable autorun. Then, browse the disc and look for setup.exe and run that. Does it work?

Also, read up on what changes the latest update to Win7 made to your system. Its your system, its up to you to make sure that everything works together and doesnt conflict.

Do you have Word/Office 2003 on your system? Microsft had been found guilty of violating another companies IP when it comes to XML and were ordered by the courts to stop selling/supoprting the infringing code. The latest update could have stripped XML funtionality from your machine.

I now get the message that the installer has stopped working...I suppose it's progress of a sort.

I've Office 07 installed...not sure if that has any conflicts.

I suppose the quick fix would be to uninstall the update...but surely that would also cause problems.

Sheesh...consoles are starting to look more and more tempting all the time.

I can't see any changes to XML in the latest update...this is driving me nuts

Further investigation reveals Office 2007 was also included in the court ruling.

Quick check of the MS site, and have a possible answer..

http://www.microsoft...43-c6bb74cd1466

Download that package, which should re-establish your XML capability.

Then there is also an XML service pack:

http://www.microsoft...74-f752bdca9582

Give those a try.

You sir, are a shining example of all things good in the world.

Unfortunately, this did not work and I am still receiving the same error message.
EA tech support was not sure if I was talking about ME1 or 2 and suggested I empty my temp folder.
I am not very hopeful of finding a solution to this considering the length of time since Techgee and Telstar1 first posted about it in the link I in the first post.
I'll keep an eye on this thread for any ideas in the off chance that something changes...

At least I'm not alone (see below)

In the off chance that the devs read this:

About the only other thing i can think of, is perhaps regional settings. (the switch from current to specific coding message). You're not running your system with say, US regional settings, and playing an EU version of the game, are you? (or vice versa)

I'm facing the same problem here, where can i change regional settings?

You can change region settings via device manager. Just open device manager, select your drive and click properties. You only get a limited number of changes though.

This didn't work for me anyway. Same error.

Sometime it looks like it's about to install then the installer stops working. Stumped, I tells ya!

I manage to
start the game. I went to the steam folder (C:\\Program Files
(x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\mass effect) and launched the game as
administrator by right-clicking on MassEffectLauncher.exe and choosing
"Run as administrator".(Ok, i don't why, but whenever i post the link they add an extra "backslash".)

Yeah, I've tried all the compatibilty modes, I've tried running as an administrator and I tried it whilst standing on one leg with my tongue in the left side of my mouth whilst juggling bananas during a full moon.
I hate it that I am not a systems analyst and my pedestrian level computer hacking skills are not up to the task of getting a freakin game to simply run.
Why should I need a degree in computer engineering to play a game?

C'mon, seriously....EA please fix this!!

(Edit: Just found that I can't install ME2 on my system either!! this is complete b*llsh*t!

Be sure and turn off the stupid automatic updates, and then always create a new Restore Point before manually running the update procedure, so you can undo it when it's another screw-up.

best.advice.evar.

Got more realistic help/support from this site and it's contributors than EA/Microsoft put together. Thanks all!

Here is a direct chat form an EA support member

Image IPB Sunny: Hi, my name is Sunny. How may I help you?
Image IPB 2275550492: hi, you are the third person I have talked to regarding my issue with a downloaded game I hope you can help
Image IPB Sunny: ok
Image IPB 2275550492: I downloaded mass effect 2 from amazon and it installs fine but when I try to play it I get an error saying that an error occured due to a misconfiguration. I have reinstalled 5 times now, downloaded the EA game managment thing 3 times and that never works, downloaded a few things outside of ea like the nvidia update and all kinds of things and no one seems to be able to tell me how to fix this problem
Image IPB Sunny: Are you meeting the minimum requirements ?
Image IPB Sunny: for the MAss effect 2 game
Image IPB Sunny: mass
Image IPB 2275550492: yes
Image IPB Sunny: To do this:

1) Go to Start -> Run.
2) In the box, type the following: dxdiag
3) Click 'OK'
4) Click the 'Save All Information' button on the first screen of the application.
5) Then on top of the 'Save As' box that pops up, select Desktop (if it's not set to save there already), then click Save.
6) Finally, copy all the content to the chat window.

Once I get the Dxdiag, I'll take a look and let you know what to do from there.
Image IPB File attachment upload has started.
Image IPB The file DxDiag.txt (24.31KB) was received.
Image IPB 2275550492: done that for both people too.
Image IPB Sunny: Image IPB http://support.ea.co...r mass effect 2
Image IPB Sunny: Please follow the steps provided in this link
Image IPB 2275550492: nothing happend
Image IPB Sunny: After that you would be able to play the game.
Image IPB Sunny: Have you followed all the steps.
Image IPB Sunny: ?
Image IPB 2275550492: still getting the same thing
Image IPB Sunny: Have you run the "EAAccessInstaller.exe" file
Image IPB 2275550492: all i have is the EAProxyinstaller
Image IPB Sunny: No you have to run that file . Only then the game will work fine
Image IPB 2275550492: where do I get that if it isnt there then
Image IPB Sunny: In which drive you have installed the game ?
Image IPB 2275550492: c:
Image IPB 2275550492: i found that but now it is saying it can only be run in siletn mode
Image IPB Sunny: Please put the game in silent mode and then run.
Image IPB Sunny: Please can you share your screen screen with me so that I can see
Image IPB Sunny is requesting to view the desktop on this computer. If accepted, the agent will be able to view, but not control, this computer.
Image IPB Initializing and connecting screen-sharing session...
Image IPB The screen-sharing session has started.
Image IPB 2275550492: has it come up yet?
Image IPB Sunny: ok
Image IPB Sunny: I can see it now
Image IPB 2275550492: what do you want me to do?
Image IPB Sunny: Please show me that fine "EAAccessInstaller.exe"
Image IPB Sunny: click it
Image IPB 2275550492: did you see all of it?
Image IPB Sunny: Ye
Image IPB Sunny: yes
Image IPB Sunny: I want to give you some information about the game.
Image IPB Sunny: I would like to inform you that this game is not compatible with the Windows 7 (64 bit)
Image IPB Sunny: As you are using this OS.
Image IPB Sunny: This game is not compatible with this OS
Image IPB 2275550492: then how come other people I know running the same OD have no problem with the game?
Image IPB 2275550492: OS
Image IPB Sunny: May be they are running on the 32 bit OS
Image IPB Sunny: It might work on that.
Image IPB 2275550492: nope 64 bit. cause I installed on their system
Image IPB Sunny: But there is no possibility of the game to run on this OS
Image IPB 2275550492: and I assume EA has no plans to support a good OS and only supports the slow crappy one?
Image IPB Sunny: Now or after some time they will get some error in the game.
Image IPB Sunny: I apologize for the inconvenience.
Image IPB Sunny: But they have not tested the game yet on this operating system.
Image IPB Sunny: As they clearly mentioned on the game that they can run the game in XP

apparentley they dont give a **** if you have windows 7 64bit and wont do **** about it

I got a very similar response. It took several emails to make them understand I was even talking about Mass Effect, not ME2.

i think it makes sense to make sure it compatible considering all 3 games are linked by previously existing save-game files...and it should be patched to support all OS.

In any case, I finished ME on my win 7 64 bit PC and have transferred my save to ME2..which IS supported.
