Liara T'Soni Character Discussion Thread *possible ME3 spoilers*

I wouldn't necessarily say that it's the abilities themselves that are unusual for a maiden her age, but the drive, focus and will to actually develop them to that level. I get the sense from the games that asari maidens are generally scattered - for want of a better term - and rather aimless in their maiden-age wanderings. Liara is awfully goal-oriented in comparison, which, combined with specialized training and inherited potential, makes her equal in power to much, much older asari.
I do like the ME2 mechanics better - the fact that only Liara and AdeptShep get Singularity is a better illustration of what has been stated in both ME1 and ME2 about Liara's power level.
On a related note, I've always felt that Liara was something of a child prodigy, in human terms. From things Samara said about Morinth (I can't remember all the details offhand), I ballparked that Morinth ran off at around the age of 40, and Samara basically said that was ridiculously young for an Asari to be on her own. Liara would have finished her doctorate in her 50's, so a bunch of little things lead me to believe that this is highly unusual, and about equivalent of a human in their late teens finishing a doctorate. For me, that explains Liara's unusual mix of maturity in regards to her focus and drive, and her immaturity in being so awkward in social situations.
Of course, a lot of the "canon" stuff about the Asari is vague, if not outright contradictory. Hard to say.

I concur in regards to Liara having specialized training, and and a great deal of biotic potential which she inherited from Benezia. I further posit that developing biotic ability requires a great deal of mental discipline and focus, and these are things Liara has in spades. I think this all ties in with her unusual status as a maiden with a real job, rather than one who wanders about aimlessly as a merc or stripper.

I'm still debatting if asari are still in a child form when they're 20 or 30 years old.

I play mostly colonist/SS backgrounds, and I imagine something similar to what Jack went through happening to my Shepard during those two events, opening up the route to stronger biotics, but she doesn't really know how to use them to their fullest potential yet.
Plus, biotics are usually the key component to the more badass cutscenes in the game and I want that for my Shepard, though it's always frustrating knowing my Shepard is biotic and could pull some of that stuff off but since the 'canon' is soldier it doesn't happen

Yes, I agree. Most of Liara's enhanced abilities comes from her drive. This is why she probably kept up with her training, even though she eventually became an archaeologist. I doubt Liara would be one to allow something she's learned in the past go to waste by losing it.

I've always felt the same way. I'm betting it's rare for an asari to achieve this much in academics as such a young age. If I were to guess, most asari probably pursue academic careers (if desired) in the Matron stage (or late Maiden stage. Liara did so right it seems right as she was leaving childhood.
Her social awkwardness stems from many things, IMO. The feelings of alienation from being 'pureblood' and the daughter of Benezia, for one. Besides that, what you mentioned, the fact that she pursued an academic career so early and decided to forgo the merc thing or the things typical maidens tend to do is another reason.

Sentinel Shepard lacked weapon training in ME1. I don't think you can use that game play mechanic to make any guesses about Liara's training.
I was always under the impression that most asari are trained (from youth) to use their biotics in a deadly manner. Liara, being from a wealthy and powerful family, would probably have received the best training. Liara can also use firearms as well as most other Mass Effect squad mates, so I always assumed she received some training there as well. She did also need these skills out on her digs (when attacked by pirates and mercs) so would have kept up on them, practicing them in her spare time (in my mind this is what she did do).
I do believe biotics would be hereditary from the mother's side only and this may also give Liara an edge over other asari her age. She should get more powerful as she ages, becoming probably one of the most powerful biotics (if not the most powerful) in the galaxy some day.
True enough about Sentinel Shepard. But I would argue that was more about gameplay (same with Kaidan), Liara was modelled after the adept who had the pistol skill. Bioware also seem to give squadmates slightly diffrent skills if it matches with their character from time to time.

I really hope to catch a glimpse of Liara in the trailer, I'd like her to move back to the front of the pack in terms of character importance.

In LotSB, at Liara's apartment, I really love both your squadmates staying at the door, not wandering around the place... like, despite of everything that's happening, it's a private moment for Shepard, and they respect that....

I'm playing the LOTSB version of the scene where Liara tells you about saving your corpse. I didn't realize the lines are different if you were still romancing her. She talks about Cerberus knowing about you two. While in the original version, she says she wouldn't let a friend die.
When do you get this?

I agree. It's poingnat that they let you have your own moment alone to explore the apartment. At that point,
Liara could possibly be dead, for all Shepard knows.

It's when you ask Liara why she gave you to Cerberus. If you're just a friend, or you moved on, she says something different. While if you haven't moved on, she says Cerberus knew about them, as in they knew they were together once.

Oh, you are doing the LotSB mission before finishing the Observer quest?

No, I did it after, but I asked Liara if she needed any more help instead of asking her about her anger towards the Shadow Broker. If you hit that option, Liara closes the conversation, and thus you can't ask her till LOTSB.

It does feel wrong finishing Shadow Broker during ME2. It just doesn't seem to fit in, because it feels too short for a relationship story in the main game. While if you play it after, it works more as a short story. Not only that, when I finished LOTSB during ME2, and right after ME1, I kept freaking out over how Liara keeps changing.
I always play LotSB after ME2. I still don't know what scene you were talking about earlier.
Edit: You mean you did the Observer quest after the SM?

Is the is dialogue that occurs if you do not ask Liara why she is so upset with the Shadow Broker before getting the LotSB mission? I always wanted to explore this dialog. I actually meant to do so on my most recent;t playthrough, but I totally forgot to not ask Liara.
That's actually pretty interesting. I need to remember to trigger this option next time. I also like that she says something different to a Shep she romanced vs one she did not.

I agree. It's nice to think that at some of Shepard's crew is aware of Shep's emotions and feelings. To think that something could have happened to Liara. Obviously Shepard needs some time to adjust and accept the current situation. I for one am glad Shepard was given this moment of contemplation and exploration.

Alright, here's what I'm talking about.
Observer Quest: After you finish it, and you are given the option to ask Liara about how she gave you're body to Cerberus. However, you can avoid asking this question, and ask her something else which ends the conversation.
Then, after giving the Cerberus information to Liara, you'll get a different version of Liara telling you how she gave you to Cerberus. You can ask her why, and there will be some differences based on your relationship with Liara.

Actually, you know what? If you're not going to play LOTSB till you finished ME2, then I'd ask her after the Observer quest, and then tell her to be careful. Because that's the best way to put the relationship on hold until you finished ME2. It makes you hopeful, but still troubled. But at least you got to ask her about some things. While doing it the other way made me pissed at Shepard for not asking questions, or talking to Liara for weeks.
But that's just my impression right now.
I'm actually kind of pissed Shepard never even asked her how she got setup as an Information Broker, or how much she knew about his mission. The whole thing made me mad how they kept talking about business right after I finished ME1, and how much she has change, and yet Shepard doesn't really care. I also didn't like that Shepard knew where she was, but only came to visit once he needed squad members. I wished they talked more.

No wait, that's a bit subjective. But I'm still looking. The problem is ME2...so many botched lines.

Has anyone tried making a mod that makes Liara's ME2 skin into the LOTSB skin? Because it still bothers me how she switched from one to the other. It's screwing with my head, since I might get used to look A, only for it to radically change to version B.
