Also, I might add, I don't think this new consciousness created from the two is a simple sum of their own individual consciousnesses. I think it's an entirely unique thing in itself. In our own individual mind, we have certain thoughts or ideas that are connected to others. If we remember one thing, it triggers another memory or triggers a specific emotion (anger, guilt, happiness). If we receive certain stimuli, this triggers a memory or thought. I think these triggers would be gone in the united consciousness, so the Shep/Liara united mind would be looking back over both of their memories in a new light and forming new 'triggers' or 'connections' together. I'm also completely talking out of my ass.
No, I agree with you. I enjoy discussing aspects of the asari union, as it's something that one could only experience in the imagination. As far as I am aware, no two sentient beings have ever been able to join consciousnesses, resulting in the specifics of the asari union being entirely open to interpretation. However, there is one thing that is certain, which is that the Shepard/Liara romance is able to ascend to a plane that no other Mass Effect romance experiences, and involves both Shepard and Liara creating a true bond of mutual trust, love and dedication. It's a beautiful aspect of their romance, and one that I greatly appreciate. The pair of them often share thoughts, memories and experiences with each other, which is testament to just how strong their relationship is.
As far as "soulmates" go, I think that my Shepard and Liara are already essentially bondmates. All that is lacking is the official ceremony, which is something that I think will occur following the defeat of the Reapers. They're dedicated and in love with each other, and their relationship is stronger than ever.
