Are you kidding me? Jacob gets to hear that and Liara doesn't. AHHHH.

Jacob (without the priiize) always struck me as quiet but solid, and his response here seems much more in his character (whether there's a romance or not) than some of the silliness that comes later. (Maybe he was nervous about going up to Shepard's cabin and Miranda maliciously gave him a copy of "The Player's Guide" .)
Anyway, if Liara couldn't be there to hear that, she'd just be glad someone was :)

Theres something very wrong with this though.. it's in English.. I doubt that English is the native language on Thessia....

Shepard has a neural implant that affects her vision by warping alien text into English.

Or, suspension of disbelief.

Why would they make it another language, the whole damn alien species speak english, might as well have some degree be in english as well.

Their Omni tools translate other languages.  It's in the novels.

Alright, a little cross referencing here. In Star Wars, they have something called 'Galactic Basic'. Most aliens learn it along side their native tongue so that they can communicate with other species. I'm sure that, in Mass Effect, there is something similar. Having a common language is much more conducive to unity, so I'm sure there is one.

When FemShep is romancing Thane and he calls her "siha", she says "I think my translator just broke down."

On a related note it would be amusing to hear Liara curse in Asari, though made-up swear words always seem to lack a certain something.

I heartily agree, although I think Tali's "Bosh'Tet" definitely works.

I was just about to come back and edit that in. Beat me to it :)

Sten's disgust when he says "pahsherra"  (or whatever it is) is pretty funny as well.

I just want to know what they sound like without translators. Like how they normally speak.

Seems like she'd have an accent at least if that were the case.

I wonder what an asari accent sounds like

Technically, she probably isn't, at least at first.  I wouldn't put it past her to learn it on her own, though, especially shortly after joining the all-human Normandy crew.

It also seems that English is the standard human language (in my game at least) and this is what she'd study....in other versions of the game this is Spanish/German/etc.

Oh, dear.  Now I'm imagining Liara turning off her translator to see how her English is, and then asking Shep to translate some of the words and phrases she's heard the crew use - all of which are wildly inappropriate.

Or what Liara's true voice is, since you're listening to a translator.

It's her real voice just it is translated, most likely only in me1 though seeing how she probably had to learn english when she went on the normandy. like jlb said

Perhaps Shepard would also try to learn the Asari language. Do we know if that's even possible for a human?

I would imagine the tone/pitch/inflection of her real voice is the same as you hear since the translator picks that up and uses it when it spits out the translated voice.  If this weren't the case, every non-human would sound the same to Shepard, as you would just hear one standard voice.

We don't know if it's possible, but I imagine that my Shepard tries to learn it and she and Liara kind of help each other with language lessons.

I really don't think that after only 26 years in the galactic community, every species everywhere would make English the common language....I think it really asinine to assume so.

And as for speaking English, some need a continuation course.. badly.

Does anyone besides me think she has a very slight accent in ME1?

Liara: ...and Joker offered to show me, but somehow I did not think that would be a good idea.
Shep (rubbing the back of her neck): Of course he did.
