I actually think that Liara has always possessed the ability to be ruthless whenever necessary, even before her ME2 character development. As has been stated before, Liara is fully aware of the fact that such conduct is morally questionable, and dislikes it when she is forced to do so. But she only does so out of necessity, and with a great deal of regret, guilt and remorse. In that respect, Liara's moral code has not really changed, and she's still the same woman that we fell in love with in ME1.
The reason as to why I believe that said ruthlessness has always been within her capabilities is because she is incredibly strong-willed, and has always pursued her goals with determination. Liara defied what had been expected of her in following in her mother's footsteps, and becoming a leader amongst the asari. She's always been willing to stand up for what she believes in, and is strong and assertive. I think these traits may have assisted her in developing her personality, and allowed her to compromise her morals when forced to do so. Furthermore, as a powerful and respected leader, I think that Matriarch Benezia would have often been forced into making difficult decisions, in which no answer is truly "correct". Leaders often have to do unpleasant things out of necessity, and Benezia is no exception. Liara and Shiala state that Benezia advocated peace, and was not violent or aggressive at all. She would have been forced to do some morally questionable things, and would have hated doing so, similar to how we describe Liara. I think that Liara would have recognised this from a relatively early age, and may have even been educated by Benezia on this manner of conducting oneself. If Liara was expected to follow in Benezia's footsteps, then logic dictates that she would have been taught how to be reasonably ruthless when necessary.
Additionally, many people seem to overlook that, in ME1, Liara encourages Shepard to defy the orders of the Citadel Council and Ambassador Udina, and find a way to get to Ilos. Liara is actually suggesting that Shepard commit treason, and disobey galactic government. Again, this illustrates the reason as to why I believe that Liara has always possessed the ability to act in a way that she finds morally reprehensible, and only when it is a necessity. I think it's merely a case of ME2/LotSB being the first instance of this ability manifesting itself.
Like Paragon Shepard, Liara is willing and able to do some dirty things when it's an absolute necessity, and for the greater good. She may not like it, but she's able to do so when her hand is forced.
I agree with this assessment of Liara's character change between games and comics wholeheartedly. Very well put Les. Im glad you dident try to ignore her more aggressive actions.
I would have abbreviated your quote but I thought if I did most of the meaning would have been lost, and its such a good explination;P
I also agree she strives for the greater good but she still has the strength to do what must be done at times, but that dosent mean she nessisarily enjoys it.
I also belive her passionate personality pushes her, and even if she was a bit different in ME2 then ME1 she is still the same person on the inside. I knew she would be fine, and thats part of why I stuck by her even in the uncertain days before LotSB
To me, a lot of this makes her character balanced by showing this range of emotions and actions.
Next I want to see Liara laughing her head off, I mean rolling on the floor. I dont think Ive seen that in any of the games me1 or me2, and it would be nice to switch to a more light and Happy range of emotions in ME3. I would get a kick out of her being happy and smiling after all that darkness.
