I dunno... that grin Shepard gives after telling TIM where he can shove his desire for "advancing humanity's interest" leads me to believe that they're not on the friendliest of terms. Of course that assumes you didn't hand them the Collector's base...

I do hope that one way or another, Liara as the Shadow Broker plays an integral role in ME3.

I don't think they are on the friendliest of terms, but I still think that Cerberus is paying the bills, so to speak.

Luckily that's still the case, but, with the new Shadow Broker the interest is MUCH more welcome.

I have to agree with you there [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png[/smilie]

So what did people here think the most powerful moment of LotSB was?

For myself, it'd be the part where Liara is looking at the Shadow Broker communicators and hearing the voices of his operatives all trying to figure out what's going on and, after a moment's hesitation, she confidently steps into the role by telling them that everything is back to normal (coincidentally saying almost exactly the same thing as the last Shadow Broker).

I agree with you, Xilzhra. It took a lot of strength for Liara to do that. I think, initially, she felt relieved that the whole business with the Shadow Broker was finally over when he died, but then she hears the agents reporting into the Broker, wondering what the hell is going on, and she decides rather quickly that she can't just leave the network to fall into ruin (possibly for two reasons....one, it's a valuable asset and two, the power vacuum could lead to dire consequences). I think she ultimately makes a selfless decision by taking up the mantle of Shadow Broker, instead of simply walking away and moving on with her own life.

There were a few very powerful moments. When Liara leaves the cabin, and Jennifer Hale delivers a wistful "come back soon, Liara", I got chills. Happy, emotional chills.

I made an ME3 Shepard/Liara cover that I'm planning on using instead of whatever BioWare will throw at us :)

dA link

I would like to see Liara on the cover of the vanilla ME3 box but I kind of doubt it's going to happen as they will show off new squad mates. Regardless, I like this one better as it has my Shepard on it XD

I also agree with you, Xilizhra. Liara had been so relieved that the Shadow Broker had been defeated, Feron had been rescued, and she could finally simply focus on being happy that Shepard was alive, but then this incredible opportunity was given to her, and knowing how much she'd have to sacrifice, she selflessly stepped into the role. I don't think she did so easily, but she knew that ultimately it was the right choice.

I just wonder how Bioware will handle these events for people that didn't buy LOTSB. perhaps they will just say "Shepard was part of these events, deal with it." Or will they have an alternative story appear where the things happend without Shepard's involvement?

The first one. Lair Of The Shadow Broker is part of the "DLC bridge" into Mass Effect 3. This stuff happens cannonically, like the novels and Redemption.

But LotSB is playable, not setting fiction. It would feel like a massive cheat to me if Shepard's involvement meant nothing. Could Liara have really taken the SB without Shepard's help? Or even found him without TIM's intel? I don't think another rescue would be appropriate, but maybe you can help Liara in some other way in 3 if you didn't play LotSB. (Plus, remember, there's an entire region that can't play LotSB.)

Liara seemed to be close to finding the Shadow Broker already. I think when ME3 starts, Liara's going to be the Shadow Broker either way. That doesn't mean playing the DLC wouldn't matter though. I'd imagine that, had you not played the LotSB,
  • Feron would be dead
  • Liara would still have issues to work out with Shepard
  • Continuing a romance with Liara would be more difficult (but not impossible)

Personally, I think LotSB will be assumed to have happened, regardless of whether or not you played it. The only thing not having it will change is that you can't rekindle your relationship with Liara without it.

Maybe.

I agree, except I think you will be able to rekindle the relationship in ME3 (it wouldn't be fair to people who couldn't play the DLC)...it will just happen kind of quickly in one conversation, instead of being spread out over the 2-3 hour DLC.  Therefore, the benefit of playing the DLC is being able to rekindle the relationship with Liara in a more natural and more interesting/emotional manner.

Bleh. I've run into a rather ironic problem with my planned fanfic: Liara's ME2 romance is too well-written. There's not much for me to change, which leaves me with either rehashing the in-game events or glossing over them, even if it's AU.

The Illium cameo could always use a rewrite!

I think rehashing in-game events and showing them in a different light is okay.  I kind of did this with my ME1 fan fic...I changed up the conversations Liara and Shepard have but I kept the 'spirit' of the originally written romance, so I hardly consider it AU.  I also add in extra scenes to fill in the blanks.  I think you could easily do this with the Liara and Shepard Illium stuff, as there's not too much to go on anyway.

Illium could be redone... I had some ideas for that.

I'm also tempted to keep her as a squadmate in some capacity, but as much as I love having her around, it feels like it was necessary for her to leave to become the Shadow Broker, an element I don't want to sacrifice because Liara is one of only two squadmates who's ever really left Shepard's shadow to make a personal mark on the world (the other being Wrex). And it's quite a large mark...

Though I'm not quite ready to write about the LotSB events, I can see much of the same problem in my future.  The one upside is that the dialogue was written to be generic.  Some lines were meant to be delivered to both friends and romance partners, so there's some leeway there.  You could also go into more detail about your Shepard and Liara's relationship, talking about specific events that were unique to them, and didn't necessarily happen in ME1.

As for events, I haven't figured out what to do there.  I imagine I'd want to touch one SOME of the key points (going to the apartment, Vasir, Vasir's betrayal, etc.) but wouldn't want to simply give a play-by-play of the game.  You could go with drwells' route and create your own set of events.  Personally, I don't think I have the creativity for that.

She may very well become a squad mate again in ME3...that's why I'm holding off writing anything that takes place in ME3 to avoid AU possibilities. I'm terribly anal about that, but I know other writers like exploring AU possibilities.

I do agree with the statement made about 'leaving Shepard's shadow'...that is definitely cool.

It's funny that you guys mention leaving Shepard's shadow, 'cause the Shadow Broker's dossier on Garrus points out that he'll probably never fully "blossom" while under Shepard.  That's one of the reasons that I always choose him for the Fire Team leader in the Suicide Mission.

Makes you wonder whether Shepard realizes that or not...

I'll admit, while I got that Liara wanted to save Feron, I didn't fully grasp why she was so driven to do so.  The compound guilt and grief is something that I can definitely see causing her to become so hell-bent on her task.

Indeed, and this is something that certain Liara fans have struggled to grasp or understand in the past. Prior to LotSB's release, I've always maintained that Liara's character development merely required sufficient clarification and elaboration, and that she was not acting OOC at all. I think LotSB vindicates this belief, and succeeds where both Redemption and ME2, to a certain extent, failed.

Agreed. Aside from the scene's breathtaking and brilliant cinematography, the player is given the impression that Liara is undertaking a huge responsibility, and that she's selflessly taking over as the new Shadow Broker for the greater good of the galaxy. There's such an incredible amount of emotional weight placed on the scene, and it's impossible to deny that Liara's decision to step into the role is one of the Mass Effect trilogy's key events. It's an amazing scene, and I can't help but feel proud of Liara as she confidently and assertively addresses her new agents and operatives for the first time.

It's not an easy decision, but Liara is more than capable of accepting such a responsibility.

Agreed! However, I'm still hopeful that Liara may grace ME3's cover, and think that it is way overdue. It would be wrong to expect it, though.

Here's an interesting thought.

I think we've all accepted and realised that Matriarch Benezia would be proud of Liara's new occupation as the Shadow Broker, and her vows to use her newfound power and influence to help the galaxy and its inhabitants. However, do you also believe that Benezia would experience an urge to assist her daughter to the best of her ability, and provide guidance and direction on how to successfully lead such a powerful and influential organisation? Or, as I believe, would Benezia respect Liara's independence, and trust her to operate the Shadow Broker network smoothly and effectively?

I think that, in general, Benezia would allow Liara to operate and manage the Shadow Broker network independently. However, I do think that she would feel compelled and obliged to dispense useful and relevant advice when necessary, and occasionally assist Liara when she believes it to be appropriate.

I think she provide some help or advice (if Liara desired), but ultimativly let Liara handle it herself.

THIS.  It would bring in too many variables to do it otherwise.  I'm sure there will be some extra dialogue for the newcommers.

Shepard: Liara, you're the new Shadow Broker now? How?
Liara: Yes, you helped me rescue Feron and kill the old Shadow Broker.  I couldn't just pass on this opportunity.
Shepard: I ... helped?  When was that? Why don’t I remember?
Liara: After you and your team defeated the Collectors, you went to the Dark Star on the Citadel to celebrate.  You and Jacob have been passed out on the bathroom floor for over three years.
Shepard: Oh. That explains a lot.
Liara: It certainly does.
