Here's an interesting thought.

I think we've all accepted and realised that Matriarch Benezia would be proud of Liara's new occupation as the Shadow Broker, and her vows to use her newfound power and influence to help the galaxy and its inhabitants. However, do you also believe that Benezia would experience an urge to assist her daughter to the best of her ability, and provide guidance and direction on how to successfully lead such a powerful and influential organisation? Or, as I believe, would Benezia respect Liara's independence, and trust her to operate the Shadow Broker network smoothly and effectively?

I think that, in general, Benezia would allow Liara to operate and manage the Shadow Broker network independently. However, I do think that she would feel compelled and obliged to dispense useful and relevant advice when necessary, and occasionally assist Liara when she believes it to be appropriate.

Benezia strikes me as the type of mother who would let her children "make their own mistakes," so to speak, and I doubt that she'd try to influence Liara in any way.  I'm sure she'd want to, and would definitely make herself available, but I believe that she respects her daughter too much to try and assist unless asked.

I think both - Benezia would experience the urge to help, but at the same time would respect Liara's abilities and allow her to run it independently for the most part. She was obviously aware of Liara's independent nature and desire to go her own way. She stated that Liara had always made her proud, suggesting she was well aware of what Liara was capable of accomplishing. However, as far as Liara is concerned, she's not so stubborn or proud that she would turn away help or advice if it could help her accomplish her goal of helping to stop the Reapers (and improve galactic civilisation).

What is everyones hopes for Liara in ME3?

Personally I would like to see her return as a full squad member. Aside from that I would really like to see scenes of Shepard and Liara really connecting like during LoTSB. Just things like when visiting a planet/city, have them taking the time to stop and look out over a vista and talk. Not like in ME2 where you could look at a part of a map and when selected a squadmate briefly talks, but actual interactive cutscenes.

The other thing i'd really like is featured in my sig lol.

Agreed. I believe that the expectation that Liara would follow in Benezia's footsteps is somewhat relevant here. During her youth, Liara would have been taught effective leadership techniques, considering the fact that she was expected to become a leader amongst the asari. Taking full responsibility for one's own mistakes is a requirement of leadership, and I think that Benezia would have instructed Liara to do so. She would have wanted Liara to develop leadership skills at a relatively young age.

As a result, I think that Benezia would trust and respect Liara enough to be able to operate the Shadow Broker network effectively.

I'm not sure how she'd return as a full squadmate while working as the Shadow Broker.

"Allow" is an interesting word choice. It implies Benezia has the means to force Liara into compliance with her wishes. Given that Liara chose to estrange herself from her mother when she decided to pursue a career in archaeology I doubt Benezia has any psychological hold on her daughter. As to physical force (Benezia's asari commandos) I think Shepard would provide a good deterrent. If there is any "allowing" of Benezia to influence Liara in I think that would come strictly from Liara. Benezia might desire to help her daughter, but she would have to accept Liara is an independent adult, free to make her own choices in all parts of her life. Benezia could offer help and guidance. It would be up to Liara to accept.

This, plus the chance to influence her towards Paragon/Renegade a la Garrus in 1. Paragon moves her back towards the lovable "bookish sort" of archaeologist from 1, Renegade...well, we've seen what Liara can do with a Singularity. Posted Image

Absolutely, and now you've got me hungering for a look at Benezia's and Liara's relationship 50-60 years in the past.

Yeah, poor choice of words on my part. What I mean is that Benezia would allow Liara to operate independently of her, without attempting to assist or advise her at all. When I state that Benezia may disallow Liara to act in a certain way, I don't mean that she would impose any form of psychological influence on her daughter. Rather, I think she would attempt to advise and guide Liara, and offer her assistance.

Benezia doesn't wield any form of psychological influence or hold over Liara. Not a chance.

Yeah, so I think Benezia would try to 'butt in' like all parents would, but ultimately would leave Liara alone after receiving a few nasty looks :P

Exactly!

I'm now imagining Benezia as a meddlesome old woman who thinks that she knows what's best for her daughter, and constantly "advises" her accordingly.

@TheMarshal

I have been planning to write a fic centred around a youthful Liara, and Matriarch Benezia. I'm a horrible procrastinator, though. Bleh.

I'd crap my pants if that facial expression was directed in my general area :D
especially if Lady Benezia did it.

I made an ME3 Shepard/Liara cover that I'm planning on using instead of whatever BioWare will throw at us :)

dA link

I would like to see Liara on the cover of the vanilla ME3 box but I kind of doubt it's going to happen as they will show off new squad mates. Regardless, I like this one better as it has my Shepard on it XD

That looks great jlb. Now everyone will ask you for custom box covers with their Shepards :)

Have you seen this one? The artist got Shepard's gender wrong  but did a nice job with Liara.

That's a GREAT screen shot!  I imagine that's the look I get on my face when I want to punch someone through the internet.

If Shepard is imprisoned by the Alliance at the beginning of ME3, who'll vote for her saying "Have you ever faced an asari commando unit before...? Few humans have," to her guards before Liara's team breaks in to rescue her?

That'd be a fun line to see delivered.  I imagine that Liara wouldn't try anything so straight-forward, though.  In my headcanon, though, Shepard lets herself get "captured" before her own team comes in and breaks her out so she can go undercover in the Citadel.

I hope that at some point Liara can join my team full time. I also hope they keep the more balanced Liara from
LOTSB, I really liked her paragade-ness. Mostly I hope the dialog between them has the same "banter" feel that
the DLC had.

... and of course a wedding

Bleh. I've run into a rather ironic problem with my planned fanfic: Liara's ME2 romance is too well-written. There's not much for me to change, which leaves me with either rehashing the in-game events or glossing over them, even if it's AU.

Though I'm not quite ready to write about the LotSB events, I can see much of the same problem in my future.  The one upside is that the dialogue was written to be generic.  Some lines were meant to be delivered to both friends and romance partners, so there's some leeway there.  You could also go into more detail about your Shepard and Liara's relationship, talking about specific events that were unique to them, and didn't necessarily happen in ME1.

As for events, I haven't figured out what to do there.  I imagine I'd want to touch one SOME of the key points (going to the apartment, Vasir, Vasir's betrayal, etc.) but wouldn't want to simply give a play-by-play of the game.  You could go with drwells' route and create your own set of events.  Personally, I don't think I have the creativity for that.

I was about to suggest driving right through the guard rails and heading off into AU land. As just one example, Liara could decide that she's so broken by losing Shepard and then Feron that, rather than be consumed in a quest for vengeance, she tries to go back to a more peaceful life, such as teaching Prothean archaeology at the University of Serrice. Shepard looks her up and convinces her that she's meant to do more than that, and that she should rejoin Shepard's crew. Now you get all kinds of interesting new situations: Liara on Horizon, or on the Collector ship when Shepard learns the Collectors are Protheans, or talking to Mordin, etc.

The benefit of this is, it's the same character, but you get to ask "how would she react to X happening?" Everybody has asked a question like that about their favorite characters at some point. And I'll bet they've all answered it, too. Look at how many people ask "What if you could heal Tela Vasir instead of letting her bleed out?" It doesn't even have to be a big change. A lot of the fun is looking at how a very small decision, made differently, can lead to huge unintended consequences.

If you don't like going AU, another route is to do what Interstitium does and look at all the things that are in-universe but that the game never has time for. How do Shepard's friends react to his/her death? What's it like working with Miranda on the Lazarus project? (Not fun.) How do Grunt and Garrus get along? (Poorly.) What about Zaeed and Kasumi? (Quite well in an 'odd couple' kind of way: they burglarize Nyxeris' house together, bickering hilariously the whole time.) How does Jacob react to Miranda getting shot up by a Praetorian on Horizon? (It's heartbreaking.)

BTW, I didn't think I had the creativity to do this either. I made it up to a first draft of Liara's first meeting with Feron (I had Chakwas with her instead of Garrus), said "this doesn't work, and this is NOT my area of expertise - I should stick to more fluffy material", and nearly just ended the story there.
