THIS.  It would bring in too many variables to do it otherwise.  I'm sure there will be some extra dialogue for the newcommers.

Shepard: Liara, you're the new Shadow Broker now? How?
Liara: Yes, you helped me rescue Feron and kill the old Shadow Broker.  I couldn't just pass on this opportunity.
Shepard: I ... helped?  When was that? Why don’t I remember?
Liara: After you and your team defeated the Collectors, you went to the Dark Star on the Citadel to celebrate.  You and Jacob have been passed out on the bathroom floor for over three years.
Shepard: Oh. That explains a lot.
Liara: It certainly does.

Though I'm not quite ready to write about the LotSB events, I can see much of the same problem in my future.  The one upside is that the dialogue was written to be generic.  Some lines were meant to be delivered to both friends and romance partners, so there's some leeway there.  You could also go into more detail about your Shepard and Liara's relationship, talking about specific events that were unique to them, and didn't necessarily happen in ME1.

As for events, I haven't figured out what to do there.  I imagine I'd want to touch one SOME of the key points (going to the apartment, Vasir, Vasir's betrayal, etc.) but wouldn't want to simply give a play-by-play of the game.  You could go with drwells' route and create your own set of events.  Personally, I don't think I have the creativity for that.

I was about to suggest driving right through the guard rails and heading off into AU land. As just one example, Liara could decide that she's so broken by losing Shepard and then Feron that, rather than be consumed in a quest for vengeance, she tries to go back to a more peaceful life, such as teaching Prothean archaeology at the University of Serrice. Shepard looks her up and convinces her that she's meant to do more than that, and that she should rejoin Shepard's crew. Now you get all kinds of interesting new situations: Liara on Horizon, or on the Collector ship when Shepard learns the Collectors are Protheans, or talking to Mordin, etc.

The benefit of this is, it's the same character, but you get to ask "how would she react to X happening?" Everybody has asked a question like that about their favorite characters at some point. And I'll bet they've all answered it, too. Look at how many people ask "What if you could heal Tela Vasir instead of letting her bleed out?" It doesn't even have to be a big change. A lot of the fun is looking at how a very small decision, made differently, can lead to huge unintended consequences.

If you don't like going AU, another route is to do what Interstitium does and look at all the things that are in-universe but that the game never has time for. How do Shepard's friends react to his/her death? What's it like working with Miranda on the Lazarus project? (Not fun.) How do Grunt and Garrus get along? (Poorly.) What about Zaeed and Kasumi? (Quite well in an 'odd couple' kind of way: they burglarize Nyxeris' house together, bickering hilariously the whole time.) How does Jacob react to Miranda getting shot up by a Praetorian on Horizon? (It's heartbreaking.)

BTW, I didn't think I had the creativity to do this either. I made it up to a first draft of Liara's first meeting with Feron (I had Chakwas with her instead of Garrus), said "this doesn't work, and this is NOT my area of expertise - I should stick to more fluffy material", and nearly just ended the story there.

I'll have to take a look at Interstitium.  I like the idea of looking at events through the eyes of others.  The thing is, I like the events of LotSB, and Liara becoming an information broker works into another story that I have involving her and an OC that I'm working on.  I really want to tell those events through the eyes of Alice and possibly Liara, since that's kind of the reason I wanted to start writing in the first place.  I think that once I sit down and actually start planning things out, the story will come together.

For the time being, I really gotta finish A Good Night...

Yes, A Good Night must come to an end and result in the sequel, A Bad Hangover. XD

I've been writing tonight, but my eyes have gone all buggy and I must stop before Liara warps into Saren and attacks Wrex.

Haha! I've finally got something written on my own story!

Granted, it's a piece of only mildly altered dialogue from the game, but it signals the beginning of a plot that I've now actually decided on.

That'd be a fun line to see delivered.  I imagine that Liara wouldn't try anything so straight-forward, though.  In my headcanon, though, Shepard lets herself get "captured" before her own team comes in and breaks her out so she can go undercover in the Citadel.

That's your headcanon for ME3?

Not necessarily ME3, since it's a little too specific to my Shepard.  It would be something that happens in the interim between 2 and 3.  She tries to get the ball rolling with the council by showing them various things she's come across that prove the reapers are not only real, but they've been threatening the galaxy for hundreds of years (not to mention the Protheans, and civilizations before that).

I'll make you a deal: if I can get Ch.3 of A Good Night posted by Friday, you start your story!

You, my friend, have a deal!

This is a fortunate coincidence, as I've had a few ideas running through my mind for this story. It would be set six decades prior to the events of ME1, and would obviously star a young Liara, who returns home to visit her mother during a break from the University of Serrice. The relationship between Liara and Benezia would obviously be the focal point of the story, with Shiala also playing a prominent role. I'm also considering some form of reference to Wrex, or a possible cameo appearance without him meeting any of the story's main characters.

Even if you are unable to post the next chapter of A Good Night by Friday, I may start this story regardless. :D

Sounds interesting, just one thing.

Now having Shiala be in the story makes sense, but Wrex? How do you plan on including him, even if it's just a small reference? Unless Liara just bumps into him accidently in a wal-mart or something.

Oh, Wrex and Liara wouldn't actually meet each other, and he would appear in a scene that's independent from anything involving Liara, Benezia or Shiala. I need to devise a way to make this believable, though.

One idea is to have Liara attacked by kidnappers, who wish to exploit Benezia for ransom money. Liara would successfully defend herself, but a few members of the gang would escape. Later, we'd hear about how a successful asari businesswoman has hired a krogan bounty hunter to deal with the problem, with the heavy implication that said krogan is Wrex. I'm still trying to decide.

Hah!

The fact that Liara and Shiala do not acknowledge each other in ME1 is a terrible oversight, though. Dialogue and interaction between the two would have been quite interesting.

Ah. But shouldn't it be Benezia and not some other asari buisness woman who hires Wrex to deal with it? Unless the asari in question is affiliated with Liara somehow.

But if the idea doesn't work out, you can always just use mine and have them meet in a wal-mart! ^_^

This asari businesswoman would have also been a victim of this criminal gang at some point, and would want the problem dealt with ASAP.

The temptation is to have Nassana Dantius fill that role, but I think the Mass Effect universe would feel a little too small is every single NPC was connected in some way.

Good luck with the fanfic then.

Maybe Alestia Iallis? She knows (works for) Benezia in ME1.

I thought they did acknowledge each other somewhat?  Or maybe I'm just thinking jlb's fic is now canon...

Thanks for the best wishes, guys. I appreciate it.

I really do not understand why BioWare neglected to include any form of acknowledgment or unique dialogue between Liara and Shiala, though. After all, Ashley and Samesh Bhatia will speak to each other about Nirali. I don't think it would have been that difficult, to be honest.

Probably b/c Liara might not have been recruited by then?

Though, with Samesh, Ashley might not even be in your squad so...it makes no sense.

There is unique dialogue all over the place, so it's odd that having Liara in your party on Feros doesn't trigger any with Shiala. Although maybe it would have been too much to get into at that point, and BW opted to just avoid it rather than having to go deep. How does Liara handle a Shepard who kills Shiala, anyway?

Shepard: *BLAM!*

Liara: Oh by the way, she was one of my mother's most trusted assistants, and may have been able to tell us where Benezia was going.

Shepard: Oh...

Disgust I could imagine. Killing Shiala just have to be one of the most meaningless renegade actions Shepard can take. Doing it pretty much reduces Shepard to nothing more than a petty thug.

Keep in mind that Shiala, a known agent of the enemy, had just convinced Shepard to do the asari mind melt, giving her access to all of Shepard's knowledge, plans, secret codes...
