Finishing off the 4th chapter of Who We Are, and I realized something which I tried to touch on a bit.

Liara drops EVERYTHING to join the Normandy. While she had good reason to... it wasn't like Garrus or Wrex where they made a conscious decision to quit. Liara was put on the Normandy and just sort of... stayed. Did she resign from her academic career? Did she have a house she lived in? Obligations to whoever sponsored her archeological dig on Therum?

I'm not arguing against it, but I found it odd how it was never discussed by Shepard or the others. At least in my opinion.

Well, as far as I remember too, Saren was after her. Either for her life and/or for her extensive knowledge of the Protheans.

And I also like to think, she sticks around with Shepard to get to see her mother and see for herself if she's "gone to the dark side" even with the knowledge that they'll have to face the inevitable when it comes to Matriarch Benezia. Somehow, I don't fully believe that she resents her mother that much (well apart from the issues arising from being bred by a very influential figure as the matriarch). As has been said, I'm sure*, it is at least implied she knows her mother well enough to know that she will never consciously work with Saren (or anyone/anything for that matter) in a bid to destroy the galaxy (or organic life). But then again, I always jump at the chance of recruiting her first rather than doing the other major missions. lol That's how it is situated in my head, at least.

Hmm. They've left a huge hole with that one with regards to Shepard and Liara's conversations, I agree. I at least would have liked for Shepard to ask more about Liara's past (even more so with her rather strained relationship with her mother) rather than the misconceptions of asari culture. They've done great with Liara's character that I almost feel I'm asking too much. lol

*I'm still trying to read through the rest of the 160 odd pages of this thread. lol. I do apologise for any ideas that I might have reiterated for not reading all of the replies. ^_^

Hehe. I like the way you think TheMarshal. ;) But it does make sense though since she does say how she is fascinated with Shepard... with how she is "marked by the beacon"... and "touched by Prothean technology." The romance just happens to be the icing on a very sweet cake. lol

We never learn how she ended up on Therum in the first place. Perhaps she was just hitching along some other scientist or was on an expedition, or something completely diffrent.

Also good to see you posting again. Was almost afraid you had given up on "Who we are".

Of course, we aren't going to get any proof of Liara not approaching the rest of the crew, due to squadmates not interacting aboard the Normandies, as a function of Mass Effect game mechanics. However, I think that were this, perhaps, a TV show (where the squadmates were capable of observable interaction), then we would see Liara remaining quiet until Shepard starts to build a relationship with Liara.

Yes, I agree.

Now that I think about Liara's behavior post-Therum in the crew debriefing, she is quite comfortable and confident in front of Shepard and crew (who are a bunch of stranger at the time) as she basically lectures them about the Protheans.

That's the only in-game example of early Liara/crew interaction that I can think of.

Indeed, and this is why I disagree with the notion that Liara is a person who is naturally reclusive. As I mentioned in a previous post, Liara's ME1 dialogue implies that, on occasion, she wished to escape the pressure that was heaped upon her when she was younger, and the expectation that she would follow in Matriarch Benezia's footsteps. Considering the fact that she aspired to become an archaeologist, I don't think the constant interference in her life would have been particularly pleasant or desirable. Whilst Liara is obviously more than capable of rebuffing any attempt to force her to act in a specific way, I can imagine that this situation would eventually become quite tiresome.

Consequently, I think that Liara would be more than happy to befriend her new crewmates on the Normandy, as they are not the same people who constantly pressurised her in her youth.

I won't get it because it will go to one of our senior computer engi's, but I had to try :P

Kinda curious that nobody ever thought to ask her about it (at least in game), but I imagine that the prospect of galaxy-ending super-machines, the same ones that destroyed the Protheans 50,000 years ago, coming back and...  well...  destroying all civilization again kinda makes digging through ancient ruins seem quaint.

Plus, she's asari.  What's 6+ months on a ship compared to the rest of her life?

(I personally think that she stayed on 'cause of Shepard, but that's just me! )

I would stay on for "Ali-Cat!"

Well who wouldn't?  >.>

I love the character, but she's honestly like the woman that I want my (hypothetical) daughter to grow up to become.

Might be just as well actually. I used to work at a dev company and we got a contract with Wizards of the Coast to develop a Magic the Gathering game. There was a guy at the office who LOVED that game, so they made him the lead dev. By the time the project was done, he never wanted to see that damn game again

Apologies all around, but the next chapter of Duet won't be out until later tomorrow, due to writer's block. In addition, I'd like to blame my cat, for keeping me awake all night with incessant yowling. Here is his guilty face:

Alright. Whoever's playing the creepy ME1 music needs to quit.

It's 2:50 a.m. and I just about shizzed my pants when it started playing.

Also.

@drwells123

Yaaaaaaaaaay! [goosh!] I'm so excited. I can definitely wait until tomorrow.

I don't think "Liara's World" qualifies as "creepy" (cf Prometheus soundtrack)

Though, I'd still kill him anyway, tbh.

I'd just kill TIM. Just for being TIM.
And if Liara can move closer to my Shepard, even better....

EDIT: wtf ? Am I hearing music in this page ?

Has there been a discussion about what Liara's reaction to finding out who her "father" is? That's of coarse if she didn't put it together already. Also would she want to?

Liara's world isn't really that good music to listen to on it's own. Much better when it plays during the game, it helps setting the mood.

I think Liara would have been quite shocked and surprised to learn that Matriarch Aethyta is her father, especially when considering the fact that it is likely that Liara visited Eternity whenever she was off work. Liara may have become quite well-acquainted with Aethyta, and to suddenly learn that the person you have been in close contact with for several years is also your estranged other parent would be shocking.

Would Liara seek to reunite with Aethyta? I believe so. I also theorise that Aethyta will start investigating Liara's mysterious disappearance, and may even confront Shepard over the whereabouts of her daughter.

I would kill him just for myself. If Liara could move SB opperations to the Lair, all the better!

Don't feed the troll.

In other news... do you see Liara having any sympathy for the Illusive man? It's kind of a paradox, on one hand:

- She was always the voice of reason, sparing the rachni, seeing good (or at least the remnants of good) in Saren.

- She knows how easy it is to go down that road. Where the ends justify the means and you're consumed by that which you are trying to destroy.

But as the Shadow Broker she knows what he is up to, the things he's done, what he represents as a threat to galactic stability. Could she in good conscious let this continue?
