A Blasto t-shirt?! I love it, scamper! :o

I can just imagine Liara's giggle if she were to ever see Shepard wearing it. XD

Thanks, Les. I always imagine it's Liara who gives Jih these t-shirts.

Yes, exactly! The fact that the pair of them feel comfortable in confiding in each other says a great deal about their relationship, romantic or otherwise. Shepard rarely lowers her emotional barriers, and for her to do so in Liara's presence is testament to how much she trusts and appreciates her psychological support, and values their relationship. Liara is one of few individuals who genuinely care about Shepard in a deeply interpersonal manner, and it shows.

Definitely. Shepard has to be the strong confident leader for almost all the other people in her life, and for Liara to be the person she can let that persona drop for shows a very close personal bond, even if it's not romantic.

Oh, I think that you should definitely, at the very least, attempt to write some Liara fanfiction! I think your interpretations of her character and actions have been extremely interesting, and that it would be great if you were ever able to transmit your ideas to some form of creative writing.

But yeah, I agree with you. Especially when considering the fact that it is probable that, prior to the confrontation with Benezia, Liara would have been comforting Shepard following the casualties suffered on Virmire. Again, it showcases the existence of deep and genuine interpersonal trust in their relationship. It's beautiful!

I think I may try one day, maybe ease myself in with a oneshot and see how it goes. In all honesty I just really don't have much free time at the moment (i'm currently getting my ars* handed to me by Biology homework) and my presence here is just part of my high affinity for procrastination :P

Yes the comforting after Virmire would indeed be a good lead in to the Benezia situation (how did I forget a series of events in one my my favourite games ever? Oh well it's past midnight here). That again is another example of Shepard taking down the wall, as it were, and letting only Liara see the real her. These moments are why Liara is my favourite character, and why all (except one) of the fanfics I follow involve a Liara romance.

Fantastic work scampermax, and thank you! My FemShep will be wearing this during Arrival.
Haven't been over to the FemShep thread yet but I bet they're all trying it on over there too :)

I wait all week for updates to this story, I really love it but I need to learn to read more slowly. Great work.

My humble thanks Blansten, that's fantastic to hear. I hope to get this week's chapter more on schedule :)

I have the same problem, I try to space out reading Who We Are/Duty Calls/Good Night so I can get through the dry spells, but curiosity usually gets the better of me. It's like that pint of gelato that you're just supposed to snack on, but gets destroyed in one sitting

I hear ya.  Or that box of wheat thins and that container of cream cheese that started out full when the night began...  *drools*

I hope that my next fic will be a little more regular in updating.  I need to be better in coming up with outlines ahead of time, so that I'm not stuck figuring out what's going to happen as I'm writing it.  I chalk it up to n00bishness when it comes to writing.  I remember having A Good Night written up to the equivalent of midway through Chapter 2 and thinking that the whole story was 80% of the way finished.  Silly me...

I'm sure who/whatever is Arriving will be suitably impressed. If it's Blasto your FemShep can get him to sign her shirt.

There's a part of me that would love the arrival to be that of Blasto, my femShep would follow him around asking him for pics and an autograph a la Conrad Verner.

I've never thought of Liara as the sort to stage an intervention, but, in this case I think she might make an exception.

@Scamper I think you're probably right :P what can I say? Without Liara around Shepard had a lot of free time to spend watching movies, you know, when she wasn't saving the galaxy and all that.

I tell myself that if I'm writing, I'm justified in eating all the crackers to help fuel the creative process

Stephen King actually argues against plotting and is in favor of figuring out what's going to happen as you're writing it. As he puts it, if you don't know what's going to happen next, how can the reader?

Right now I see the best approach as a balancing act - sketch the broad outlines, but make up everything inside them as you go. I know how Duet is going to end, but not how I'm going to get there

Thanks for all the wonderful fanfic everyone. I'm enjoying the heck out of 'em. I'm excited for jlb's next chapter!

@TheMarshal: I came across your story fragment about Alice reacting to the Liara hacking job. Wow, I was blown away. Could you please continue that?

@Scamper: Another nice design! Thanks!

Glad you liked it!  I do want to expand on that, but I'm not quite sure how I want to use that particular scene.

Indeed! As I mentioned above, the fact that both Shepard and Liara feel comfortable in confiding in each other is an aspect of the romance that I absolutely adore, and is testament to the depth of the genuine love and empathy that exists in their relationship. It is an admirable dynamic to possess in any romance, and it exists in abundance within the Shepard/Liara love story.

Furthermore, considering Liara's new position as the Shadow Broker, does anybody else recognise and like the fact that the pair of them are now dependent on each other in order to emerge victorious from the forthcoming Reaper war? Shepard is relying upon Liara's information network and intelligence, and Liara requires Shepard's military experience and combat prowess, in addition to her ability to lead and inspire and army. Again, this serves to strengthen their relationship, and showcases the mutual trusts that exists in their partnership.

Very true.  As much as I'd like to think that Shepard could just throw off the shackles of Cerberus and still be a force to be reckoned with on her own, she needs an information network to get the job done.  In ME1 it was Alliance/Council.  ME2 was Cerberus (arguably one of the premier information networks in the galaxy).  In ME3 it will (damn well better...) be Liara as the Shadow Broker.

I don't think the importance of her role was fully apparent to me until I saw a clip of a Shepard who didn't romance Liara finish up LotSB and chose "It's just nerves" instead of hugging her (strange, I know...).  She immediately 'sucks it up' and gets down to business.  Whereas whenever I do that scene, my Shepard is always just relieved that Liara still loves her, and doesn't get the importance of the act until later on (which is exactly how I'll write it when/if I get there).

I know what you mean. I'd like to see for myself how Lotsb plays out with a character that's not in romance with Liara. (And without just consulting youtube this time) but... that'd mean doing an ENTIRE playthrough without romancing Liara... which is just awful.

I'm sure you can find the clips for the dialogue options on youtube, if your search-fu is strong.

If you have a save just before defeating the ShadowBroker, you can select the "just nerve" option after the battle, it revert the romance to friendship (and make Shep look like a jerk for one line). I did that last night. There is not that many changes between romance and friends on Ilium from what I remember from an earlier Shepard (expect maybe that there is no jealous spat if you romance another crewmate...I played it with a no romance Shep).

Really? I thought you could continue the romance with Liara as long as Shepard showed concern or care once (picked a paragon) to Liara before you get to the conversation where you invite her up to drinks.

I am working on a garrusmance playthough (rejected Liara in ME1), so I will get some information about how her non-romance path plays out. So far, in ME1, there is only minor changes.

I think that Liara as the major information source is going to be a given.

BioWare chose to make the first major story DLC about Liara becoming the new Shadow Broker. Clearly, Shepard is going to need some kind of an organization behind her in ME3. Since ME2 gave Shepard the option to blow the Collector base (and therefore, majorly ****** off Cerberus), BioWare needs to replace Cerberus for ME3. Even a Paragon Shepard is not going to be on the best terms with the council (because of the forced Cerberus involvement), and the Council military forces have been weakened after the war with Saren.

Ok, I just watched a youtube playthrough with the "just nerve" were you got the "I want to talk about us", which I didn't have, unless you lose it if you select investigate...hmm. Maybe its on a counter too, I did select the "I'm worried about you" over the " About us" option on Illium too.

I will retry that part just to see if I'm not totally rambling.

Edit: Gah! I deleted my save just before the SB! at least I still got one right before doing the DLC...

You mean to tell me that saying one line can screw up the whole relationship between liara and shep? huh, also i would like to know what whould happen if you said goodbye to liara instead of "i want to talk about us" option on the shadow broker ship? just curious.

I believe that the romance only ends (assuming you don't have an ME2 LI) in the cabin scene when you choose "Death, most likely" followed by the Renegade option. And if you do that, you damn well SHOULD lose the romance, you heartless, mopey bastard! : P
